Last week I could watch malayalam singer "madhuri's" interview sangeetha sagaram programme. She told that, " she is a great fan of P.susheela".. She sang a song from the movie "sree murugan" ( gananpazham), it was originally sung by PS and Madhuri. Two weeks back she told, "As PS was very busy during those days, I did some tracks also for PS. One good song "priyasaki gange, parayu ", which also a track initially and and they released with madhuri's voice because of non-availablity of PS. She was so happily saying "I have got the song, which suppose to sing by Susheelamma".
It was really nice to hear the truth from the people who are part of the music industry.

Hi vicky,
I was really delighted by reading ur mail.Superb.Are U a writer by any chance?Try your luck !!!! All the best.
Hi kalai & raj,
thank U very much for the support. We as Ps fans have some sort of what to say satwik emotion (I always feel that).Where there is inner peace only, we can find solace in PS songs. It's true that we should stop writing to amateur forms , but do U know a story in Panchatantra "There was a very deadly serpent which bit and killed all people in a village who approached him.a saint comes near that tree and makes the snake spellbound by his mantra.the snake promises him that it will stop biting.
After a few days when the saint returns he find sthe snake in a state of death.when he questions why are U in such a pitiable state? the snake replies "As long as I was biting every one were atleast scared of me but now look at my fate!!
The saint smiles and replies" I didnt want U to bite but did I say U should not hiss?
I think that's the solution.
Regards
Vidya

Filmography and Anonymous Part Active/Suspended Literature verifies that she (Smt. P . Susheela) had a verse recital in an earlier movie (1950) and the composer was none other than CRS. She might not have had her title credits as that was a recurrent seniority/prominence issues in those early days. Well they had Kanchanamala, Suryakumari, Bezwada Rajarathinam, Balasaraswathi and Bhanumathi to comfort them with their vocalise.
The movie was "Sri Lakshmamma Katha" directed by my favorite Ghantasala Balramiah (Balraju, Swapna Sundari) and the screenplay by Balijapalli Laxmikanathakavi and also the well-known Vedantam Raghavaiah, starring ANR, Anjali Devi, G Varalakshmi, K Siva Rao and the composer was none other than CRS. The playback was by Surabi Balasaraswathi, Madras Lalitangi Vasantakumari (my sources tell me that she might have sung and in fact that she sung in "Beedala Patlu"- Aswatahma/R Sudarsanam). Even Susarla Dakshinamoorthy with P Leela had a play back assignment though it is said that he might have assisted the legendary CRS but the information cannot be verified.
After all these years may be the Legend herself does'nt have a clue. But I am sure that it was her first introduction to play back medium and after all she deserves those credits...poor thing, I would give that credits to her. Thanks to CRS for opening our eyes and ears to such a divine voice ever flowed the airwaves of this indian sub-continent.
Then came "Pelli Chesi Choodu" (1952) starring NTR, G Varalakshmi, Savitri?, Surykantham (a familiy friend of ours and my mother had a close encounters with her including Shanthakumari and T V Kumudini of "Ashok Kumar" fame), S V Rangarao, Pushpalatha produced by Nagi Reddy/Chakrapani-Vijaya-Vauhini fame, composer none other than Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao including cinematography by Marcus Bartley and the wonderful lyrics by Pingali Nagendra Rao and directed by the legendary L V Prasad. Though P Leela ruled the day, P Susheela did have her day in court.
Then came "Pitchi Pullaih" (1953) directed by T Prakash Rao and the cast includes NTR, Sowcar Janaki, Krishna Kumari, Gummadi, Ramana Reddy and the music credits to T V Raju. The playback included MS Ramarao, Ravvu Balasaraswathi, AP Komala, Ghantasla, Pithapuram Nageswara Rao, Madevapaddi Satyam incuding our own P Susheela.
Then came "Kanna Thalli" (1953), directed by the famous K S Prakash Rao, Casting: ANR, G Varalakshmi, M N Nambiar (my sweet heart..interesting is'nt it), Raja Sulochana, Pasumarthi Krishnamnurthi and Sivaram. Composer: Pendyala Nageswara Rao and many lyricists incuding Arudra/Tapi Dharma Rao and Sri Sri. Also included our own P Susheela.
Then came "Bangaru Papa" (1954) which I had mentioned in one of my earlier write-ups, starring S V Ranaga rao, Jaggiah (what a personality), Jamuna (such an innocence hard to find) and Ramana Reddy. The movie was directed by B N Reddy with story credits to Padmaraju Palgummi and it had wonderful numbers by AM Raja, Ghantasala and P Susheela.
Comparative research tells me that in TFM playback singing.... guess who could go into their high C's and F's after Louis Armstrong (legendary Jazz composer)..after Kannan Devi but none other than P Susheela.
When I was remembering and assembling all this information as a wrting product, guess who I was listening to, none other than, the great Noorjehan, Shamshad's "Naa Bole Pee Pee More Angana" from the movie "Dulari" (1949) an excellent composition by Naushad Ali and also another song by Geeta Roy (such a spellbounding voice) and Asha by Sajjad Hussain "Darti Se" and "Oh Sapnaewalli Raat" and "Haule Ho" by Amirbai Karnataki" and "Hamne Dekha Pyar Mein" by Chitragupt from the movie "Guest House" and " Mera Naam Chincinchu" by one of my favorite composer "Ravi" includind "O babu O lala" and "Yaad Karoege" or "Hey Kaun Aaaya..Yeh mere Dil..Yeh Bahar Aaayi" by the immortal Sachin Dev Burman (S D Burman) or "Mere Jeevan' Ke" by Pannalal Ghosh or Rai Chand Boral (R C Boral). Who can forget "Yeh Tandi Hawa" or "Sunoji Suno Jaane" by Asha?.....Still rememeber (Aaagayae More Piya Naach Raha Yeh More Jiya) during my best/worst days in life.....and my Grey Goose. And forget not Asha's "Pagal Teri"......
What an accomplished composers they were (Sajjad Husain, RC Boral, Husnlal Bhagatram, Pannalal Ghosh, Naushad, Kurshid Anwar, Bulo C Rani, Shyam Sundar, Khemchand Prakash, S D Burman, O P Nayyar....Gave some immortal melodies like our own G Ramanatha Iyer and S V Venkataraman. Were they progidies?
The musical nuances they created were beyond one's crude imagination. I have collected songs from the early 30's and may be my north Indian counterparts will appreciate my musical taste and give me some credits including to investigation of any copied/modified old Lousiana jazzy tunes for movies. Listening to Geeta Roy/Amirbai//Chitalkar/Asha/ Surendra/Zohrabai/Suraiya/Rajkumari/Jayashree/Kursheed/Sulochana Kadam/ brings back my old memories and my existence on this planet.

