Listened to both tunes.
I like Raindrops better - maybe because I keep looking for structure, and it is more structured than Bees. Raindrops has well defined sections distinguished by change in groove. It has breaks in arrangment to delineate these sections and has a dramatic rising section too. Bass and groove are good. These are the plus points.
As for improvement, the bass line needs to move around and the different sections should use different tonal centers besides change of groove. This would make the composition much more effective.
Bees: the chord punches are very good, the pulse is set very well, to denote the constant chatter of the bees, the sounds are excellent choices.
As for scope for improvement, The leading melody played by piano is not a 'piano' melody. If you play in a sustained tone like flute or sax it will sound more interesting. The violin melodyline is not well formed yet.
Nice to hear from you after a long time, best wishes

Good rendering of Vellai Pookal. I especially liked the bass work during Kulandhai sirikkatuumae and the counterpointing melody during the repeat of the pallavi. The acoustric strumming should be brought down in the mix a little. Good job

Listened to your tune. Good tune.
Charanam is especially very interesting and unpredictable and fresh.
As I listen to all ours, the challenge I see is how do we distinguish our tunes from each others! Especially the Pallavis!

After listening my version a few times, I felt that the pallavi is a little lack lustre. I realized the first tune for the Pallavi I had written down in my note books had more punch. So here is version 2:
Sindippogum - Brisk version

rjay - thanks. Your first version reminded me of songs like "aawaara hoon" days. 60s music :-) nice to hear so many variations.

MS very nice tune indeed....and ofcourse nicely sung as well! THE choice of using both chatushruti and Shudda Dhaivatam(charanam) makes the tune interesting and opens up for some interesting harmonies as I see it.

rjay, thanks for your comments.
I appreciate your demonstrative skills on the topics of composition...some of your works are really cute and neat to be preserved...I still remember ur journey on perfect 5 cycle -> some moon kind of composition...your trumpet solo work is superb. Besides these, your tunes for pre-written lyrics...you're one of the pillars to this thread...you're so encouraging to be around. We cherish your postings. Keep them coming even if you're extremely busy.

MS, alternate lines in the charanam throw up surprises by refusing to be mere extensions of the previous line and also succeed in conveying a variety of emotions apart from the energy possessed by the pallavi. Very well composed and sung.Has the mood and feel of "Panneeril nanaindha pookkal"
Aditya, your Raindrops piece was quite pleasant to hear. The strings pieces(composed with Desh in mind?)added quite a bit of flavor I thought.

Udhaya, try copying the geocities link and pasting it in the address bar above, instead of just clicking on the link. It works, most of the time.
Rjay, I liked your ballad version the most, sounds like a casually rendered unplugged version, kind of like those Eric Clapton songs :-) Expecting more guitar works from you.

Aditya and Vijay, thanks for the appreciation and encouragement. More I try to 'demonstrate', more I get humbled by my output.
Allow me to ramble my thought process, hopefully it will be of use...
We cannot thank Udhaya enough for this stimulating exercise - without which most of us will not have the discipline to go beyond a faint melody of one bar phrase. His lyrical structure is forcing us to create song melodies. I am learning a lot with each attempt. For instance, the moment I finished version 2 composed here, I felt very depressed because it sounded like 70s SPB song even though it was a definite improvement over the previous one (which sounded like 60s Raj Kapoor ;)).
More specifically, I compared my tune to the pros. The pro's tunes immerse you into a mood so deeply. The tunes and arrangements give you so much of good feeling so quickly that you keep longing to recollect them in memory over and over. So my checklist question as a composer is: Does this tune move the soul to a strong memorable emotion?
This discontent prompted me to do yet another attempt which is definitely more sophisticated than the first two. This tune may not yet meet my new test criteria but is in that direction.
I am reminded of two things:
- Some director commented about Rahman as saying, 'Something is missing, something is missing' and keeping on adding. This restlessness is important for the new to happen.
- Age old story of wood cutter not being satisfied and entering into different lands and finding more precious treasures.
I am now convinced that we should each create at least 20 tunes for each lyrics to stretch ourselves and see what we can do. I am sure this is the way all composers have learnt the art of tune creation.
I remember reading somewhere that Raja composed 40 tunes for a song (Andhi Mazhai) before deciding that the first one is good.
So here comes the lecture of the day!!!!

rjay, very well said!!! One should stretch their boundaries to realize the extent of their creativity.
your checklist question comparing with pros is dependent on many factors...
- you may have composed a soulful melody but you're unable to perform/present them not so well...then? perhaps you cannot due to many limitations - lack of instruments, recording facilities, inability to play an instrument :-((,
lack of replicating realism with the synthetic instruments and lack of knowledge in some areas which couldn't be complemented by anyone but
you:-((...
Hence to me any music presented here is a kind of concept demonstration...whether it's MIDI, a simple vocal track or multi-track or 5.1 dolby digital version or whatever...we should appreciate them all equally and with full heart...With this appreciation, we can groom few of us here to build knowledge, perseverance and courage to spend their money:-)) to finally realize these concepts into real production work and then we should still appreciate them with a real great heart with no disparity on others.
Back in india, you meet some of the great instrumentalists and musicians that we can hardly match with their virtuosity...they may not even be able to come and chat in this kind of forum as to how to perform etc., that's their art. We should be happy about being here to talk about them for our pleasure...perhaps with some demonstrations and hoping to realize them into real production work.
Let's continue...

Mahati, I agree. Tunes have to be evaluated without the influence of add-ons.
A tune is a melody (with its inherent rhythmic pulse) and should not depend upon virtuoso performance, arrangement and production to move the soul. All those are ornaments that come later.
When I wrote does it move your soul, I meant the composer's soul. As creators we have to create what moves us and leave the rest to luck or reality or whatever, because whether my tune touches your soul is not under my control.
Having said that, after creating something I have to switch on my crap detector and ask, Did I create something new and authentic or was I on autopilot?
If the answer turns out to be the latter, I should have the courage to try again. Often, good is the enemy of the great.
