This is a all-time classic. I had a wonderful time when I did the midi version of the song (Listen to it in RJAY Midi site). Uses lot of jazz and Latin jazz idioms and rhythm. This will be loved by likes of Kishmu.
In the prelude, smooth texture of Sarangi fits very well with the mood. Unusual choice of intrument. I have heard only O.P.Nayyar use Sarangi in this style. Of, course, the song has brilliant string sections and Jazz guitar follow-up.
Though I felt that I did justice to the rest of the music in my midi rendition, I found it very difficult to capture singer's emotion while playing the lead melody. I had to take RJAY's help.
Thanks BB!

I have to agree with Mahesh about the heavenly feeling that one gets when one listens to the song 'yaar antha nilavu. The music is so haunting, thoroughly romantic and is one of the mellifluous composition of MSV. Though I personally have no specific associations with the song, it always kind of stirred my soul whenever I heard it in vivdhbharathi.

Superb superb song, this 'yaar andha nilavu'. Never for a moment does the interlude meander. Totally in harmony with the mood of the song. TMS is simply classy. What a song. Hats off to MSV-TKR, the golden duo of TFM.

I have listened to Sridhar's MIDI version of 'Yaar andha Nilavu'. In fact, I have it in my PC with which I love to sing when I am all alone at home :) He has done full justice to the spirit of the song in his MIDI version (that one cannot capture the spirit of the beautiful vocals is immaterial, for one cannot expect to reproduce the charm of vocals in MIDI).
A different song for TMS; he proved how versatile he was in that song.

Shivaji, MSV and TMS made a breakthrough. Sridhar made another! I am still amazed at how he got such a rich harmony, and the
subtlety in the mix.

Nenjathilae nee naetru vandhai is an excellent song too. Use of Latin ideas and the excellent whistling are very unique in that song. Shivaji in that song just whistles, no singing, but creates such a presence!
Naalam naalam thirunalam from the same movie is also an excellent upbeat tune with excellent music in the interludes against strummed guitar backdrops.

I remember the doyen of music critics Subbudu in one of his Carnatic music concert reviews mentioning about this song (words may not be the exact) -
"±õ.±Š.Ţ¢ý þ¨ºÂ¨ÁôÀ¢ø þó¾ô À¡¼§Ä ÑÏì¸Á¡É ŠÅÃ째¡¨Å. «Ð×õ «ó¾ò ¾Àġ측Ã÷ «í¸í§¸ Óò¾¡öôÒ ¨ÅòÐ ÓÊôÀ¡§Ã.."

Song of the Day: thuLLith thuLLip pOgum peNNE from veLicham.

- A great song for the weekend. This used to be one of my favorite songs sung by KJY, but I hadn't heard this song in years. So, I was in seventh heaven when GV kindly sent me this song in a cassette. What a beautiful song! The pallavi fits with the lyrics beautifully. When KJY sings "thuLLith thuLLip pOgum peNNE", I can imagine a girl skipping along, taking with her the heart of the guy.
thuLLith thuLLip pOgum peNNE
sollik koNdup pOnaal enna?
kanni undhan pEr enna?
veLLik kolusu pOgum thisaiyil
paavi nenju pOvadhenna
Ho!
So, we don't even know the girl's name, but just that she is wearing a veLLik kolusu.
The lyrics continues to be of top class:
bhoomi ennum peNNum
pottu vaiththuk koNdup
pachchai aadai kattip paarththaaL
kOdaip peN naaNam koNdu
En vaLaindhup pOgiraaL?
bhoomip peNNukkum kannip peNNaip pOl
nenjil eeram uNdu.
Not sure who the lyricist is.
- MD for the film are Manoj-Gyan. I don't know much about this film, except that it stars Karthik, and I think NizhalgaL Ravi sings this song on screen. Manoj-Gyan did a few notable films like oomai vizhigaL and this one.
- Thanks to GV for making my day (and the weekend too :) ).

