I just noticed a minor mistake in the Telugu page3 in the website. The last song is NOT "Ninneti suryudu" rather it is "Minneti sooreedu". Can you pls make that correction.

Sorry for the short break.
Vani Oru Thodarkathai now enters the year 1977.
As usual, let us meander a bit to wonder how the tfm scene in 1977 would have been.
Again, how I wish I was sufficiently old during those exciting years. How I envy those who had the thrill of listening to those songs when they first came out, who read the reviews, who saw those films in the theatres--!
All I can do is try to imagine the tfm scene then- Friends who were at the right age at the right time- please share your thoughts and memories—
Ilayaraja had arrived the previous year, and while he had only 4 films in 1976, in 1977, the number had increased to 12. His music was refreshingly different and there was mesmerising magic in his early creations. His clientele this year ranged from newcomers SA Rajkannu-Bharathiraja (16 Vayathiniley) to hitherto staunch MSV camp old-timers like Balaji-Sivaji (Deepam).
MSV was not much affected by this new star on the horizon, at least initially. He had 20 films in hand this year, and many of them had memorable songs.
Chandrabose made his arrival felt, both as a singer (Aaru Pushpangal) and as a Music Director (Madhura Geetham).
Veteran S V Venkataraman composed music after a long gap for ‘Sri Krishna Leela’, which would be his last film.
TMS composed the music for ‘Balapareetchai’ in which there were a couple of good songs.
V Dakshinamoorthi was spellbinding in Nanda En Nila.
KVM, V Kumar, Vijayabhaskar, SG and Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan were the others in the reckoning.
Among the singers, SJ was painting the town red. After 20 years of being in the industry, she won her first National award this year for her ‘Sendhoorappoovey’.
She bagged the TN State Government award too for 1977. The Janaki juggernaut, with Illayaraja in the driver’s seat, had started on its historic journey. And whilst she gave hit after hit under Illayaraja, others MDs too were giving her songs in greater numbers than ever before. For example, MSV made ‘Avargal’ a scintillating SJ show all the way, KVM ensured that she gave ‘Oru kodi sugam’- Mazhai Megham, SG made her ask ‘Varalaamo Sugam tharalaamo?’ in Aasai Manaivi and V Kumar gave her the haunting ‘Ennai azhaithathu yaaradhu kanna’- Oruvanukku Oruthi.
PS continued to play a major role in the proceedings. While MSV gave her wonderful songs ( Vanakkam pala murai sonnen, Asadaatum aambalaya, Edho oru nadhiyil, Annan oru koyilendraal--), she was also very much part of Illayaraja’s works this year ( Thenil aadum roja, Sugamo aayiram, Chella pillai saravanan, Sevvandhi poo mudicha chinnakka, Kannan enna sonnaan, Oru kaadhal devathai--). And of course, the SG-Devar combo would always swear by her (Aatukkara Alamelu, Swargam Naragam). V Kumar too, stood by his favourite singer- Vaazhvil Sowbhaagiyam vandhadhu and Pennalla nee oru bommai were outstanding creations from this collaboration in 1977.
Sujatha, hardly in her teens, made waves with ‘Kaalai paniyil’ –Gayatri and ‘Kaadhal Oviyam’-Kavikkuyil. BSS made everyone sit up wth ‘Vaazhve mayamaa’.
T K Kala sang ‘Oru Kaadhal samrajyam kannil varaindhaal’- Nanda En Nila while Renuka gave the rollicking ‘Suraangani’- Avar Enekke Sondham.
Among the veterans, S Varalakshmi enchanted listeners with her soulful ‘Kanniraindha uruvam Kanna’- Sri Krishna Leela. And in the same film, TV Rathnam and Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi were captivating in ‘Anbe uyarndhadhu avaniyiley’. LRE was but a feeble shadow of her former boisterous self in ‘Vaangadi chittukkala’- Pattina Pravesam.
In this year of sweeping changes and wonderful music, let us dwell on Vani’s songs.
As usual, let us commence with her work with the Mellisai Mannar.
