I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

Another stand out scene apart what you guys mentioned was Kamal meeting kondarasu with the latters slipper.
The dailogues were simple and funny.

Friends,
Did anyone notice that in the song ' Annalakshmi kaNNasachchaa..', when Kamal ends the first stanza (for that matter even the second stanza!) with ' maanE, thekku malath thEnE', the song dangerously resembles the famous ' Kudagu malaiak kaaththu vandhu kudai virikkudhu (not very sure of the lyrics!)' of 'Karagaattakkaaran'?!!!

A honest assessment of VIRUMANDI
The film opens with authentic Alanganallur scenario. The people , the bulls, the commentator, Annalaskhmi, the trees, the bushes everything looks genuine.. then the camera moves up a lamp post to show an European Gypsy with the typical Dalmatian mustache ! While you wonder why this alien is shown here.. suddenly the face looks familiar and you realize it is Kamal! At this moment the nativity of the character “Virumandi” is murdered.
When Kamal took the trouble to chose the right persons for all the other characters why him for Virumandi ? His fair skin and the Gypsy like makeup in the earlier scenes and the Udipi Hotel Sarakku master look in the jail scenes just do not jell.
While you see the characters in the other rolls, you only see KAMAL and do not see “Virumandi” !
Then the scenes move in such a way that the audience in confused and confounded to find who is who, mostly due to the fact that the sound recording in the earlier part is so poor that you do not comprehend what they are talking about.
However there are patches of good cinema. The elopement of Kamal and Annalakshmi on a moonlit night is pictured beautifully and the situation song wherein the interludes in violins are memorable.
Further the character of Annalakshmi is etched faultlessly and Kamal as a director should be applauded for this.
However, after the flashbacks, the sequences in the Jail are just gore and mayhem!
The police officer suddenly transforms the brute virumandi into Sherlock Holmes and he is asked to find the escaping Reporter and his camera assistant while the jail is the domain of the Police officer ! The repeated chase within the premises is boring and not convincing.
Anyway, Virumani is a 1000 times better than that stupid movie “ Pitha Magan “

A word on Capital Punishment:-
The countries in which capital punishment is banned, they have a literacy rate of about 90 to 100% But in a country like INDIA where the literacy rate is just 45% and where people like Virumandi who picks of the Aruval at the drop of a hat exist in abundance, CAPITAL PUNISHMENT is a MUST! This will serve as a deterrent until total literacy is achieved.

"Then the scenes move in such a way that the audience in confused and confounded to find who is who, mostly due to the fact that the sound recording in the earlier part is so poor that you do not comprehend what they are talking about. "
I totally agree with you. I don't think its just the sound recording to blame though. The screenplay is all over the place. It wants to cover so much ground in 2.5 hrs (capital punishment, village feuds, prison drug racket, prison riots) that the director just cuts from one scene to the other at a frenetic pace without giving each scene its breathing space. As a result I had a difficult time comprehending the motivations of the characters and lost empathy to them. Kamal should have cut down on the plot (the sheer number of scenes is mind boggling!) and focused more on the character interactions.
All said, I still reccommend the film. Virumandi is an ambitious failure. It takes a lot of guts to attempt a screenplay like this that tries to straddle so many disparate themes. Even Kamalhassan's failures are better than other director's feats.

Velji,
Is it your honest assessment that all other assessments of Virumaandi posted here are dishonest? :-)
Just talking for the sake of it. Curses has already pointed out what I wanted to point out.
I think Kamal sort of new his fair skin is going to stand out in this movie. That's probably why he gave such a large role to fair skinned O.A.K. Sundar (Kottaichamy).

Actually, Kamal has talked about this.
In the Kumudam interview, he says that Viaramuthu told him that the only flaw in the movie was his skin colour.

If skin color is the problem then he could have asked Rajni or Vijayakanth to do the film.
If Rajni does it then he has to sing a song before speaking anything.
Jallikattu - Kombula pova sutthi song will be nice - he controls the bull with his bad voice like what he did in Mannan.
after that - a small dialogue - Ennaku kalaiyayum adaka theryum - CM yum adaka theryum
In Vijayakanths case -
Hey maadu, or nalaiku tamil nattula 50,000 madu eruku, 5,00,000 litre pal varuthu, 2000 kilo Sanni, ethunala Govt ku so and so labum......... ....................................................... no the madu faints and Vijayakanth controls the bull.

To all gentlemen including the "Okkali" one!
Thanks for the overwhelming response. I admit I am not any authority on cinematography. If I am allowed to criticise Kamal, then anyone is at his right to criticise me. But no "okkali" please!
All assessments are honest, I just meant that I did not intend to bash anyone. I withdraw my hasty comment about PM at the end. I am sorry if I have offended anyone.
This forum brings forth a wealth of information
putforth by contributors and everyone learns a lot.
A special accolade to "@" for his description of Rajnikanth and Vijaykanth styles of depecting Virumandi! Inspite of their apt skin colour they cannot do justice to the character of "Virumandi"
In portrayla of the character Kamal excells!
Thank you gentlemen !
