Wow! Though I have read this article thru' the PSusheelafans forum, I really enjoyed it reading it anew! PS's voice is nothing but magical - wonder how such greatness, compassion emnated from such a humble soul. Hats off to her and also for such fans who have the great sense of admiration and appreciation for this remarkable gift!

Sometime back we had a little discussion about PS's song in Pichchi pulliah. Although I don't have the song link here, I do have some thoughts to share about it. I saw the movie very recently and noted that out of the ten songs in the movie, PS had one song which is "Anandamae jeevitaana", a stage performance by this actress (I don't know her name) on the birthday of one of the characters called chinababu.
It was one of the early songs recorded PS, I think. The movie was released in 1953, right around the time when PS began her career. It took me sometime to recognize that it was her singing the song. If one looks at the credits at the beginning of the movie, the lady singers were mainly Ravu Balasaraswathi and A.P.Komala. In fact, if their names were written in "24" fontsize, PS's name was written in "12" fontsize. So she was probably a beginner singing in the midst of already established singers like RB and APK. I was also surprised that P.Leela had no songs in it.
By the way, music was composed by T.V.Raju. The movie had NTR, Krishnakumari, "Shavukaru" Janaki and Gummadi in the key roles.

I just came across a good item - a recently released audio tape called "Priyaragalu". For those who can read Telugu, here is the link: http://www.vaarttha.com/vaarttha/cinema/raga.asp
This tape has two parts with a total of about 30 songs. All the songs are super hits of Ghantasala and PS and songs that every fan of PS must have. I thought it would be good addition to your collections.

Oh, by the way, these songs are digitally mastered versions of the originals which enhances the listening pleasure greatly.

Thank U very much Kaumudi for the great effort. I think, in tamil, PS become famous after "kanavane kann kanda deivam" movie. It was relaesd in 1954, I think. no details about the other songs other than her first song from, "kannadalli"(petra thai in tamil). Thats why I was really curious about this song. thank U for the info.
I find a great sync, and comfortness in PS and Ghantasala combo. I have all the ten CD's of Ghanatasala and PS (aani muthyalu) and many were really very impressive. I can say "prema yatralaku" as a sample. recently HMV came with 2-pack CD named "priya ragaalu" which is also have excellent numbers.

This tape that I mentioned is probably the same CD that you are talking about. Yeah, the period of Ghantasala and PS is considered, for good reason, a golden page in the TeFM history. How many countless hits have they given!! All these inclusive of every emotion that you can ever think of. It is just amazing if one ponders about it. Also, I have read that Ghantasala and PS shared a very good professional relationship. Ghantasala, I read, used to treat Susheela and Janaki as his sisters and invite them home and present them with traditional gifts. Nice rapport they all had.