79. Mannulagil indru Devan- Punitha Anthoniar- MSV
(Solos Page 1)
‘And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill towards men.’
What a tour de force song we are beginning the year with! What wonderful tidings VJ brings in this song!
Punitha Anthoniar was another film in the line of Christian devotionals that appeared from time to time over the decades (Gnaana Soundari- Citadel and Gemini versions- both 1948, Magadalanaattu Mary-1957, Annai Velankanni-1971, Villiyanoor Madha-1983 and Kuzhandhai Yesu-1984, not counting dubbed films like Karunamoorthi and Jesus).
The film starred Muthuraman, Jayachitra, Major S, Savithri and some others.
Another famous song from the film is ‘Anandamaanadhu arpudhamaanathu naan andha marundhai kandu konden’- KJY.
Vinnil thondrum thaaragaiyellaam Devadhaiyaagum—
Vennilavo Devan amarum vaaganamaagum—
Gyanajothiye, Uyarvaana jothiye—
Thaanagave ulagail irangum Dharmajothiye!
Mannulagil indru Devan irangi varugiraan
Nalla manithar naduvil kuzhandhai vadivam perugiraan
Ennilaatha adhisayangal seithu kaattave
Oru punnianin madiyinile pudhalvan aagiraan
Mazhalai mozhigal ketkka ketkka manadhu thulladho
Madiyil vandhu amarum pothu mayakkam kollaatho
Paarvai pattaal pothum nam paavam yaavum pogum
Kaigal thottaal pothum udan kavalai ellaam theerum
Adiyavarin madiyiniley Aandavaraam Pillai
Aravanaikkum adiyavaro Iraivanukkum Annai
Kodumai paavam thuyarilirundhu meetppavar vandhaar
Kulam thazhaikka kuzhandhaiyaaga meippavar vandhaar
Fervour-filled lyrics (Thanjaivaanan- Real name: Govindaramanujam), heralding the birth of the Lord. The tolling of the church bells and the choral voices set the mood for this divine song- and Vani makes us close our eyes and bow our heads with the thogayraa itself. Wonderful music by MSV- indeed the song takes on a hallowed aura of a powerful psalm, and Vani glitters as the harbinger of happiness. She changes the pallavi in the end to ‘Mannulagil indru devan vandhu iranginaan’- announcing that the Lord is already born.
Vaniyin paadal ketkka ketkka manadhu thulladho!
80. Naalu pakkam vedarundu- Annan Oru Kovil- SPB-MSV
Sivaji Productions’ film starring the Nadigar Thilagam, along with Sujatha, Sumitra, Jaiganesh, Manorama and others. Sivaji wore glasses in the film, which was considered rather trendy just then. Rajini would follow in ‘Dharmayudham’, while Kamal would affect it in ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’. I think he was bespectacled earlier in ‘Manmadha leelai’too.
I saw the film long back, so have only a hazy recollection of the storyline. Sivaji plays a doctor who dots on his only sister, Sumitra. She suddenly disappears after being molested. She loses her memory and is taken care of by Jaiganesh, who is also a doctor. Jaiganesh marries her and she slowly regains her memory after he sings her song ‘Annan oru Kovil endraal’.
Meanwhile Sivaji is on the run, having committed some crime, perhaps the murder of the villain (Mohanbabu?). His pair is Sujatha, and they indulge in some romance while being chased by the police.
Other good songs from the film include TMS’s manam veesum ‘Malligai mullai’ and ‘Annan oru kovilendraal’- PS and SPB versions.
SPB:Naalu pakkam vedarundu
naduviniley maanirandu kaadhal, inba kaadhal
Ammamma, Ennamma--
VJ: Kaatiniley koodukkatti
kootiniley kuruvirendu koodal, konjam oodal
Ammamma, ennamma--
VJ: Aaranya kaandamidhai thodangu
Ayodhi panjanaippol mayangu
Saakunthalam padikka irangu
thalaiyadiyil kai vaiththu urangu
Ammamma ennamma--
SPB:Paalodu paathiraththai eduthu
Panjamridham kalandhu koduthu
dhaagangal theerum varai kudithu
sallaaba nadagathai nadathu
Ammamma Ennamma--
A lovely romantic duet, with an interlude- change of pace to indicate the chase!
