While listing his favorite songs, Ramanan wrote:
"Even though i have all the songs mentioned above in my collection, bus la travel pannum bodu illa engayavadu pogum bodu namakku pidicha pattu oru rendu vari katrula midandhu varum. enga irundu varadhunum theriyadu. Ninnu ketkavum time irukkadhu. adutha vari ellam manasula padindu ...Ayyo andha anubavam..anu bavichu irukkanum ya... that is one of the things i miss very much after having come out of tamilnadu."
I was very touched by this "chinna Asai" of his:
bus-sil pogum pOdhu
pAttu kEtka Asai
Many of us have come out of Tamil Nadu/India, and I think it would be interesting to hear about the chinna chinna Asais of various people... the things we miss most... Nostalgia anybody?

observer,
your aasaigal almost merges with my school and college day experiences. iam also from trichy. after reading u'r postings i became heavily nostalgic. as u said innoru piravi edukanum.
srikanth, unga aasai ellam niraveraradhukku pala piravigal thevai!
my aasai - i should have been in my teens in the late seventies and early eighties, so that i could have listened to more of IR's songs at that time and could have appreciated the songs better.
or, by a time machine i should be transported back to 75 when IR made his debut and should trace his growth.
another one - IR should rule atleast for another 15 years.

Bharat:
What a great thread! Since I've been out of our Motherland for 18 years now, I may end up writing a book here instead of a single posting :-)
Vijay:
Fortunately, I was a young teen when IR burst into the scene. His music was Everything a teen could ask for and More, then. I used to think of him as The Great Tinkerer as he tried out everything [his guitar explorations!!!]. In that slightly pre-mass TV era, radio stations were belting out songs from the likes of annakkiLi, iLamai oonjalAdugiRadhu, kavikkuyil, bhadrakALi, pudhiya vArppugaL, kizhakkE pOgum rayil etc., and it was a "cheap thrill" to catch any of these songs before leaving for school/classes and have them swim in your head all the way to and during school. All India Radio banned the Oram pO Rukkumani vaNdi varudhu song, in a desperate attempt to "reduce eve-teasing, prevent young minds from getting corrupted and to protect thamizh culture" [seems like AIR changed its standards manual now! :-)]. High-schoolers, college students, parents/chidren all had passionate MSV vs IR arguments [:-)]. Generally, IR caused a major stir and everyone in the industry knew he was going places. Obviously, I've been following his growth and changes in styles/compositional grammar over these years as my time constraints would allow, and I have my own preferred "eras" for his music like everyone else.
In a nutshell, your aasai is my reality :-)

Guys:
Do we see a reenaction of all the emotions that overflowed in the songs that touched us thread. Like most of u here even I can a lot of chinna aasai's. The first and foremost I need to listen to Vividh Bharathi fully all programmes, "Ungal Virruppam", afternoon "oru pada paadal", maalaiyil "Then kinnam" etc with all those advetisements esp. advetisements like "Appa Appa Kadaikku poriya...". In fact when I first went to Bombay I had a difficult time there, mind u this was pre r satt TV times, so couldnt get to hear a Tamizh song, theb when I was coming back I sprung up from sleep when I could hear a tamizh song in the first station when u enter Tamil Nadu. Wow that was wonderful at that time. Like most of u I go to the extent of stopping at the tea kadai to have a smoke and listen to the song, cos when I was in Madras my company had flexible schedules so u could practically walk in anytime. So it didnt matter if its going to be a few more minutes late. Like what Observer told I would like to relive those days when I used to go to Chidambaram by Bus and those stops near Chengalpattu and Maamandur where u get to hear those golden oldies.
For a long time I thought that I should if I set foot on a foriegn soil do so hearing to "Vaanile vesham kalaindhadhu...", and it so happened that I did and infact set foot thrice in S'pore but never could get my walkman working or get it in my hand baggage. Related to that one of my friends and I were supposed to go to S'pore for a project and we decided that we should sing "Sorgamey endrallum .." walking in the roads but still couldnt get it done as bot of us made it to S'pore at different times so couldnt be there at the same time. This one more chinna aasai satisfied.
Another chinna aasai's are that in that god forsaken Japan I should stumble upon somebody who would be a great fan of TFM and with whom I could talk at great lengths. I have been there with ofcourse my office colleagues, but the feeling of listening to a thamizh paattu in a totally non-thamizh place would be fun. This something like "Poo pookum oosai adhai kekka thaan aasai", nadakkaradhu kashtamthaan. Ofcourse I shouldnt be playing it.
The aasai that had been fullfilled was that my friend and I succesfully sang "Malairaani mundhaanai sariya sariya.." in front of Niagara Falls pretty recently. That was fun. It looks very childish for a 24 yr old guy but yes these do exist in us. The kid in us has these desires.
Anyway I think I have taken too much time of us guys.