Interesting info vicky! I think Kannadalli song is her first song which might have been recorded in 1951 ( i have read it in Interview of PS). Can u just throw some lights on PS song "pelli choosi nodu"?

Kalai:
As far as I am aware the movie "Kannathalli" (1953) may have her been her formal or official confirmation (as a playback siger) by the recording industry per se. I cannot remember her song from "Pelli Chesi Choodu" (just may be one song)......But she did have her debut in 1950.

Lovely pieces of information flowing through your pen (fingers, in this case). I did know bits and pieces of the above info you provided, but never was sure about certain things. Yeah, I too heard that Susheela was infact singing in the movies much earlier than 1953. I've even heard that she was a chorus singer first and then in one of the rehearsals of the songs, her special talents were recognized and brought out for us to be able to enjoy her divine voice.
But, I have to say, that although so many singers sang duets with Ghantasala, but it was PS who really formed the golden team with him. It is indeed an honour to be living in the same time as greats such as PS do.
Also, Suryakantham is a family friend of yours? Wow, that's nice. What a fantastic, unique actress she was!! I have seen movies just for Suryakantham, if you can believe me. She is totally unmatchable. Great lady, I heard, she was in real life. Very charitable and almost like a mother to everyone in the set. I truly miss this astounding actress.
Thanks Vicky, for all this great sharing.

No Problem Man..Anytime....
Oh Boy!!!!....Yes our family (maternal side) did share close relationship with her. You bring me back the great memories of Suryakantham. Great Smile and an Excellent Voice. Her performance in "Gundamma Katha" is definitely one to cherish. I dont remember that how many times I had seen that movie, just to enjoy her repetitive on-screen behavior.

Sorry for the digression......
But Gundamma katha is only one of the myriad roles she donned. She brought speciality to every role she played be it a small role like in Navarathri (ANR, Savithri) or the title role like in GKatha. Great soul!
End of dig......
We all look forward to more of your writings about PS.

Kaumudi:
An artist-par-excellence, her contribution and entry into Telugu Filmography can be traced back to some of the character-roles she played in "Dharmangada"(1949), "Samsaaram" (1950), "Prema"(1952), "Chakrapani"(1954), "Daasi"(1952), "Chiranjeevulu"(1956), "Bhagyarekha"(1957), "Mangalyabalam"(1958) and many more films.
But her character in the mentioned movie made a great impact and refuses to leave my thoughts whenever I think of her and am awe-struck by her brilliant artistry.
