Raaja's choice of Mano

I think Raaja did not do justice to some wonderful composings by using Mano. Especially those that Mano sang in calf's voice with the sweet renderings of SJ. Two songs that I feel Mano did well is the Nee Oru Kaadhal from Nayagan and another solo in the film that features "Poove semboove" by KJ. I feel IR has committed sin by getting Mano to sing all the songs in Idayathai Thirudadhe and also in the film directed by JayaChitra starring with Raguman. I think you folks will come up with lot of songs that IR wasted with Mano. As a humble devotee of Raja, I really hate him in this aspect.

  I do not know if this song had been mentioned already. Mano had done justice to "Adho mega oorvalam". It is really beautiful. (Probably SPB would have dont it better.) we can find a marked difference between the telegu 'Geetanjali' and Idhayaththai thirudaathey. I prefer telegu to tamil just for SPB.

  One of the problems with Mano's singing is lack of correct emotion...many love duets were rendered as devotional songs (kAviyam pAdi vA thendRalE of IT is an example)...Surprising to see Raja using him for so many songs, particularly because the emotional appeal of a typcial Raja song is quite good and one thinks it has something to do with his emphasis on that aspect(then pAndi cheemaiyilE, vaigaraiyil...the list is too long)

  I vaguely remember reading in this very forum that IR had to pull in Mano in place of SPB (esp starting from IT days), because SPB had some medical problem in his throat. SPB was unable to sing for sometime. Otherwise why would IR use SPB for 'Geetanjali' (Tel) which came first, but Mano for IT? I am not buying the so-called 'IR-ego-theory' for anything and everything about IR, IMHO.

  i think mano has a stereo type voice i.e. throughout the sing he does not bring any variations in his expressions,the whole song will be like some programme which does goes in the way it is being told.another point is that the reason for mano's horrifying voice is because of our great music director arr who gave him the song of the millenium 'mukkala mukabla', the song was a hit but after that all the md's approcahed mano to sing the same voice for their movie which was like unbearable.Ir haas also gave us some songs sung by mano and p.susheela in some ramarajan's movies which at time really irrtiates the listeneres

  mano's voice by itself gets on my nerves (IMHO, IMHO, sandaikku varaatheenga:-))] because of the lack of emotion. he doesn't seem to enjoy singing, or at least it doesn't show. even the most erotic number sounds dull and colourless when mano renders it. and when he starts impersonating others (like TMS in hey shabba), one can only pray for succour.

  eden it is the voice of mano which irritates me because raja cannot be blamed for this cos there is something called as a saturation point,in the case of mano there is a saturation point in his voice which cannot be helped.you can see that point in the song 'nee oru kathal sangeetham'from the movie nayakan,i bet that if SPB would have sung that song that song would have been a all time hit.

  Somewhere around year 1987 there was some misunderstading between ir and spb. So ir wanted to bring in somebody in spb's place. the miserable invention was mano. if you listen to "vaa vaa vaa kanna vaa", you will never again listen to mano. People with originality only can have mass behind them. When gold is available in the form of spb will anybody go for rold gold.

  Hi, I am a fan of Mano, do not criticize him just because you like SPB a lot. This attitude really upsets people. Mano can easily imitate SPB but can SPB imitate Mano ,meri baath maano ,NO. Therefore Mano is great, but the problem is , I ama deaf.

  nobody has talked about 'chinnathambi' in which
  IR gave Mano full opportunity -especially the
  number 'thooliyele'.
  
  the problem with Mano is lack of originality and
  shruti control. obviously he fell out of contention over time.
  infact I wish IR uses SPB to get back to his
  days of melody.

  Hi fans of both SPB & MANO, Pl. don't compare or
  compere in singing capabilities of both of them-as
  both rdifferent. In fact,IR found a substitue in
  MANO for SPB only.But a few songs like Chinna rasave ennai sitherumbu kadikkuda..' in Waltair
  Vetrivel is excellent rendering by Mano-not spoiling the basic raga 'LATHANGI'
  To compare MANO with SPB is to be desisted at the
  outset, as SPB is the GREATEST singer of 3 1/2
  decades - & will remain for another decades to go
  but,Mano had spoiled his carreerby singing songs
  like AZHAGIYA LAILA.. 'in a high crescendo voice
  though hit for that period, one can't listen to
  this today! but, he had sung extremly well in following songs composed by IR.
  1.OM NAMAHA..OM NAMAHA.. IN "HAMSANATHAM" raga in
  IDHAYATHAI THIRUDATHEY..
  2.VARAAYO. UNAKKE SARAN NANGALE.."in AATHMA is an
  excellent rendering by MANO in raga KAPI by IR.
  So I request u to avoid comparison in these duos

  I don't understand how IR did injustice in using Mano's voice if the song was great to begin with. However, I do think that of late, Mano has been dealt with a lot of crass songs (e.g., Chicklet Chicklet Chittukuruvi, from Poove Unakkaaga; Adi Anarkali, from Ullathil Allithaa; Palli Paadamaa, from Meera). I can list out a dozen or so songs sung by Mano which I really liked, regardless of the fact that, well, Mano is the singer.
  Have you guys heard:
  
  1. Malayaala Karaiyoram (Rajathi Raja)-- wonderful song, though somewhat reminiscent of Maamavukku Kuduma Kuduma [Punnagai Mannan fame]. Another good song in the same film I heard was 'Enkitte Modhaathe.' I don't remember any other songs from the film though.
  2. Aasai Kiliye (Theertha Karaiyinile)-- irresistable song!
  3. Thuli Thuli Mazhaiyaa (Kannukkoru Vannakkili-- unreleased film)-- rare combination of Mano & PS. Irresistable song
  4. Enthan Vaazhkaiyil (Chinna Kannammaa)--IMO, all songs from this film are very good, even though 3 out of the 4 songs feature Mano, which may turn off some listeners
  5. Siththirai Madhaathu (Paadu Nilaave)--a lot of songs in this album were sung by Mano. I think all were good, barring the song 'Kokkarakko Kokkarakko.'
  6. Folkunna Folkuthaan (Idhu Namma Boomi)-- in spite of the corny title, I'd rate this song a gem any day.
  7. Vaaraayo Unakke Saran (Athma)-- classical song sung by Mano. Both interludes in this song are the same. However, I feel that the ending of the song was kind of odd, sort of like KJ Yesudas in 'Erikkarai Poongaatre' (thooral Ninnu Pochchu fame). The other song Mano sang in this film was 'Vidiyum Pozhuthu,' an okay number.
  8. Vanna Chindhu (Koyil Kaalai)-- lovely song
  9. Chinna Raasaave (Walter Vetrivel)
  
  THese are some of the Mano songs by IR that I quite enjoyed. Listen to them if you haven't already.

  The point I was making in my last posting was it doesn't matter who the singer is; if the orchestration, melody, and lyrics are all good, and the singer can follow along with the melody, then the song is good. It's just the way I see it.
  I know there are some of you fellows that are more singer-conscious. You guys may not appreciate [good] songs sung by a particular singer simply because of the singer. There is nothing wrong in that. To each his own, you know.
