If I am not mistaken kAdhal panpAdu song's tune from EVK (song 161 from Rex's site) has been reused by IR in another song.
Can somebody confirm this ?
(even the lyrics sound familiar ?? - pAdagan ingE mAlaigal enGE )

All other songs from EVK (3 more) to be uploaded this weekend. Do not fail to check on this at my site.

hey,
Even the 'en gAnam' songs sounds familiar. Sounds like 'poongkAttru thirumbuma' from mudhal mariyAdhai.
I have a feeling that IR recycled most of the tunes from this movie. Maybe the orchestration might be different. In EVK, he seems to have let loose his imagination with the guitar. Very good.
Thanks Rex for the songs.

Kiru,
The similarity you have highlighted ends in the word "poongaatru" itself, IMO.I don't think IR had recycled the tune.

"One good point abt ARR is that he produces less number of good tunes and hence I am not really in a fix on what to buy and what not to, unlike IR. :-). IR's hits give you more than 50 cassettes + CDs.. "

Hello Raj,
I did not intend to pull somebody into "vambu". It was just a casual lightly meant remark on ARR. Did I say, ARR was bad ? No. I said he is just not as prolific as IR. (hmm..ARR"i" vambukku izukkiradhaip paththi yaar pEsarAnga pArungappa..:-)
I wish we drop this dead here. If continued it may generate heated arguements from the others :-)

Dear Raj & Co!
Thanks for writing much about MVU on and off!
After my experience with KK (exception Alai meedhu), I was a little bit sceptical about this album, finally ventured to a shop on Saturday. Couldn't listen much till yesterday 'cause my son's annual exam (1st std) has just finished and lot of noise at home! Now he's off to Thaththa's house and it's my time to listen MVU like the way I would like to listen!
One word to describe - GRRRREAT!. Man, this chap has still left a lot of creativity with him! I'm refering to three numbers:
1. Ilavenirkala Panjami: This is exactly what I would term as `complex' in my terms, in the sense, there are be many `unexpected' notes to my TFM trained ears!! And that too very good notes!. Though HH sings in a kind of digital way (lot of Vallinam-oru pathththarai matttruththtanga nilavaichchanthithththen...), this is a really lovable, complex (first unadulterated reggae from IR?) number!
2. Manasa killi - started off like a regular dappanguththu - say, ayya voodu of KM. But what a nice twist into WC in inimitable IR way when Swarnalatha starts! With scale changes (IR could have done better by having them sung in parts, like `Malaikkovil vasalil' of Veera) and nice modulation by Slatha, I can't help but humming `Panneer maram, poopooththathu....Pachchaikkili....'
3. Edho, Edho - Great Pallavi, again Reggae! But when the stanza starts, IR's raga vellappravaham- (mmm..in the class of Andhi varum neram). Great singing by Sujatha adds to the flavour!
Other songs are above average; one KR'like number is there by HH & Co; but the second interlude in that song is simply out of the world!!
Looks like I'll again start listening to more of TFM from new movies! Kudos to Raj(a) & co!

But I did comment about MVU in some thread...and eden, I think, meant that I talked about MVU in SOME thread because if you watch his post, he has never mentioned I praised MVU in THIS thread. But the salient point is that I never PRAISED MVU too much(except vaanathil aadum) anywhere!!!

Eden,
I never thought about the reggae influence in MVU. Yup it sounds like it after you mention.
A friend of mine mentioned that IR understands the essence of any type of music and uses this essence to flavor his composition. This applies to his use of Western Classical, Carntic, Classic Rock, Jazz or Reggae.
Here in the forum when analyze his Carnatic style compositions they say it has shades of ..and go on to name 3 or 4 rAgams. Do you think he intentionally mixed these rAgams up together ?? No, I think it is an original composition in the Carnatic style. It is a free form rAgam, I think, He should probably give it a name like 'pudukkavithai'.
I hope people understand what I am trying to say. Maybe some music savvy people can put it in better words.

During the early 80's when Reggae was popular (remember a guy called R Shastri, the champion of champions in WCC, he used to like it a lot; in fact there were many reggae versions of the popular blues no. `Billie Jean'), some of my friends used to tell that IR is not OK in that area. I used to keep quiet. But it was too much when somebody in 90's pointed out something like `ARR has introduced Reggae to India in Chinna Chinna Asai'! (There used to be frequent ads on Zee TV that they also play Reggae, featuring this song) immediately I sprang upon and asked that guy to listen to the 2nd interlude of `Chinna Manikkuilu' of Amman Koil Kizhakkale. He had to admit IR's creativity. It's not that IR cannot do any type of music, either it didn't thrill him or he just used a little bit. But in MVU, Ilavenirkkala Panjami, he let it loose.
BTW, what contrasting albums these KK and MVU are! Another example of the variety that IR can handle with ease. (another point: KK recording is much better than MVU though MVU songs are 10 times better, IMO)

eden,
listen to pEsak kUdAdhu... very good reggaeish punches. that's a great song. mottai had done things before
people could start understanding them (i mean in tfworld), but i don't consider MVU songs as good reggae. they
are typical IR songs with a lots of things going on at the same time.

Arul:
I saw adhutha varisu ( I think in Leo) just for that song - the movie had nothing great to offer, the song just came and went.
I was listening to Ore Naal from Ilamai Oonjaladhu for the n++ time, still sound so fresh and pleasing. Both SBP and VJ have done a great job. This cassette has Kalyanaraman on the other side and Ninaithal Innikum is another unusual creation.
How can this song be classified and are there songs with a beat set to Rupakam Talam in a Kanda nadai( is this a correct identification??)
I am trying to get hold of Sandha Kavigal from Metti and Idhu oru Nila Kaalam from tik tik tik..what creations!!

rAjA,
that reference to pEsak kUdAdhu was only to show that mottai had liberally used different styles of music in the
earlier days of his career when people didn't even know them (let alone notice). talk about beautiful jazzy base and
listen to azhagu azhagu dhEvadhai. wow.
regarding the misrachApu thALam,what song are you talking about? (if you were talking about pEsak kUdAdhu, then it
is in 4/4 rhythm - close to chathusra Ekam. please correct if i were wrong.)

Aduththa varisu has another great song too - IR-SPB-SJ combo no: `Kaaviriye, kavikkuyile, kanmaniye vaa vaa' what a great orchestration for that song! And typical, complex, IR brand percussion - different ones for pallavi and stanza!
