Pochuda!silly countdowns!
MTV il oru Nafisavo,Tanyavo, arai drawer,Munda Banian Anithu seyyum velai nalla rasaigargal seivathu illai.SOTD has generally moved up as an extraoridnary attempt to fuel genuine appreciations, critical analysis and bring out nostalgia. It has brought in a person like Era.Murugan to the forum.Lets not contaminate it countdowns.
If we continue in the same vein of countdowns we will end up giving " Weekly" Kalaimamani to Valluvar for his great couplet
"Agara mudhala ezhuthellam" and Ilango adigal may have to be content with II spot for his "Thingal malai" and Kamabar must be left wondering what wrong did he make to end up at III spot for his "Ulagam yavayum Thamula vakkalaum".
bb
Both might have been carved out from the same tree but Sanga Palagai and dance floor in a night club -aren t they different? We,the newtfmpage fans have elevated SOTD to the level of Sanga palagai.Hope you would love to agree with that.

Digression: Does anyone see "Ragamaalika" programme on Jaya TV every Sunday (9.am IST)? US viewers can catch it on numtv.com. The programme is pretty good with interesting rounds. Judges from Carnatic and Playback singing fields are asked to point out the singers mistakes and correct them on the spot in contrast to the SUN TV sapthaswarangal prog. The third round involves a mini alaap by the judge, which the participant has to repeat, guess the raga and sing a non-filmi song in that scale. Interesting. Some talented judges and singers have come so far.If you are a subscriber dont miss it, just FYI
Last 2 weeks the judges were Sandhya (P.S.'s niece) and Sanjay Subramanian & Naveen(flute)/Rajkumar Bharati.

Song of the Day: kaatrukkenna vEli from avargaL.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kaatrukkenna.rm
- Sung by S.Janaki. MD is MSV. Lyrics by Kannadasan.
- For some reason, this is the first song that comes to my mind when I think of K.Balachander's heroines (Saritha's soliloquy in Agni Saatchi comes close).
The movie AvargaL saw his quintessential heroine (Sujatha) pulled from three fronts: a sadist husband who takes pride in verbally hurting her, ditches her and then suddenly tries to get back with her; a lover who doesn't seem to have what it takes to make a relationship work; a malayali collegue who keeps his love to himself and just showers affection on the heroine. Add to this a guilty mother of her husband, who moonlights as her servant and takes care of her baby, to make amends. This was KB at the peak of his career, IMO, after the era of his association with Nagesh.
The song describes the spirit of Sujatha thus:
Kaatrukkenna vEli
kadalukkenna moodi
gangai nadhi sangukkuLLE adangi vidaathu
mangai uLLam pongumbOthu vilangugaL Edhu
- This should perhaps rank among the top SJ/MSV songs. SJ's singing in this song is pretty good! Check out her "ippadi Or thaalaattu paadavaa" from the same film.

Fantastic song bb!! SJ/MSV in full blossom. I am listening to a participant sing "yenna yenna vaarthaigalo" in the music programme. Two great ones by the master melody maker. SJ's opening akaara brighas, the brisque start with the chorus etc. are all wonderful. The chandhams in the charanam gives the visual imagery of a deer leaping and running away. The tune reflects the buoyant spirits of Sujatha perfectly.
One of my all time favourites of SJ.

Friends,
'avargaL' was shot during Emergency and was released during 1977 General elections. Vividh Bharati used to scream " ungaL vote-tu yaarukku? Sujatha 'avargaL', Rajinikanth 'avargaL', Kamalahasan 'avargaL', Ravikumar 'avargaL', Kannadasan (I'm not sure though!)'avargaL', MSV 'avargaL', KB 'avargaL'"etc.,
In 'kaaRRukkenna vEli? kadalukkenna moodi? gangai veLLam sangukkuLLE adangi vidaathu, mangai uLLam pongumbOthu vilangugaL Edhu?', you see a collage of shots with the 'asareeri' song, considered novel those days! In one shot, you see an Emergency hoarding " We March Toward A Better Tomorrow", a very typical symbolism of KB!
One thing which I liked was when Sujatha says (about Rajini) to herself: " ivvaLavu kodumaikkaara manitharukku ippadi oru azhagaana kaiyezhuththaa?!"

