Vidyasagar seems hell bent on giving at least one song to Udit Narayan in every film of his, and Udit doesn't seem to put in an iota of effort in pronunciation, forget getting into the emotions of the songs. It's not the question of correct accent, but butchering of lyrics!!! Any ideas why VS has this dreadful fascination?

Nothing can be done as long as there are people like pratheepan, curryleaf who rejoice in looking for every reason to suck up to their fav MD. Stupid
piratheean, did you read the response from C~P ??? It doesn't matter how you pronounce tamil, because only a few unfortunate people have to listen to
you, but that's not the case when you sing for crores of people.
Only reason for the modern MDs to bring in people like UN and singers from other
countries at the expense of local talent is that these ba$tard$ think that their status as MDs go up when a nothie guy or foreigner sings their songs ... in the
name of variety and change.
Different and "new" singers are needed, but they should have respect for the language and people. Let them learn the language and then come here to sing. Believe me, there enough number of such people

"i was bein a lil serious.i just shoulda been clearer, what i meant is can the ppl bashin speak and pronounce thamil perfectly?of course there is room for criticism....u said michael jordan u do realize hes a bball player......?but the diff between healthy criticism and just bashing is posing solutions such as sum have said get a tutor or what not.that make more sence c~p?"
The people bashing him i guess would pronounce tamil properly coz they wudnt know the right prononciations or else! :-)
ofcourse i know that MichaelJordan is a Baseball player!! :p
and getting a tutor or watv is upto Udit..we cant do all such things man! ... he shud reliase the irritation he brings in people with his pronounciation ... i dont see an improvement so far, not even 1 bit!

'frustrated soul' and 'C~P' - I respect your views. People should appreciate bad Tamizh or for that matter bad pronounciation of any language. Well PS and Chithra did full justice to their songs though their language had Telugu and Mal accents.
Piratheepan, pls dont encourage such trend! Each language has its own beauty (I am not talking just in favour of Tamizh) - so lets up hold that beauty by appreciating good pronounciation and criticising bad prononouciations.

I think Udit Narayan is one of best singers around. He sings pretty well in Hindi - I guess he is used in tamil for his "konju" tamil pronunsation. (Like people liked Saroja Devi's konju Tamil, SPB's "Konju" Hindi for Salman Khan)
I also like his tamil pronunsation - It is different. (better than some of TV VJs - born & brought up in Singara Chennai)

Sriram,
Please do not compare SPB's accented Hindi with Udit Narayan's Tamil, which most of the time doesn't sound like Tamil at all. It is not an accent problem. He tortures the language to no end and one can't figure out 75% of the lyrics. That's definitely NOT what I would call "Konju" Tamil.
I guess it is because of 'generous' people like you that the likes of Vidyasagar continue to go for the kill.

As Sriram points out Udit Narayan sings very well in Hindi. However his pronunciation in Tamizh is atrocious. Rather than blame him, blame the MDs. It looks as if they write something for him in English/Hindi and Udit Narayan sings/shouts whatever he wants. The MDs probably don't correct him at all.
Lata Mageshkar and Asha Bhonsle have sung a few Tamizh songs. Though one can discern their non-Tamizh accent no one would say that they "killed" Tamizh.

As long as Tamil poeple encourage Udit he will be torture you not me I don't listen to his songs in all South Indian Languages at all.
Next MD's should not ask him to sing.
And Directors and Producers should not recoment to sing ok.
Then tings will be good.... including ARR..

C~P, thanks for pinpoiting. My earlier post should have been : "People should *NOT* appreciate bad Tamizh...". Sorry for missing out the 'NOT'.
Well, come on folks - try to get the point. No one is opposing Udit. Infact he continues to be one of my most favorite singers but not when he sings in Tamizh because to me the correctness of language *DOES* matter.
Comments, u were very true in saying "blame the MDs". I fail to understand why MDs have to invite singers all the way from north and bearing all their travel and stay expenses and have to put up with their lack of Tamizh knowledge. Dont u feel all this is a big irony!! People being asked to sing in language on which they dont know even a word??!! Well I agree people sing Carnatic music but there the emphasis is more on swaram and thalam rather than lyrics and baavam. So guys people stop encourage such lousy trend!!

Yes, I agree Udit's is not actually "Konju" tamil, but something similar.
If I am not wrong, his first hit was "Kadhalikkum Pennin Kailgal" from Kadhalan. In that song, there is a word "Kaiyezhuthile" proununced like "Kaiyozhuthile" by UN. It was delibrate mistake, because there was a word "Pizhaigal" in that line (to emphasize "pizhaigal"). It set the trend - people liked it, MDs exploited it.
I do think UN is capable to sing with correct pronunciation, but made to sing with out (to maintain the trend).
By the way, any one noticed he sings in a different voice in Tamil (pitch/style??) - His tone is much different when you hear him in Hindi.
Udit Narayan is a one of the best singers around. Unfortunately he is restricted by this trend in Tamil.

Udit is an average singer with a great voice. His allu allu.in my opinion was his best song.If he sings one allu a year then we can tolerate him.Now he is unbearable and vidyasagar and like minded mds should be blamed.Or maybe if any hindi md makes paravai muniyamma sing a hindi song then we can do with a few more udit songs

Who says you have to listen to the songs you can just turn the music off if you cant stand the songs.
If some one should be blamed its AR Rahman he started to bring singers who cant pronounce tamil words.

I think Udit .... has a great voice, but he has the hindi accent, but still he is getting a lot of chances to sing tamil songs bcoz of his poplarity in hindi... I think he should continu his career in hindi not in tamil! they should give more chances to singers like KARTHIK!! :)
