HI Karthik,
I thought u would respond to my posting on the MSV - RDB song similarity.
Anyway, I need a clarification from u . I have visited the iespana site of urs - pretty good one, I should say. Under the heading - coincidences, there is a mention that Yanni's Quiet man and ARR's Puthu Vellao Mazhai are similar (the opening and some interludes) but ARR's PVM came 5 yrs before QM. My opinion, is don't u think Yanni would have got inspired by PVM? It need not be that always Indians r the ones who get inspired.
Also, if u could pls. enlighten further on the Vaazha Ninaithaal Vaazhalam and Tumse Achcha Kaun hai coincidence / similarity / inspiration......
It's all IMHO

The theme music from Baba, also called as 'Ekamevadhvitheeyam' opens almost exactly like the prominent score from the cult classic 'The Untouchables' with music by Ennio Morricone! Why Rahman chose to lift this so blatantly really beats me, even if figures in Baba for a few fleeting seconds! But this is one lift I just cannot brush off as a coincidence! In the soundtrack of The Untouchables, this tune plays almost throughout the movie, more so for the softer/sadder moments! I've added the track called 'Al Capone' from The Untouchables which probably brings out the copy best, in my opinion!
Check out my site for audio clips of both and compare!

I agree. Straight lift from 'Untouchables'.

What about Pachchai Niramey in Alaipayuthey. Complete copy of a Western by Ennio Morricone - that nobody noticed eh?

Karthik S,
This is posted by MPR in some other thread about 'Kaathal Samrajyam' (Yuvan Shankar Raja's latest Album)
>>> 'Salsa' is inspired from a track in Santana's 'Supernatural'.
Can you pls. verify this ?

I dont think there's any direct lift. Yuvan merely seems to have attempted Santana's kind of music...though I need to hear Supernatural all over again to check any direct lift. I'm saying this from what I've heard in the past!

athu sari, looks like after 'thanga pathakkaththin maelee' and 'kallellaam maaNikkak kallaagumaa', ARR got some inspiration from 'kaalaiyum neeyee, maalaiyum neeyee' from thenilavum ... noticed that in Baba 'Sakthi kodu' song ?

Yes Pradeep...its possible that Yanni might be inspried by ARR. Its also possible that both ARR and Yanni might have been inspired by a common thrid source. Till I find that conclusively, I thought the coincidence page would be the best place.
And vaazha ninaithaal and tumse acha kaun hai do sound similar....very interesting!

Karthik S:
Surprised by your logic. If Yaani's flick needs further proof to be branded as a copy as you suspect a third source, the same can be applied to ARR as well isn't it regarding Untouchables..I have not listened to that yet though but, the BGM music is what you are mentioning in baba songs (that one perticular), then it is very feable and comes in background and not much of instrumentation or composition is visible. It seems to be a rather plain. Can you please explain what are you looking into actually.

the ground rule for an indian listening to music is...only an indian can copy from others, it cannot be other way round. sorry we are brain drained to copy only from others. thats what this webside concludes. Is the person having this copy website really technically qualified to just keep on blaming the technically qualified people or is he/she the judge for music who decides which is wrong or write.
I wish our musicians takes him to the court and file a defamation case.
I DONT KNOW WHY WE DONT BELIVE THAT OUR MUSICIANS CAN THINK THE SAME WAY!. Its become a fashion to say song x sounds like song y.
IS MUSIC OWEND ONLY BY WEST? , the same western musicians say "Musical second guessing is mere waste of time." - Billy joel , since you trust them more, take his words atleast.

Are yaar: My logic stems from the fact that Yanni has lifted quite a few pieces in the past and even the famous 'Aria' which British Airways used as Yanni's is lifted off a very famous theme tune which came way before Yanni was born! In fact people like Yanni and Andrew Lloyd Webber have cases of copyright infringement against them in the US!
If we were discussing the same about another musician against whom there are no known charges of lifting, I'd sure conclude that he lifted from ARR. Yanni is different. We just licked Yanni's @#$ when he wanted to perform infront of of one of our most treasured monuments and I'm ashamed of the Indian govt for allowing him to do that. In my eyes, Yanni is very ordinary 'cos I know where he derives inspiration from and to what extent.
I hope this cools AJ too!

Deva engirunthu vanthaar, inga?
Are yaar's original message needed a question mark at this place....to mean the end of a sentence...I assumed he's talking about the Baba-Untouchables instance could have a 3rd source too kind of angle.
"...applied to ARR as well isn't it? Regarding Untouchables..I have not..."
Sorry for the confusion. But my stand on Yanni stays! :-)
And AJ: The reason why we dont naturally jump to a conclusion that someone from the west has lifted from an Indian source is that such instances are extremely rare. There's nothing wrong in thinking twice about such an instance and if the benefit of doubt goes to the artist from the West, I dont think its wrong. We Indians have plagiarised so badly in the past that we're way beyond any redemption. It has become a way of life here...just take any recent Hindi movie/ recent songs for instance...everything you see and hear is inspired.
The west derives inspiration too, but they make sure that the original artist is adequately credited. Giving credit is something we've never learnt.

yes very true, I would rather have a web site if not great atleast - with some "good" things about indian musicians rather than pointing out some so called "illegitimate" songs and going gaga over it.

'Salsa' music reminded me of supernatural when I heard the first time. I don't have that album with me right now to check it. The arrangement is similar (lead guitar and percussion) but I don't think it's a direct lift of any particular track.

another indian. - thappAna logic. If a weed grows and grows so that good plants cannot survive, then that weed must be removed totally. This can be done only by brutally chopping them off, not by trimming them once a week.
I hope that this website and other efforts lead to enforcement of copyright in India too.. after all, musicians work just as hard as anyone else coming up with original music... copying it just isnt fair to them. There is no indian-ness or anything else involved in all this. After all, music has no language or nationality, IMHO.