A Nice Song.. Once Again MSV-SJ combination..
Avargal directed by Balachander is a Class Movie
With sujatha,Rajnikanth,Kamalhasan,Ravikumar in Lead.. Sujatha & Rajini would have Acted competing Each Other..
When this Was Remade in Telugu , Siranjeevi Was chosen to play the Role of Rajinikanth & he did Justice too while Jayasudha Played Sujatha's Role
A nice Movie in both the Languages & Leelavathi - Kannada Actress played Rajini/Siranjeevi's Mother..
Janaki at her best in those days, Particularly during 70's
Ippadi Oru thaalatu Paadavo is another Great song from this film..
When i Think of Balachander's heroines the first Person to come in my mind is Jayanthi followed by Sujatha & then Saritha..
Thanks for the Song

A song for which SJ certainly deserved the national award.Remarkable singing by both SPB and SJ in Avargal."Angum ingum pathai" was another imaginative song from Avargal.I think i have already mentioned about the charanams elsewhere.
Naan
Vanile
Megamai
Each word had been composed as a full line,a very difficult one to compose and sing.
Gangai vellam,Kandrukutti thullumpbothu Kalil enna kattupadu - Lines meant for the character and MSV too.
A better movie from KB with less "paithikkara sirippu" from Heroine.
Always felt that this dialogue came first then Kamal s character was developed
"En kathalai ungakitte munnadiye sollirunthenna ungalukku yen mela mariyathai irunthirukkathu; aana ippokooda naan sollama irunthiruntha ANTHA KATHULUKKE mariyathai iruthirukkathu" (a typical stage drama dialogue but effective one,i accept!)But one of Kamal s best performances in 1970s.Right-side Vagidu Rajini,Urutiipiditha AppaLa mavu pol dead wood Ravikumar (We were to see him "active" & "performing" in Pagalil or Iravu shortly!),Ventriloquism - KB had managed a nice assortment of disjoint things!
Some years back i saw "Aval Varuvala". Though my judgements have always gone awry whenever Simran is involved it was a poor remake of "Avargal"(Sleeping with the enenmy>>Agni Sakshi>> some Telugu Pendli venture>>"Aval varuvala")Surprise was that Sujatha this time played Leelavathi s role.

Wonderful! What a song!
As Vijay has said, SJ's marathon humming in the prelude, with the chorus voices gives the song such an arresting opening. SJ brings to vibrant life the surging happiness, the new found gaitey of the heroine--The music immediately after 'Kaatrukkenna veli' and 'kadalukkenna moodi' in the initial pallavi reflects enticingly the undercurrent of excitement that fills the song.
Anu(Sujatha) after coming away from an unahppy marriage, finds her lover again, and she is all set to make a new beginning with him.
And as his scooter with her sitting behind him races on Mount Road, the song too gallops--like the words--Kanrukkutti thullum pothu kaalil enna kattuppaadu--kaalam ennai vaazhthum pothu--aasaikkenna thattupaadu--there are absolutely no fetters to restrain her joy--
A shot of Sujatha rebelliously plucking a flower in blatant defiance of a board bearing the legend 'Pookalai Prikaatheergal'gives way to another shot of Sujatha, with an evil glint in her eye, changing an ominous 'Naaigal Jaakirathai' board outside to a house to 'Naangal Jaakirathai' moves on another shot of her, with hope in her eyes, sprinting down the stairs of a temple (kovil vittu kovil povaen--)
A masterpiece in every sense!
OISG- SJ did win the National Award in 1977 (same year as Avargal), though it was for 'Senthoorappovae'!