bb: One of my favs. too. Are you sure about Manoj-Gyan. I thought this was scored by Narasimhan. Doesn't have the Manoj-Gyan feel to it. :).
BTW, Nizhalgal Ravi is blind in the movie. (Could be wrong.. have only seen the song on oLiyum oliyum.) so he can only hear the girl. But the saranam talks about colour etc. and ruins the effect. :(
I think it is 'Odaippen naanum kondu..'. kOdai En vaLanju pOganum. :)

Ravi, I am pretty sure that this song is by Manoj-Gyan. There is a distinct north indian feel to the song :) It is OdaippeN, my typo.

A captivating song by M-G. Thanks, bb!
Velicham-1987, was a dreary love triangle with Karthik, Nizhalgal Ravi and Ranjini, and this song was the only memorable part.
Nizhalgal Ravi, a blind man sitting amidst lush fields, and singing this song, as Ranjini walks past, spellbound.
The second charanam goes like:
andhi velicham mundhi virithu
pandhi ingu vaikkum neram
poo sindhum bhoomi ellaam naan vanangum kaadhali
mandi ittu naan muththam tharava
thendral pennae vaa vaa vaa
After making a grand arrival with Oomai Vizhigal-1986, M-G did some good work in films like Oru Iniya Udhayam-1986,Uzhavan Magan-1987, Megam Karuthirukku-1987, Urimai Geetham-1987, Senthoorappoovae-1988, Kaadhal Ennum Nadhiyinilae-1989, Thaainaadu-1989. Later they split, and Gyan Verma gave a good account of himself in Inaindha Kaigal-1990. I think he is no more, and his son has composed music for Abavanan's Irandu Paer.
Manoj Bhatnagar produced Endrendrum Kaathal and Good Luck, and composed music for these films as well. Endrendrum Kaathal had some good songs.

BB,
Another gem of a song !
Yes, it is by Manoj Kyan. I can vouch for it, since we performed that song (1987 or 88) in Anna University (Techofes?) and if I remember it right they were themselves the judges of that event. I remember how we thought it was a strange co-incidence that we performed two songs from the same film (we also performed another bayla song from the same film: 'gudu gudutha kizhavanuku', a scintillating song) when the music directors of those songs were the judges themselves.
My first feelings in hearing this song was if it was a remake of some Malayalam song. Yes, the rythm beautifully matches the lyrics : the 3/4 time but the emphasis falling on the third beat, giving a feel of the 'thuLLal'. I think Ilayaraja was the one who 'exploited' this rythm (Vaa, vaa, vasanthamE...) but also overused it so that many of his songs sounded so similar !

Isn't there a good song in Megam Karuththirukku?
- From: sabesan (@ 12.29.89.6)

There is one - "Azhagaaanaaa Pulli Maaanaee" by KJY again. The best song in the movie (a junk movie).

on: Fri Aug 15 12:48:51 EDT 2003
There was one more "so so" song - "Vadagapaati Aiyaa thuraaai".
ANd one more good one too - "Karpaaa Edhu Karupaaa Sevapaaa" - by some female, i doubt it was SJ. Probably Vani Jayaram.

bb- 'Azhagaana pullimaaane'-KJY and 'Azhagil sikkatha aangala'-KSC are two songs that I remember from Megam Karuthirukku (the male answer to 'Naanum Oru Penn'(!!) stg. Prabhu & Rekha)
- From: saravanan_patch (@ 207.112.61.11)
on: Fri Aug 15 13:38:28 EDT 2003
Velicham was directed by Sunder K. Vijayan Son of director K. Vijayan of K.R. Balaji's productions. I think in the movie Karthik donates his eyes to Nizhalgal Ravi, a blind, competing suitor of Ranjini, and hence the title.
Megam Karuthirukku had a black-faced Prabhu silently suffering the insults of his wife Rekha. Directed with customary ineptitude by Rama Narayanan.