Great to hear so many chinna chinna AsaigaL.
nakeeran: Considering that there are so few responses. your veiled references are very obvious. adhukku nEEngaL peyar solliyE irukkalAm. Udhaya's was not a veiled criticism, it was a direct one. He prefers an era of IR and has stated that. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure even you cannot like each and every song/style/era of IR.
"the other..where someone has his wishes about IR fans...". If you've followed earlier DF postings, Srikanth has never been from one camp, as he appreciates music and not the MD.
This is an attempt to wallow in the past, as many of us have left a considerable part of it behind. Please let that not get sidetracked.
chinna chinna Asai: Major thamizh padam/pAttu release Agum pOthu Madras-il irukka vEndum. See the posters on the walls (saying "varugiradhu...", then "indRu mudhal", then "25 naaL", and so on... ). And, of course, the huge banners, that were the only things you could see above people's heads while standing in a PTC bus :-). The fever on the streets when a film/music is going to be released is totally absent here.

Hi friends,
I think must of you are in abroad, so your chinna chinna aasais are really touching. When I read CM's aasai -- vivdh bharathi's advt. u really touched my heart saar. I thought it was childish on my part to dream but somebody wishing for 'appa appa kadaiku poriya - that dollar biscuit ad', really got me. Of course, now the vividh bharathi is not the same. It still offers songs but not exactly like whatwe wish for. I am not against the new songs, of course I do sing and hum new songs, watch the new movies - ramba vs simran - but they are fully satisfactory.
Also, I believe geetha has correctly pointed out the msv vs ir debate, that time was also good. That period the songs were to be heard and loved.songs of IR at that period are good and he had to fight a lot and show his strength. Raja was really raja - cannot forget songs of him like 'kannan oru kai kuzhandai' 'sonnandam illai bandam illai' , 'sendura poove'. 'vasantha kala kolangal' by SJ is one of my favourites. Like they say Rome was not built in a single day, Raja did not go to the top on a single day, his hard work only took him. Of course MSV also provided tough fight for him - his 'ninathale inikum' songs are still 'ninaithale inikum' - especially spb & sj sung tha song 'ninathale inikum' still has my heart. IR at that time scored another hit in 'Ilamai unjaladukiradhu' the title song by vaali sung by VJ and bala could now also be heard and sung by everybody at home.
That is the period where songs had both meaning, good voice and music, not just loud blare of music overtaking lyrics. My chinna aasai is return of that age where msv-tkr-kannadasan-tms-ps have given immortal hits followed by ir-vaali-spb-sj.
Another aasai is while crossing a river - a big one- over train - i should hear all these good songs in the early morning and have a cup of tea without brushing and feel happy.
I know it is silly, but there are many more.
bye

Ravi:
We do seem to be stretching this thread a bit beyond TFM-DF's scope. This is a great candidate for The Hub (your non-TFM DF) too.
I'll continue with more chinna chinna AsaigaL:
To watch a thamizh movie in a theater in India with all the rasigar manRa galAttAkkaL after a gap of 18 years now...
To listen to a beautiful kaNNadhAsan kavidhai set to MSV-TKR's melodious music out of a real mono radio...
To recapture the feeling of listening to the sounds of chendhoorappovE for the first time as it floated up to the mottai mAdi...
To stay awake in the early morning hours in the train to listen to the train cross the River Kaveri (koLLidam) at Tiruchy;
To see if chiththirai mAdham powrNami nEram song's rhythm match the real train sounds.... [:-)]
To listen to MLV's mArgazhith thingaL starting up at 4 a.m., while staying snug and warm warm under a blanket in the mArgazhik kuLir...
To listen to women in colorful sarees in lush green paddy fields sing their simple songs as they work (rAsAththi song from thirudA thirudA reminds me of these)....
To walk on the thin vayal varappu barefeet feeling the fresh dewdrops and hoping you wouldn't slip and fall into the muddy fields...
And, to recapture all the simple pleasures of the less materialistic India I grew up in--an India which is long gone but exists evergreen in my memories even now....

Hi All,
I have been following all the threads and the responses posted for quite some time now. I have not posted any response so far as i feel i do not know enough to comment on music. After reading your responses to this thread i was overcome with such a nostalgic feeling that it forced me to respond. It feels great to see some of my favourite songs (mostly oldies, mostly IR music)being referred to in your threads. Keep up the great work all of you. I will continue to read all your responses. BTW my chinna aasai is to go back in time to the college days while listening to favourite songs while travelling in private town buses really made your day!! I am sure all the trichy people out there will understand....
CM: Many a time i too have wanted to sing "sorgame Endrallum..."
Kanchana: If you do become successful in recapturing the simple pleasures of the less materialistic India ...please share the secret with all of us.:-)

Let me share some of my aasai.
Thanni vidada , appadhan Karanda Mattu Paalla Filter coffee kudikkanum.

Some times i think, just because we experienced it for a particular period in our life, we relish it so much. Anda vayasula most of us would have thought seekiram velayku varanum and other things.
Another important point i think which made/make our memories so sweet is that not only were the quality of the songs excellent and melodious, but
they were never forced on us like it happens nowadays. Nowadays you turn to every channel, film music is there in some formor other.
In our days, we had to wait in front of a TV for oliyum oliyum or sit with a radio just wishing that the guy will broadcast one of our favourite songs. This waiting made the experience doubly sweeter.( Sakkarai Pandalil Then Mazhai pozhinda madiri !!)
i think already i have taken too much of your time.
Vishali: Feel free to write and you will learn a lot about music here.