Site Adminsitrator (s) - Pardon me for my extended rhetoric.
Its like Antonin Dvorak's "the songs that my mother remembers or taught me".
I still remember the first time I heard Smt. P. Susheela sing over the airwaves--more than 35 years ago--when she sang the "Aha Mangala Melam Pongi Varuga Mana Magal Vandhal Thanga Terilae..Aha Maligai Poovinum Melliya Madhu Mayangi Vittalae Undhan Perilae" and "Thendral Varum Seithu Varum Thirumanam Pesum Thoodu Varum" (the other details to be pronounced by movie buffs and historians alike and who enjoy their work everyday of their life)- was like listening to Balfe's "The Bohemian Girl" in my latter years as a music connoisseur. It also resembled like a grand entry of a Countess in a Grand Opera production of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" as Renee Fleming made her first appearance at the beginning of the second act to sing "Porgi Amor".
I was stunned at the absolute beauty and power of Smt. Susheela's voice. Her voice can appeal to those of us who are Smt. Susheela fans and those who aren't.
The association of Smt. P. Susheela, an exclusive Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy favorite artiste, in the production of this recording brings similar imaginative touches that enliven the recording of "Maria Callas-The voice of the Century".
After gaining considerable reputation in contemporary tamil cinema playback repertoire and a rising star in the later 60s arena, Smt. Susheela has delivered a spell-bounding performance. Her rendering of these songs unequivaocally resonates in sync with Maria Callas's "Printemps qui commence & Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix (Samson et Delila-Camille Saint-Saens). As well as comfortably encompassing the entire soprano range, Smt. Susheela's voice in its voluptuous and distinctive higher notes is rich and powerful, thereby convincingly enabling her to create a calm and sensual ambience. She brings vocal qualities of both beauty and fervour. Looks like V-R always capitalized on Smt. Susheela's meloncholic obssession with their musical tapestry.
Smt. Susheela had absolutely commanded my respect. Her talent, specially her voice is a wonder to behold. it has been described as creamy, tremulouus, rich, like being enveloped in warm silk, honey-like by Seerkazhi Govindarajan, Radha Jayalaksmi, D K Pattammal, M L Vasantahkumari, P B Sreenivos including her counterpart T M Sounderajan. Watch her deliver an Maruthakasi/Kannadasan/Vaali's poetic libretto is like watching Michaelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel Ceiling Decorations, it is an experience of joy and a lifetime.
It is the most hypnotic version I've ever heard, her voice soars and she is in absolute control, the beauty will just take your breath away (comparing her to the song title in in a 80s Tom Cruise's movie "Top Gun"-not that Tom Cruise is a celebrated artist himself, but time and again he misses his oscar even after some brilliant performances).
Her "Maalai pozhudin Mayakathilae" is a knockout. May be the so called new era singers/critics should know how to deliver that kind of punch themselves before claiming celebrity status.
For years, I have grown up with listening to music from and admired Suryakumari, Pushpavalli, Bala Thirupurasundari, Salem S Jayalakshmi, N C Vasanthakokilam, Kannamba, Balasaraswathi, Bezawada Rajarathinam, M S Rajeswari, S Varalakshmi, T G Kamala Devi, M L Vasanthakumari, P A Periyanayaki, T V Rathinam, Bhanumathi, P G Krishnaveni, P Leela, L R Easwari, S Janaki, Vani Jayaram's vocal talents but none is so awesome and convincing as that of P Susheela's thick and creamy voice.
These vocal recitals certainly lives up to her title as a legend. One can certainly appreciate her performances are rich with interpretive nuances, wonder-filled portamentos and word colorings that reflect a long history associated with this repertoire.
These songs is just an exhibition of her genius as a soprano and all great singers are blamed for making it appear that songs were tailor-made for them. Of Course she did inject her own brand of style and vocal-techniques but they are also so beautiful to listen to.
The wonderful telugu mezzo-soprano's voice and particular gifts were tailor-made for Kannadasan/Vaali's/V-R's long, flowing, arching melodies. Indeed, in all of her renditions, as far as breath control is concerned, Susheela almost outdoes P Leela; with regard to beauty of tone, she gives P G Krishnaveni run for her nuances; and interpretatively even Ravvu Balasaraswathi would be proud.
Susheela's is absolutely evenly produced, her sense of legato is ravishing and her musical intelligence is keen. I doubt during my time on this earth, if "Malaipozhuthin Mayakathilae or Thendral Varum or Ennai Eduthu Kangal Engae, Solai Puspangale, Undhan Azhagenna, Anbil Malarntha, Ondrodu Ondranome or Thookanagkuruvi Kudu" will ever be sung so divine and beautifully again.
For sometime now I have been pondering which set of the greatest songs should I include to write upon for the greatest voice, and the decision had become so hard. I finally decided on some of the above songs for several reasons, and for those who want the best all around performance these recitals are definitely the best pick.
Smt. Susheela has the most georgous voice in the tamil film music world today. Her huge, warm sound pours over GR/KVM/VR/SRR/TVR/IR and countless others, I think she can hold her breath longer even for current crop of composers.
As a lover of the songs for the amazing German,Italian, Latin text as much as the music itself, musical interpretation was at the top of my list when deciding what songs of her to choose.
These songs are just another example that Smt Susheela's voice and artistry stand alone above all in the south indian film music. Its truly breathtaking...to listen to her vocalise.

Just wonderful Vicky!
>>I was stunned at the absolute beauty and power of Smt. Susheela's voice
great! Its my openion too. I can say, U have brought my inner feelings on PS which, I dont know to express. Thanks!
I find lots of flexibility also in her voice.. Just a high pitched song link "paal polave" or "devatharu poothu"(mal), she has absolute control over the voice and never shrills.
Songs like, "ninnatithaka"(tel), "mannavan vandhanadi" got the thick, powerful voice. Other end U can find very soft ones "Enna paravai siragadithu", "jorumeethunnavu"(tel), mayangugiral oru maadhu. Moreover, most of her songs are within the boundary(not overdoing).
