When did S.Jaanaki made her playback debute?
Personally I have heard her song as back as
to early 60's. Saravanan, you can tell.
2- When did VJ Raam had her first song?
I can trace her back only to 1970-71.

Outsider,
SJ sang her first film song in 1957- two solos for the fim'Vidhiyin vilayattu' MD -T Chalapathi Rao. Sadly, the film was never released. It seems, however, that the telugu version of the film was released and SJ had a couple of songs in that too- one of them being a duet with Ghantasala.
In tamizh, her first song, which was released, was from the film 'Magadalanaattu Mary'- also 1957. MD- R Parthasarathi. It was a duet with PBS- 'Kanukku nerey minnidum thaarai'

Interesting observation to share with this thread posters...Many songs by vani jayaram begin with great alapanais. Best alapanai example willbe katrinile varum geetham from movie rasigan oru rasigai, and kavidhai kelungal from punnagai mannan. vani jayaram is excellent in high notes with clarity and ease. Every song has her very unique touches and signature, IMO.

One telugu song of VJ with poornachander is 'Shree gaNanaatham bhajaamyaham' (a krithi). Nicely delivered by both in a film. Ragam - kanakangi.

MS
Good one. The movie is Srithilayalu, composed by KVM. Lovely composition. I don't know of too many songs on kanakaangi. One that comes to my mind immediately is Thom Thom...from Sindhubhairavi and the other one by IR is in Rudraveena - "Randi randi dayacheyandi" (a portion of this song is in kanakaangi ragam).
Sorry for the digression!

Is vani jayaram's song "iravil irandu paravaigal irandum yezhudhum kavidhaigal" available in any internet site? I don't know the name of the movie, but it is a very beautiful song. Can anybody help with this?

vijay/MS/Saravanan, you are most welcome.
MS, I don't think I have the song you have mentioned. Do you know what movie that is from? I will add it to my wishlist. I do have "Sri gananaatham" from the dubbed version "isaikku oru kOyil". I will upload it in a few days.
Saravanan, nice post again. I don't think I have heard "isaiththuRaiyil". All those buried treasures! Hope we can unearth them all and let the world hear it.
yvsmani, missing in action? Thank you for your song contributions. Come back.

Neel, where in your site is the interview? I went to the site, but couldn't locate the it. Help!
Btw, have you listened to 'Vaanathil paduthu sirikkum'? That's a nice song too.
Kaumudi- yes, Sri Gananaatham is a superb song.
Have you heard SJ's Srisaradamba (I think) from Isaikku oru kovil? That's a nice one too.
vkr, Iravil irandu paravaigal is from 'Soundaryame varuga varuga'-SPB,VJ,Jolly Abraham,PS. I don't think its available in any site, though.
Outsider- I don't know much of Hindi film music- but I think VJ's first film was 'Guddi'

Great work, Naaz and Neel.
VJ - such intelligence and clarity in her replies! she exhibited the usual diplomacy in answering questions about her "frustrations" in HFM industry and when she was asked about her favorite song.
waiting for the 2nd part.

First of all, thanks to Neel and Naaz for this wonderful interview. Listening to VJ sing is one great feeling, but listening to her speak is just another one - I don't have words to explain. She spoke in sweet, eloquent english and in a very calm, soothing tone. A very down-to-earth lady. I felt so bad when the audio got cut off after 15 minutes or so. I am eagerly waiting for Part II and what she has to say about her south indian music.
Thanks again guys.

Neel
As I said earlier, the Sri gananaatham song is from the movie Sruthilayalu, composed by KVM.
Saravanan
I heard the song Sri Saradamba namosthuthae - good composition. I know it by heart. It is based on Saraswathi ragam, I think.

Thanks for the interview. VJ was quite frank when she said that she was willing to sing latest songs. She seems to be quite experienced in this interviewing thing. her answers were elaborate, hardly needing further probing from Naaz. I would have preferred more technical stuff and perhaps, some singing. but, it was quite good to just listen to her speak in crystal clear, good English.

OK, I heard the 2nd part of the interview. Wonderful!! Now for the 3rd part, where is that? Alas! no more parts of this beautiful interview. To me, it feels like listening to her even more. I felt sorry about her Nandha song being cut off. She was pretty candid about many other issues too. As s0 said, I was patiently waiting for her to do some singing. But I guess there wasn't enough time for everything.
In any case, it was worth all my 30 minutes listening to this interview. Three cheers to Naaz who has taken the role in initiating this idea to the point of executing it successfully. Thanks again.

I really wish the present crop of singers in TFM listen to this interview and pick a few things about pronounciation/enunciation... in singing film songs. I wish some of the music directors in the present scene listen to this interview and realise how a veteran singer has been totally neglected all these years and atleast give her some challenging opportunities. Maybe its all a wishful thinking...hm..
Again I can't thank Naaz and Neel enough for this wonderful masterpiece.

Naaz and Neel, heard both the parts. Feels great to have listened to VJ- she comes across as a very gracious and cultured person, humble and at the same time (quite rightfully) aware of her varied accomplishments. Wish she had sung a few bars and also wish that she had answered Naaz's question on what she felt was her best effort under the 4 great MDs.
On the whole, a remarkable achievement by you both- a reflection of your selfless commitment and the passion you have- A Big Thanks from the heart! Kalakkitteenga!

Everyone who mailed in questions for the interview,
I apologize if your question(s) did not feature in the interview. You had all mailed in very good questions. But due to time and other constraints some questions did not get included. Sorry about that.
