Lagaan has been unanimously chosen as India's entry for Oscars Foreign Film Category for 2002. It beat Monsoon Weddings and Asoka. Though this is not the first ARR movie to be chosen, with Jeans selected in 98, this is definitely a more credible choice.
Will this mark a new beginning or open up newer horizons for ARR? As ALW's Bombay Dreams is more a Broadway production, this may introduce ARR to Hollywood in a big way. Or will Lagaan just find itself piled in the garbage can, following the very first round of selections, as all past Indian entries have?

"AR Rahman: Lagaan
The haunting soundtrack for one of Bollywood's most recent box office hits. With music by Bollywood's current golden boy AR Rahman, this double CD features the unlikely but imaginative combination of rustic Bollywood melodies and traditional Victorian waltzes sung in a combination of Hindi and English. A hint at what the future holds for Bollywood music."

An excerpt:
"Oh yeah, and those musical numbers... Anyone unfamiliar with the integral role that music plays in Bollywood movies is definitely in for a treat. The songs by A. R. Rahman are the sort of tunes that implant on impact and leave you humming them for weeks."

They probably made a mistake, S.
And in what way do u reckon that Aamir saying it's a joint British production is going to enhance Lagaan's Oscar nominations?

I doubt it. It looks pretty obvious that Amelie wud.

Though unusual, somehow I feel there is a possibility of Amelie and Lagaan sharing the honors.
Lagaan for factors like being based on real-life incident, victory of human spirit, and the way it is narrated and succeeding in holding the viewers attention till the end?basically, no unnecessary scenes in between. However, for this to happen the jury will have to ignore the unrealistic way (by their standards) some parts of the match are picturized (some shots I would say that I don?t want to elaborate upon:-)) So, it would depend on how different they can afford to be. But Amelie being a lighthearted movie (albeit quite realistic) Lagaan still stands a chance.

I dont think Lagaan is worth to be nominated for oscars. Its a good movie and has to be appreciated. No where on this planet will a movie be nominated for playing a cricket for 1hr.I do accept that A.R has done a good job . If this movie deserves a award it will be for ARR.
Lagaan's Aamir is no match for Nayagan's Kamal.
I dont understand why people have gone mad about this movie

Lagaan is a very ordinary run of the mill hollywood plot similar to D-2 the might ducks, Remember the Titans and a host of other movies in which the weak minority is shown to beat the establishment. Not that a great plot is a requirement for winning the Oscars. I just wish that the first Indian movie to win the Oscars has something more representative of the talents of the performers - actors/story writers/directors - a la Salangai Oli or Bombay.

^!^ :
Lagaan was a unique idea I say!! A story is a story. A story has to assume a lot of coincidences.
The actors really did do very well, aamir khan, gracy singh et al. the music was par excellence ... and much better than the crap that is churned out today. The dialogues were well written, even the BGM was excellent. So were the lyrics, the screenplay and even the introduction.
Right from the sets to the costumes to the basic idea itself was great.
I in fact quite enjoyed that "cricket match". And the way in which it was shown. A unique idea and well done Lagaan. It should definitely win a prize at the Oscars, IMO.
I quite wonder what was so very special in "Bombay".
ALL IMHO.

A post about an Economic Times article in the ARR Yahoo Group....
I was going thru the Economic Times of 27th Feb'02 and in the Brand Equity issue there was a lengthy article on Lagaan. It read as "Qayamat se Oscar tak" talking about Aamir and Ashutosh. It also had personalities like Parmeshwar Godrej, Sunil Alagh (CEO-Britannia), Shreedhar Subramanium (MD, Sony Music), Piyush Pandey (Creative Dir., O&M) going ga-ga over the Oscar nomination and suggesting strategies to go about promoting the film overseas. As an interesting part, Shreedhar of Sony Music said :
"The Oscar nomination has in a way been music to ARRahman's ears. The soundtrack, complete with the magic of India, is going for a crossover of its own. Internationally the album is being released as a mainstream album. We've modified the product, including the song book and made it multilingual. We're also tying up with Columbia Tristar and selling the music at the venue, retailing at the theatres."
It finally said that being a period film, the music has been marketed differently. They've also added the background music to the album. ARR is also doing his bit to promote the music. He spoke to the media: "Now the main question that arises is...should we market the film or the DVD. Lagaan is not your common Dil to pagal hai type of Movie. It was the first film that Sony started marketing 16 weeks before its release."
So, it seems that Lagaan is going all over globally and the music is also being marketed extensively.

Well, I was answering sincerely and not to derive any sadistic satisfaction. btw, I dont remember crossing paths wit u, so why r u so determined to pick on me? Ashutosh Gowarikar Interview:
http://www.screenindia.com/20020301/finter.html
He talks about the screenings for the academy members. Here's an excerpt:
"How did they react to the songs?
There was dancing in the aisles during ‘Mitwa...’ All the songs are very foot-tapping and people just had to get off their seats and celebrate."
