ragapriyan,
the song is from priyanka *ing jayaram(who songs this song),revathi, a remake of the hindi flick damini.i guess the opening lines of this song are set in lalitha, they remind me of idhazhil kathai ezhudum. this song is in rex arul's site also, in case u want to hear it again.

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't have a fast connection + equipment
for listening from the net. Do you know if there is
a CD which has this song? Are there any other good songs
in that same movie? Was the movie successful?

ragapriyan,
i guess there should be a CD for this movie, its a fairly new one. the other songs were not quite as good(to the best of my knowledge and memory) and yes the film was successful.

Forgot to add this.. Most of the albums he composed right after the Symphony has very different and haunting orchestrations..( 1992 - 93.?? )
kattumarakaaran , puthupatti ponnuthaye etc fall in this category..

even the great 'ennulle ennulle' from valli with its wonderful orchestration came during the symphony period.

I saw one dance number from 'Priyanka' on Vijay TV
yesterday; it starts as jillaa muzhukka. It is a
nice song. Revathi and Raja are the dancers in
that song.

Hai MSK,
Sorry. Romba Naala thalai vachchup padukklai. Hence I did not see your posting. Yup, I have listened to the song you have mentioned. Please forgive me for putting it straight. IMO, the song is just another melody from IR (strictly IMO). I make this statement only on the basis of the tune and not on the interludes ( I have not listened to them meticulously). I am delighted to know your tastes match mine. Your observation about IR's orchestration is right, but the egs..:-))))) I would rather sight Guru, yathramozi,"Man of the match", avtharam, kaalapani the as finest of all examples.

Murali Shankar,
Thanks for responding.. I guess U have'nt listened to some songs from Kattumarakaaran.. Though the lyrics were'nt all that good some of the interludes/chorus were great !! Especially the song Atho antha nathi etc..
yes! Guru and YM/kalapani are all good but they came a couple of years after the symphony right.??
Maybe i am wrong.

a better song from kattumarakkaaran is kathunkadal ulle oru... too bad that the film itself was unwatchable(i guess even prabhu's fans were mad at the screening in santhi:-) )

Hai MSK,
thx for the link. The "Vetri vetri" song is impressive especially in the interludes. I found Rex thanking you for giving him EVK. Ca I request you to send me a copy too if you do not mind ? If it is uncomfortable, I take back my request.

I also remember that nice melody in kattumarakkAran 'kathungadal uLLE oru muththeduthu vanthEn, muthu oru raththinamAi munnirukkak kandEn ' Before its pallavi, there is a hindi version of the same which goes like 'neelE neelE sAgar me se mOti ..' . Is it by mano or spb? One of those fewer melodies of Raja in the 90's!

on: Mon Mar 8 16:36:21 EST 1999
Rameshb: It sung by Mano and Janaki.
Also, both interludes of this song are exceptional. The first interlude has a great violin piece and the second, a great humming piece. Its definitely one of Raja's best in the 90s.

This is gonna save some trouble for the Geethas of this forum. She's
been going hammer and tongs at IR in the ARR influenced IR thread; and
so it is highly likely that her next visit would be to this thread ...
"There is an ABSOLUTELY beautiful song in the ALBUM ____________________
(you can fill in the blanks here) by IR. It only lasts for
TWO minutes.
IR has done _____________________ (name of technique) , which
ARR had done earlier in ___________________ (movie name ...)
What a song. The song is in ________________ raga ,the same raga
which ______________ (name of singer) told me that he/she sang in
_________ (movie) when I met him/her in _________.(European city)
Although it is not as good as ARR's RECENT compositions, it is passable.
What MORE can you expect from IR?
Now ___, ___, ____ (names of un-objective IR fans) ; this should prove
beyond doubt my credentials as a neutral and impartial critic of music.
If you still dont believe me, then have you listened to the songs by _______________
(ancient music director). I listen to them. That should
settle it.
BTW, the next album by ___________ (music directors name --- anyone
but IR) is going to be _______________. I am eagerly awaiting it
because __________ (name of artist) is doing a ____________ (something)
in it.

People.. Have you ever listened to thaaa..aamtha thee..eemtha aadum uLLam paadum kaaviyam from pagalil oru iravu. This is a marvellous song and i feel it deserves a discussion here in terms of creativity. This song starts with an excellent layers of chorus [in par with thana-nam thana-nam of thamthana namthana thaaLam varum ] and slowly builds into a song! S Janaki had sung this well and I feel it has got some carnatic style in it!
This song does not seem to have any major accompnaying instruments [except percussion and occaisionally audible chords!] and the interludes are mostly done with chorus!!
.... A magic work by IR!

talking about creativity; i admit that raja has few left with him.
Butt he is more creative in the late 70's and thru out the 80's .and he is arguably the best md in that period( can be said the best in INDIA),
Ok lets come to the creativity part,
fr my opinion Raja's best album in the 90's is
siraichalai
kathal kavithai
kathalukku mariyathai
these three albums are truly awesome and i come to conclusion that siraichalai is the best
The rest of IR albums is just above the par.
Hope he'll be more creative like he'd been in his glory days

guys, in april 98, in this thread, a guy called ram posted this:
Before I proceed to do so, let me name THE ONE MOVIE which I personally rate as Raja's ALL TIME BEST. Now, I
am sure that most of you would not have heard about this movie, since it got released only for the afternoon show in one
of the theatres in Devi Complex, Madras, where it ran only for a couple of weeks (in the late 1970s). Nevertheless, I and
a small coterie of my friends (hardcore Raja fans) believe that this specific movie is indeed Raja's best. The name of the
movie is:
Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal
Literally translated, so that you all get the name right, the name is:
Eera (Wet) Vizhi (Eyes) Kaaviyangal (epic tale)
From what I understand from my brother, who is the only person I know who has seen this movie, Raja scored music free
for this movie (director was the late Bhim Singh's son). Raja has experiemented a lot in this movie, and the songs in this
movie can be rated along with the world's best recorded music such as Miles Davis' "Kind of Blues" album,
Tchaikovsky's "Swan Song", etc.
it led to a massive expectation among all IR fans to listen to this elusive EVK. thanks to rex, one song is up now, and i guess, others are on the way to being uploaded. we should get back to discussion on EVK now. the kaadhal paNpaadu song by KJY is mind-blowing. i could see elements of jazz in it(with the so little knowledge of jazz that i have) and the usage of guitar is also too good. a great song, indeed!!!

I just wish to make a list of songs similar in formulation. IMO these are the best of IR when it comes to pop melodies. A lot of guitar work underlies them. I have also given the appropriate links wherever applicable.
(1) Malarae malarae ullasam - song from Rex' site
(2) Devanin kovil moodiya nEram - song 17 from Rex' site
(3) Pooviley mEdai naan pOdavA - song 18 in Rex' site
(4) Uravenum pudhiya vAnil - 81 from REx
(5) kOdai kAlak kAtrey - 127 from Rex
(6) uravugaL thodargathai
(7) azaghu Ayiram
(8) azagiya malargaLin pudhuvidha
(9) kanavil midhakkum - song 164 from rex' site
(10)indha minminikku kaNNil
(11)adhikAlai nEramE - song 54 from rex site
For me they are compositions which are incomparable.
One good point abt ARR is that he produces less number of good tunes and hence I am not really in a fix on what to buy and what not to, unlike IR. :-). IR's hits give you more than 50 cassettes + CDs..
