I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Subbudu says - "the audience sat on end as Vani reached the end of the fourth octave in madhyama shruti". I am confused with this statement. With my very elementary knowledge of notations and chords, I think the fourth octave (and here he implies ati-ati-tar madhyam) is almost impossible. even classical singers havent traversed such dizzy heights. Can u elaborate on this please? Even if he meant the madhyama shruti was from the lower octave (considering Vani's normal pitch) , he still means she reached ati-tar madhyam. Even that seems very very difficult and almost impossible to me.
Am I missing sth.? Most probably I am. Please help me!

Uploaded a bunch of songs in my website. Thanks to contributions from vgs and s0.
Naaz, you said "mAn kaNdEn mAn kaNdEn, nAn unnaiththAn kaNdEn" instead of "mAn kandEn mAn kaNdEn, mAnEthAn nAn kaNdEn". You did pause after the first line because you were not sure about the second line.

Thanks for that confirmation, Neel. I will try and be more attentive next time around. Kik, thanks for pointing out this mix-up. It is good to have such feedback...and one can always make things flawless. I will bear that in mind. :-))
Neel - I checked out the new songs at your site. Keep going!!
AVR - I have been chided time and again for being "serious" and posting "head-spinning" stuff. Let's not make it too technical. Also, I would be able to help you better, if I knew which composition Subbudu was referring to in that snippet. Check out rajaG's post in the other thread "How MDs choose singers..." He has a lucid explanation out there.

Naaz:
While u have been chided for being serious, it was in a totally different context.
Why can't we have a slightly technical discussion? yes I have read rajaG's lucid explanations, but my doubts remain. Subbudu has unfortunately not mentioned any specific song in that snippet. But since we know it was a concert full of songs in Northern languages, we can guess out which song it could have been. Since u have heard a real great deal of songs, u can spot out such ditties by her.
"Bole re papihara" itself was quite a dizzy height :)
Anyway, my basic doubt is whether an ati-tar or ati-ati-tar madhyam is possible for any Indian singer (not just VJ) starting at his/her normal scale. I am a regular listener of pure classical concerts (both styles), of which my city offers plenty, I havent come across anybody having traversed such heights (or I "think" I have). Not even BMK, Bhimsen Joshi or Pandit Jasraj or even Parween Sultana who herself traverses incredibly high pitches.
But again, as my knowledge is limited, I could be wrong. I see no harm in discussing a few fundas here. But if u find it awkward, kripaya "email"-dwArA sampark karEin :-). Takleef ke liyE mAfi chAhatA hoon.

Neel D, you are very welcome. One small request: can you post Naaz's programme on your website, if you recorded it with totalrecorder? I hope Naaz doesn't mind. WIll there be copyright problems? I missed the programme unfortunately.

I have no problem with Neel uploading the programme at his site (although it was not a VJ special - it was a tamizh special.)
AVR - Main kahaan shuru karun...without the song (subbudu's comment is on a "live" concert) I can't really say what he was alluding to. I am also not too clear on what you mean by ati-tar and ati-ati-tar (in lay terms that would be "fine pitch/ high wire" and "fine fine pitch/high wire" - lekin, uska maqsad/matlab zara gumraah hai...) But rest assured, there is a fourth octave - and VJ is not the only singer to have touched those heights. Parveen Sultana and Kishori Amonkar (as we are talking female voices) have been there (As have LM and other film playback singers.) I will get you a few examples and email you in a day or two.
vgs - a few of your songs made the programme too - as did your name in the final acknowlegements! :-))

Man Re music is composed by Raghunath Seth. He has two albums with VJ: He Govind Rakho Sharan and Moksh Ke Moti. I don't know the name of the ablum from which Man Re is. I believe, it is a later work by the two.

Music: Raghunath Seth & music arranger - Dhiraj.
Man re is attributed to Meera bai.

There is a very good VJ-KJY duet in "Mannuketha Ponnu". "Aanandtham Inru Aarampam".
The movie has some more good songs too. One PS-MV patho (Pondthenral), Gangkai Amaran - Shailaja (Vethala madichuk kodu).
I think the MD is GA. I couldn't conclude the MD as IR because the songs are tuned in MSV's style and instrumentation is done in IR's style. Can anyone confirm the MD?

Kalyaanamaam kalyaanam (mus: Vijayabhasker) has a nice TMS-VJ duet - machchaane achchaarampOdu. Found a few others in paalaabhishegam, shankarlal, kudumbam oru koil etc. I've been going thru' my tapes to record all the VJ songs on cd - nice work for recovering from the flu:-)

Mammuketha ponnu was by Devendran i think. The one who did "Kannukkul nooru nilava ?" Barathi raja movie.
Or oh .. Was it mannukkul Vairam?
But i have seen the song "aanadam" (with Pandyan) .The music sounded like Gangai Amaran s.
Vethalai madichu - was by Chandra Bose a reasonable good attempt at Suba panthuvarali for a duet.
Kik -Machanae was from Palabishekam by SG .Movie starring Jai and Sripriya.
Get well soon.
Has the song "sugam Sugame" by VJ & MV from Naan poota saval been discussed?

Was it "Enai thedum megam sabai vanthu serum"?
If so it is Ravikumar.Music by SG.I think you can get the movie from the old responses.
Naaz, you have plenty of admirers left still.Forget the miniscule number of "Naaz-haters".