Os special note are VJ’s soft repetition of ‘Thalaiyadiyil kai vaithu’ and the humming in the second interlude-especially her gradual fade-out as SPB begins the charanam is marvellous.
81.Kunguma kolangal kovil kondaada- Annan Oru Kovil- MSV
(Solos Page 1)
‘Long among them was seen a maiden who waited and wandered,
Lowly and meek in spirit, and patiently suffering all things
Fair was she and young; but, alas! before her extended,
Dreary and vast and silent, the desert of life, with its pathway
Marked by the graves of those who had sorrowed and suffered before her
Passions long extinguished, and hopes long dead and abandoned,
As the emigrant’s way o’er the Western desert is marked by
Camp-fires long consumed, and bones that bleach in the sunshine
Something there was in her life incomplete, imperfect, unfinished;
As if a morning of June, with all its music and sunshine,
Suddenly paused in the sky, and, fading, slowly descended
Into the east again, from whence it late had arisen.
Sometimes she lingered in towns, till, urged by the fever within her,
Urged by a restless longing, the hunger and thirst of the spirit,
She would commence again her endless search and endeavour;
Sometimes in churchyards strayed, and gazed on the crosses and tombstones,
Sat by some nameless grave, and thought that perhaps in its bosom
He was already at rest, and she longed to slumber beside him’
When Sivaji is on the run, he espies a woman in white in the middle of the night, who goes her way, singing her song- He chases her, hoping that she might be Sumitra. But, in the end, she turns out to be Swarna, another of Mohanbabu’s victims. She has lost her mind due to the trauma and wanders alone, searching for him, singing this plaintive song-
Kunguma kolangal kovil kondaada
kothai nayagan varuvaanadi
kodi kaalangal naan thedi nindren-
avanai arivenadi
Vaanil pugayodu varugindra theril
Gyaana thiruchelvan varavendum neril
Maanamariyaadhai avan kaiyil thaaye
Avanai en kaiyil tharavendum neeye
Deiveegamandro-
Pennukku thaali
Manavaalan thane thaalikku veli
Meththai vilayaattu sugham kanda pinne
Thaththai mozhiyodu thavazhgindra kanne
Thandhai varum naalai ellorkkum kooru
Vandha pinnaley padhinaaru peru
Naalaikku kannil-
Manavaalan kaatchi
Nambikkai vaanil deivangal saatchi!
MSV brings in the nocturnal special effects- the hooting of the owl and the suspense filled music adding a sepulchral sheen to the song. VJ turns into a damsel in distress and portrays the thoughts of a grief-stricken mind with evocative depths of understanding. Haunting!
82.Senthamizhil oru pattezhudhi- Punniyam Seithaval- SPB-MSV
The film starred Muthuraman, Vijayakumar, Sripriya, Fadafat Jayalakshmi, Pandaribai, Sukumari and others. Again, I remember the story only vaguely.
Muthu is a rich man, with Vijay is his poor bosom pal, whom he treats like a brother. Similarly Fadafat J (what a wonderful artist she was!) is a rich girl, with Sripriya as her poor friend. Muthu falls for Sripriya and Vijayakumar for Fadafat J.
They get married and start their marital life with bliss.
This song is sung by the two couples, while on their honeymoon. (Kodaikanal?)
SPB:Senthamizhil oru pattezhuthi
adhil naan unnai azhaithen
sindhanayil vandha thenaruvi
adhu neeyendre ninaithen
VJ: Thenpodhigai varum thendral edhu
Adhu neeyendre ninaithen
Kannkavarum oru sengamalam
Ena naan unnai anaithen
SPB:Sundaravadhanathil Chandirakiranangal
vandhadhai naan kanden allavo
VJ: Mandira kannkondu manmathan kathai ondru
unnidam naal thorum sollavo
SPB:Mangai oru kulir gangaiyene
dhinam naan vandhe kulippen
VJ: Ullavarai ennai alli edu
adhil naan ennai marappen
VJ: Angoru thampadhigal aayiram sangathigal
solvathai kettayo kannane
SPB:Anbenum sannadhiyil mannanum un madiyil
konjida vendaamo kanmani
VJ: Unnudamai indha pennadimai
Enai naan andre koduthen
SPB:Sevvidhazho oru sempavazham
adhil then alli kudithen
MSV evokes nostalgic memories of his ‘Nenjathai allo konjam thaa thaa’ in this fast-paced cheery duet. The opening humming and whistle leading to the pallavi give beautiful start to the song, and the enchantment continues till the last notes- the humming in the second interlude makes you long for more.
