Can we list and discuss the songs of UR here? I think she has given innumerable hit songs under IR's baton.

Did anyone mention 'Nee pathi naan paathi kanne' from 'Keladi Kanmani. That is a lovely song.
If you are discussing 'ennuyir neethane, unnuyir naan thaane', it is by Jensi and KJY from 'Priya'.
I think Uma Ramanan has the best voice. She does not go shrill like PS or SJ or KSC. But her versatality has been limited because she does not enough 'azhuththam' (the punch)in her singing. If she had corrected this, she would have soared. Also she is slightly inhibited, so only songs that need subtlity suits her. This could also have been easily overcome.

oh! I forgot about UR's first song that time. It was not under IR. It was for the movie called "Krishna Leela" directed by APNagarajan *ing Sivakumar, Jayalalitha and Sreevidya. Song is "Mohanak Kannan Murali Gaanam". I don't remember the MD. She told that in Sapathaswarangkal program.
Also "Kottaiya Vittu Vetaikup Pohum" was by Uma Ramanan. I saw in a CD last weekend.

Hi, My favourite Uma Ramanan song is from the film Ennakkaga Kaathiru: "Thaagam Edukkura Nera Vaasal Varuguthu Megam" and also:
"Palliaraikkul Malligaiyai Alli Irraikka" from the film Balanagamma.

UR's pronounciation of tamil is excellent. She is very much better than SJ or Chithra. Maybe second to PS

AVR,
The problem with Tamil MD's is that they are the last ones to recognise/appreciate/celebrate their own "Tamil" homegrown singers - the marginalisation of Uma Ramanan and Vani Jairam (both tamil brahmins) is the case in point.
Tamil MDs of recent times are happy to have Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Sadhna Sargam, Mithali Singh, Asha Bhonsle mangle munch and murder the Tamil language - all in the name of having "Bombay" Singers sing for their Tamil scores....!!!
One wonders why tamil MDs have such a "mogham" for non-tamil singers - especially those who have no expertise in speaking/pronouncing their language!
A true case of inferiority complex, I guess.

Naaz:
Well with all my respect for VJ/SPB/KJY - I feel they bad Hindi pron. I myself have learned Hindi for 12 years. Many of my Hindi speaking relatives who have taught Hindi/Marathi at Unis say the same about VJs Hindi/Marathi pronounciation.
This does not reduce my respect for VJ who is the only singer having both Hindustani + Carnatic training. But I cannot be a blind fan.

Anyway coming back to the topic I cannot say how much I have loved Uma Ramanan's voice in "Poonkadhave". What a tune by Ilayaraja!! And her solo in "Balanagamma" was exquisite for sure.
Probably even IR was guilty of not using her enough????

I find it amazing that VJ's Hindi pronunciation is getting a bad rap here....To say that someone who has trained in both Hindustani and Carnatic Music cannot pronounce Hindi is quite simply a status of bias. Jitendra Abisheki (with whom I trained for a while ) had this to say about VJ: "She is perhaps the only singer from her generation who is capable of bringing "shudh" back into Hindi which film music has completely eroded." This is from somebody who should know a thing or two about Hindi diction/pronunciation? Or would you say he has no clue about Hindi, as well?
I guess, Pt. Ravi Shankar, Kumara Gandharva, Vasant Desai, Bhimsen Joshi, Jaidev, Naushad, OP Nayyar...must be wrong...or maybe they just need a good Hindi-ear specialist to give them a good waxing?
I don't believe for a moment that VJ's Hindi can be compared to SPB's or KJY's. Dauno Me Zameen Aasmaan Ka Farak hai!!
Sorry AVR, I have to disagree. And most Hindi scholars would too.

naaz:
Why even Ilayaraja,AR Rahman and so many others have often worked with Asha,Sadhana,Kavita etc. I am sure IR must have publicly praised their Tamil diction. Does this mean we have to accept it at face value??
Why Susarala Dakshinamurthy and Ghanatasala invited Lataji to sing in Telugu and Sinhalese? And I am sure they must have praised her Telugu diction. Should we say that therefeore her Tel. diction is perfect???
And thats not all - Naushad has praised the Hindi diction of SPB too. So what????????? Even Jaidev,Khayyam,Hridaynath Mangeshkar,RDB,LP,KA have worked with KJY. So his Hindi accent is perfect???????
And so many people who know the SA RE GA .. of music (like Pandit Jasraj,Bhupen hazarika..) as u say still say "Lataji sounds at 70 as if she were 17" - which is obviously not true. Neither should we accept these statements, nor should we stop liking Lataji just because hse has had this one limitation.
Its the same with VJ. We have to disagree. And there would be quite a few "scholars" who might disagree with u too!!
I feel often celebrities get into the habit of unnecessarily exaggerating certain things or over-praising the same. Its just their habit, thats almost inseparable from them.
NOM whatsoever.
