I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Naaz, if you could scan your paper clipping and post it someplace that would be great!!

Susi - You should try and persuade your local Tamizh Kalasara Sangam (or the closest thing resembling such a cultural org.) to invite VJ to present a concert. I am sure she would accept with grace.
Priya - I first have to find the clipping :-) and then borrow a scanner, apuram...where does one post such things?? Thaniya Oru Homepage Thirakkanumaenna?

Naaz. It is great that you have met VJ. I feel proud that I know someone (atleast your name) who has met VJ and interviewed her. At the very least it is a great trump-card during conversations.

You think so, s0? VJ has withdrawn from film singing (almost) for at least a decade now...And given how "fame" is about "popular" and "in-the-public-eye" personalities, I doubt VJs name has much currency or "trump" value these days...However, I am glad to have interviewed her. She is an exceptional human being and an extraordinary artiste.

Some light on how she picked up so many languages..to read write and sing.
Did she ever try music composing and direction?
Nice to have met people like you and Mr.O(who has lots to share his MSV experiences) in this forum.

But I dont think she is the only one to have done that amongst the veteran Indian singers

From whatever i have read:
VJ can read write in Tamil,Telugu,Kannada,Hindi Oriya,Malayalam. When the news about her Oriya recording came in Tamil Mags it was mentioned that she did sing from the original oriya lyric.
If you talk about veterans possibly PBS could be the only one.I am sure the other veterans TMS,SPB,KJY,Kishore,Rafi,Lata,Asha,Gantasala ,SJ never had the ability to read and write in the languages they sang (apart from their mother tongue)
TMS has sung Kannada songs
Rafi in teleugu
Lata asha in Tamil and telugu
SPB PS SJ Gantasala in Tamil
without knowing to read and write in those languages.
My question was not to show the other veterans in poor light on this aspect but to show VJ s talents.I have also wondered how the other veterans managed and excelled without knowing the lipi for so long.

about vj yahoogroup - sometimes i think its better to continue discussions here. many more people can post here than on the yahoogroups.

VJ was one of the first true tamil playback singers to make a major impression(Uma Ramanan followed). SPB is from AP, SJ, PS, KJY from Kerala, TMS is Saurashtrian.
Goes to show the tolerance of Tamil art.

It is true that VJ is fluent (both reading/writing) in at least half a dozen languages...and it is also true that if she is about to sing a "traditional" or "legendary" kirtanam or hymn (in a particular language) she consults academics/scholars/vidhwans on the exact (or dialect-ically true) pronunciation of the song (eg. would be "Kesariyaa Balmaa" or "Vaishnava Janatho" ) and works to get it "authentically" right. This, I beleive, she does out of her own curiosity and dedication for every song - for as she told me when I spoke to her:
"Every song is my first song. And I always tell myself before every recording: My best is yet to come."
VJ records every song after whispering "Om" three times before the "take." I attended her recorind of Kunguma Nayagi. She recorded 3 songs - first take was the final take - in a little over an hour. It was an amazing demonstration of her abilities and grasp as a singer. I remember that moment so vividly even today!

Another interesting incident: After the interview VJ invited me to join her for a meal at a restaurant in T.Nagar. The server at the hotel immediately recognised her once we were seated. After noting down our order - just out of the blue - in a karagarappana kuralil - he started to sing "Yarathu Sollamal..." in front of her. And then he stopped - saying: "Yepaddi Ma Kurala Ippadi Kumba Pizhunji Paadaringa? Yeppadi Ma?" - and then he walked back to the kitchen humming "margazhi pookkal aaa aaaaa aaaaaa" with his own attempts at alaap! It was a touching moment. VJ later asked him about his family and his children. She also left behind a generous tip!

will the geets and ghazals be only Hindi (and its dialects) or will u be including Tamil songs also? Are u going to include atleast one song from Geetagovindam also? Or you are going to make me wait for the next time you conduct that programme?
Moreover that site points to the University of British Columbia :-))

Yes, I am a UBC alumni (doctorate). I started the show 12 years ago when I was a graduate student. It was called Geetanjali then. I recruited a new co-host three years ago (when I found my other commitments to be overwhelming and couldn't give my full attention to the show) and we changed the name to Rhythm's India and got another hour added to the slot (originally it was just a one hour slot on sunday.)
I have presented the radio programme for over a decade - so you can guess how many VJ shows have already been aired.... :-))
BTW Monday morning will be the beginning of your day....nahin? (Call your Telephone service to just check the exact time difference - it might vary by 15-30 mins )

There is a VJ song which starts like "Mazhaikkala megam" MD-Chandra Bose who humms in between. It is a good one.CB s humming will resemble "Yamma Yamma" by RDB.Any idea?

OISG - The film is "Thariyil Vazhum Meengal."
VJ also had another solo in the same film which went:
"I Love You, Pani Thaen Malaiye (or Mazhaiye?) CB was another MD who gave many good solos to VJ.
