Hariharan:
If not the tune, the orchestration of KK seems to be inpired by Vannessa Carlton's "A thousand miles.."
Aswathama :
Wow! That is stunningly close.
You know, the overral sound+feeling of "Poo Pukkum Osai.." and "Pachakili Paadum Ooru..." in Karuthama is similiar. Infact, the chorus "Kokora koko koko..Kokora koko kokora ko.." and "hillforee...hillforeee..mangalaree.." is same.

"Gupt Gupt Gupt" is itself is lift from English number. I am not able to recollect the original song.
Karthik:
I have pink panther full theme song and it looks like definite inspiration for "vennila vennila...". let me know if you want it.

NaNbaN, A thousand miles came out this year (2002), and I first heard it on Radio, a couple of days back, and again today morning. Her website says that her song came out in Feb 2002. And KK was released in Mar 2000, and may be composed atleast some 2 months before release. Me glad that Rahman looked into the future and got inspired :-), NOM.

Amazing! Isn't it!! Now we know why ARR is on top. He can look thru time :-). The violin piece in Thousand miles is so much Rahman. I should have known :-)
I will take back my words.
Thanks.

I listened to poo pukkum Osai and MLube what a close inspiration. One thing I appreciate about ARR is that he is very good in adapting the tune to Indian style.
Initially Deva followed IR style then he learnt the trick of the trade from ARR and started lifting tunes from West. ASAI changed his style from IRish to ARRish. He recorded the songs from Pachnathan INN (ARR's studio). But Deva didn't know how to make it sound original instead he cut and pasted. Samething with SAR too.
This is my observation and theory. It might be a myth to others (ARR ardent fans).
Friends keep the revelation going.

Aswathamma....
If I remember right, we had already discussed the similarity of "Poo pookum osai" with MLube some time back.....if you check the old responses..or Karthik's website...it might be listed there.

Yup, I had added the Poo Pookkum osai inspiration quite some time back. The song is by Lebo M and is called 'rhythm of pride lands: Kube'.
Check out my site - Tamil - ARR section.

NaNbaN, I am not bothered abt Rahman, or Raja, or for that matter any composer using small small pieces by others in their songs. As far as I know most of the composers do that. I rather try to see how they are able to adapt it to their style (as Ravana was saying), or to our type of music. This infact gives another facet of their skills or talents (as Karthik S implied). I saw a show on the TV, where it is said that Tchaikovsky took a simple russian folk tune, but then developed it into a grand piece. The orchestra showed it step by step on the TV, and it was amazing. Please check this link ( http://www.dmsymphony.org/rhythmoflife/music/littlerussian.htm ) Same with Raja, when u hear Entha poovilum.., its like hearing any other indian song. Some times I see them as cover versions by these artists of someone they like. And sometimes, using others pieces may constraint the MD, example, take Hello Mr Ethi.. , the MD had to tune the song that would fit the mood and progressions of the used music (Now i donno the right progressions, something with 7ths, but one can sense the 'fit', If u know the progression for that, please please tell me).
By the way, MJ's Dangerous album seems to be a good source of inspi... for composers from my state (AP), i heard bits from atleast 3 different songs from Dangerous. Even Deva had one from that album in Kushi.

Bach's Badineree piece was also used by Raja again, in the 2nd interlude of Kadhoram lolakku (chinna mappilai).

NaNbaN, so now what do think of musical coincidence.:) there are just 7 notes...composers can think alike...dont you agree.

This is NOT a copy but since I found it interesting and since there is no other relevant thread, here goes...
Suzanne Ciani's new age track (released in 1991), Hotel Luna has a particular part which reminded me of something very familiar. After considerable thought I found it out...the prominent background music of Chatriyan (released in 1990, so if at all there's a copy, its the other way round!). This bg piece plays (IIRR) when Vijaykant is first shown in his official police uniform getting out of the jeep in slow motion...! Interesting!

Can anyone tell me which is the most copied song? :D :) ...
i feel, the best copier award shd go to De(the plagiarist)va.... he has outdone Anu Malik and the Xerox machine and shd rightly be the proud owner of such a prestigious award...
any contenders?

Another one from Deva.
"Kadothgaja" song. Sing that song a bit, only a bit slowly, you will get
"Koyal bole"
"manuva dole" (Not sure with exact hindi lyrics)
But, it is avery popular song and anybosy familiar with HFM should get it immediately.
Karthik S: This is your meat. Take it.

Hi,
I am interested in listening to songs that were copied/inspired by other music directors from Indian music directors. I am sure there should be plenty of those.

oliyile in azhagi seems to have a nadeeem-shravan kind of starting instrumental. why?

Can include this under inspiration. "aayirathil oruthi amma nee" from Kai kodutha deivam by MSV inspired from "ajeeb dastaan yeh hai" (Lata) from Dil apna aur preet parayi by Shankar-jaikishen.
The notes are very close for the first line and the meter is almost the same. Of course the charanams are MSV's own.

vambazhagan, the `oliyilE' song is an RDB-kind-of-song IMO (though the melody is not same I got reminded of the popular `surAliyAgE' -my Hindi may be incorrect- of YKB)...not a regular IR number for sure...