82. Nee Punniyam seithaval- Punniyam Seithaval- MSV
‘Tender, and bitter-sweet, and shy, I’ve watched you holding
Another’s child. O childless woman, was it then
That, with an instant’s cry, your heart, made young again,
Was crucified for ever—those poor arms enfolding
The life, the consummation that had been denied you?
I too have longed for children. Ah, but you must not weep.
Something I have to whisper as I kneel beside you...
And you must pray for me before you fall asleep.’
Tragedy strikes right after ‘Senthamizhili oru pattezhuthi’. They meet with an accident and Sripriya is injured the most- the doctors say she can never conceive now. Though they try to hide the fact from her, she comes to know of it.
Time passes. Fadafat J is in the family way. And Sripriya sings this song during the valaikaappu.
Nee Punniyam seithaval thozhi
un punnagai endrum vaazhi
Ponnira kadhirgal minnidum sudar pol
sonnaal kann padum azhagu-
Naan unnaal oli vidum nilavu
Aandavan thottathil aayiram kodigal –
ellaam pooppathillai
Maalaigal soodiya mangayarkkellaam
mazhalaigal vaaippathillai
Ezhai en vaazhvil vendiya selvam yaavayum nee koduthaai
Adi ennuyir paavai, ennokoru thevai-
adhayum nee tharuvaai
Vaanam paartha bhoomiyai poley
vaazhvathu en paavam
Indha bhoomoyai nambum
Maamikku indha pedhayin anudhaabam
Unnidam allaal yaaridam solven, udhavikku vaa thozhi
En ullathin noikkoru marundhillaiyamma-
Naan oru neerkkumizhi!
Meaningful lyrics, bringing out her innermost thoughts in a touching manner. She laments at her barren state and seeks solace from her friend.
I have heard songs in mostly similar situations sung by a variety of singers- ‘Illadha pillaku naan’ ( Appa Tata- Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi), ‘Kanna unakku enna kurai’ (Ellaikkodu- SJ), ‘Enakku neeyum’ (Thaali dhaanam-PS), Ezhuthigiren oru kaditham (Kalki-KSC-Anuradha Sriram)- to name a few, and though each of them is appealing in its own way, VJ’s ‘Nee Punniyam seithaval’ tugs at your heart-strings in an inexpressible way. It is an anguished wail from the heart and the agony makes you want to sit down and sympathise. Hark at the high note VJ hits in the last line- Superb!
Indha paadalai kettavargal punniyam seithavaragal!

What's more to add to your detailed, and inspired journey? I am usually so overcome by nostalgia and joy when I read your posts, that to call attention to small, negligible bits here or there (and theren't any), is the last thing not just me - nobody would want to do. Your pacing and impartiality (not to mention poetic unraveling) in/of the posts is both wonderful and welcome. Just Keep Going! :-)
Ek Baar Phir starred Deepti Naval and Suresh Oberoi. It was a low-budget film, shot enitrely in the UK. The film had a beautiful duet by Anuradha Paudhwal and Bhupinder Singh: "Yeh Patthe Yeh Paudhe Yeh Pho*l Yeh Hawaein...Man Kahe Mei Jhoomun, Jhoomun Mei Nachchun." And another superb solo by Paudhwal: "Jeevan Ek Sauda Hai..." The entire score of the film was subtle and sensitive.
Now I have to scratch my head and figure out which film *red NS,SA and FS...Are you thinking of Masoom? (it did not feature FS though.)
