Hi,
I bought the cassete day before yesterday.
The approach of IR towards this album is sensible. He has been given a platform to compose a musical subject and he has avoided the "dabbanguthu" songs in this album. If you give a hearing, strangely for an IR album, you can remember more voice than any interludes. After Bharathy this is one such album. It is not something that is going to break records, but all songs are sweet adn the voices are really good. He has given every singer their forte to work with, Unni has got a classical number (and he is simply melodious), Karthick as usual has got two sweet melodies and those songs grow on you. But the surprise package is Thippu. He has been given two contrasting numbers and he has done them wonderfully. I think this will be like an ARR album, one that will grow on you on repeated hearings. Still "siru siru siragugalil" and "Idhu varai naanoru" are impressive. Overall a neat album. Since IR is not in a compulsion to give massive hits anymore, he can churn out simple and straightforward melodies, a luxury that ARR does not have. Again which goes out to prove, that ARR has to do more simple projects and make more melodious music, than trying to please each and every fan (with different taste). I am more reminded of ARR's predicament by a music director in malayalam called Johnson. He does not have to give chartbusters, he simply has to compose melodies for situations. Suddenly fter ten years you all his songs were being appreciated all over the state. He did nothing spectacular. He did music for subject and kept the voice of singers ahead of any interludes. Illayaraja is in that position now. He can afford to work in many projects without worrying too much about stupid "top 10s" . which means he is relaxed and he can afford to experiment. ARR has grown too big for his own good, that he is under extreme pressure. Case in point is "Kangalal Kaidhu sei", Barathi raja's crime thriller. Being a crime thriller, it does not have to be really musical, but ARR's image is something to be exploited, so the market dictats come in and there will be five to 6 songs, which would mean, the tightness of the story would be lost and the movie runs a risk of failing. If it fails, then everybody will foulmouth ARR (which is stupid but inevitable). It is the same trap IR was in 80s and 90s and I hope ARR comes out of it, rather than go westwards seeking recognition from west. Coz, it is only in south india that they put music directors face in the poster adn promos, unlike in north or in west, where many of them don't even know who John williams is or Thomas Newman is inspite of splendid work. To tell you a fact, the only region which values music 's contribution in Asia and South in particular. If you can impress fans like me and you, then u are a genius. Coming back to ARR's back ground scores, I would like you to see 'road to Perdition" once(with focus on sound) and then we can discuss how good is ARR in this department and how far he has to go. In fact, that is one area in which he can put his tremendous potential to great use. He would not then say that "Bala and Kanika saved me from film music".
Once again back to mega posts!!!
Thanks,
Jaiganesh

There is nothing wrong with serious movie themes treated as musicals. That's our specialty just like in other movie industries special effect or kung fu is prominent even if there is no demand in the story line. We like our movies as it is portrayed now. A family value, Good rhythmic songs and dance sequences along with good script is what we seek. Without composers like IR or ARR…etc, there is nothing much offered anyway...

The only part of ML's post that i agree with is that Shankar is more intelligent than ML! :)
and yeah.. I've thought. U r still wrong!
Shankar's only saviour from further embarassment came from ARR's music in both Nayak And Boys.

A. M. RATNAM IS leaving nothing to chance to make his son Jothi Krishna's debut film "Ennaku 20 Unakku 18" in Tamil and "Nee Manasu Naaku Telusu" in Telugu, a big hit. The music by A. R. Rahman is the selling point of the film as it is youthful. The buzz in the audio circles is that it is outselling Rahman's "Boys" album. As the release date approaches, Jothi is tense, but the young director is convinced that the film will talk for itself. Said Jothi: "Anyone who has fallen in love is sure to like my film. The film with good production values and visual appeal is targeted at the youth." However, the question being asked in trade circles is whether Ratnam can turn his son into another Karan Johar?
