Surprising! Even after 10years, ARR still a kid in BGM. Even in his latest KM, BGM lacks a lot. Especially in the scenes where the BGM need to lift the scene. Does his musical talent is LIMITED only to the songs or his CREATIVITY misses something whenever it comes to BGM or does he need MUCH MORE TIME to compose it? Yeah, i agree perceptions differ. Lets see how it goes.....

Enpaa alattikareenga?
IR had his style, ARR has his style.
Why should one be superior to another?
As long as serves its purpose, we should be happy, don't you think so? :)

interview of lata mangeshkar in current filmfare.
Any music that you liked in particular in 2001?
I loved Rahman's music in Lagaan. I'd give him full marks for creating a perfect ambience with his music. He hits just the right notes. Gaane bilkul issi time ke lagate hain. Rahman has always been a pefectionist. Earlier a lot of composers went by the mood of the film. When Naushad saab did Baiju Bawra he composed raga-based numbers. Rahman goes back a hundred years. His music plays a big hand in Lagaan's success.

Venkatesh:
If you had seen in my posting, I said that "in most places".
You have given some instance in that film for good BGM. I have no diff. in that. I say that KaM had a very good BGM.
But, I did not see the movie for BGM, I saw it as film. If in that BGM impresses me inspite of a very good story (story should have held you together than any thing else), I appriciate the BGM, or else BGM is just like a private album unwantedly inserted in the film.
Best example to quote is Sethu's BGM. I had such an effect of the film for 1 week that I was always thinking about it. When, for the second time I saw the movie, I realised that most of the effect came from a rather subtle but effective BGM. IR was great in that. The BGM after when Vikram is hit on to the rock...wow amazing.

no jalra, no offense meant, but somehow i always felt that LM keeps "thookifying" ARR just to get a chance...... i don't know why i feel that way, but that's how i feel..... i don't mean that ARR is not good or anything of that sort..... but just my views about LM's opinion......
CF, IR has used a song itself as BGM in many movies (i would think mostly in all)..... watch KAASI - he would use "Ozhiyelae" song as a BGM - the catch is, he uses that BGM, after the song appears in the movie - not before that..... i think Kadolara Kavidhaigal had the song "Adi aathadi" as BGM in many parts..... but as Venkatesh pointed out, it will not be the *ONLY BGM*..... but still, there is no point in saying that ARR uses song as BGM..... so what, nothing wrong in it..... as long as it fits the situation, why bother..... that's the bottom line, isn't it ?

Common Friend,
Your point noted. I only wanted to point out some interesting BGMs for your further enjoyment. However, I cant call it "in most places".

>>> so what, nothing wrong in it..... as long as it fits the situation, why bother..... that's the bottom line, isn't it ?
ARR too uses songs only after it had appeared or just before the song situation.
IR to in KaM used TV song at the first instance if Vijay - shalini meet. Nothing wrong. You know that song has a sounding effect on such a mediocre movie (not story wise ofcourse). Yes mediocre , I will tell you why if I get time, tomorrow.

curses, i don't think u really need to take LM's remark to prove ARR's greatness..... with no one to take her voice as of now, i would just consider her comments as *yet* another, and not take it to prove ARR's greatness.... LM WAS great, true, but not now.....

How is LM not great now?
If her voice does not sound good, it doesnt mean that her judgement also had suffered. And if you are trying to imply that LM is putting jalra to ARR to get a chance to sing, well.....I dont have anything further to say

I take serious objection to the fact that SAR has not been mentioned as the king of BGM (rerecording). Nobody can match him for using various permutations/combinations of 'yEdhO oru paattu' for many situations in many movies. Not IR, Not ARR can do it!

Yes I am with (^|^)
the word "rerecording" applies only to SAR.
Because of SAR we now have
RERECORDING
RERERECORDING
RERERECORDING
RERERERERECORDING of the same tune for all the movies.

Again, we should not see ARR's BGM capabilities with IR prism.
It will be foolish to judge Sachin by seeing what sobers or Bradman had done.
At present and on a given situation how does ARR performs as compared to his contemprories...that should be the point of judgement. By followeing his track for the past 10 years, he is the best in the industry rightnow (again...amoung the contemprories), with KR,YSR, BW, Vishal and ofcourse HJ giving good competion.
But what these people do for films like dilse, TT, Earth, Andhimandharai or Kilakku C is what we have to wait and see.

Please stop comparing IR who has done 800+ movies at an astonishing song composition rate. (He is known to hv composed a tune for songs in 45 seconds flat). A giant in the industry with over 25 years of experience. Its an insult to IR if he gets compared with a guy whose age is his experience. Lets c where ARR stands after 25 years. No doubt ARR has talent and he's proving himself but its too mean to compare him with a legend that is IR.
Its like comparing Madhavan with Shivaji Ganesan.

Yes, you are right. We should not compare ARR with IR. It is comparing a person who is soaring-sky-high with a has-been.
Hmphgh! Madhavan indeed!

ROTFL,
just curious-when was the last time ARR had a mass appeal hit like lagaan-dont quote PP,star etc which even ARR fans were not happy about.and remember lagaan was composed in 200 for which ARR is reaping the benefits.just curious...ARR is almost on the verege of becoming a 'has been' as far as TFM is concerned.

Yes.. even yaaro took the avatar of a Disenchanted ARR Fan to demonstrate how unhappy he was.
Yaaro i love several songs from both PP and Star. Only phony fans like u were unhappy about it. I even remember u telling me that KM was not at the top of the newtfmpage chart bcos no one likes it and it sucks big time. No point trying to convince people like u.
Like they say, u can wake up someone who is really sleeping, but u can never wake up someone who is just pretending to be sleeping.
Jus curious yaaro..when wud u say is the last time IR had a mass appeal hit? I just want to see what ur definition of mass appeal is...

why no mention of Deva?even some (ONLY some)of his BGM's are amazing.the best example is Baashah.the "baashah, baashah" chorus with it's heavy percussion lifts the scenes where Rajiniis featured to great height.
take even Kushi, where the 'megam karukudu' number is played in a melancholic tone with flawless use of tabla.
Avvai Shanmughi is another.the use of thavil at various speeds in the background (esp. when Kamal chases the newspaper ad. that sticks to a girl's buttocks).Although a simple scene the BGM subtly heightens the mood.other commendable scores:-
1)Maayan-the percussion(even) in songs are really away from the run of the mill. The BGM is so very different that it surprises you that it's Deva.
2)Try 'Vaikasi Porandachu',Deva's first hit.the BGM is just cool.the mild Gaana flavor it carries throughout is just enjoyable.
3)Aasai had a very decent BGM.
4)in 'neruku ner' the scene when Vijay is confronted in the saloon.......just hear it.
5)'paanchalankurichi' BGM has a distinct flow in it.the judicious combination of folk beats (even if plagiarised)are just very perfect to the mood.
6)Kadal pookal, kaadal kottai, kalki all had BGM'S that were critically acclaimed.
