Rahman sells more than Madonna and Britney
02nd Aug 2002 11.20 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Latest estimates of UK-based paper ‘The News of the World’ puts music wizard A.R.Rahman among the highest selling musicians in the world.
Rahman is said to have sold a mind-boggling 200 million albums worldwide, a figure that surpasses the collective sales of albums by pop stars Madonna and Britney Spears.
According to the estimate Madonna’s albums sold 130 million copies while Britney ranked low with 20 million copies. That puts Rahman’s album sales 50 million more than album sales of Madonna and Britney collectively.
Yet, it is surprising that in spite of such whopping sales Rahman is not in Billboard top ten list. Reason? Explains Andrew Lloyd Webber (producer of hit play ‘Bombay Dreams’) that there is probably “no proper mechanism to log the sales of Rahman’s albums in US and UK”.

Kangalal Kaithi sei :
A.R.Rahman 's music is mind blowing and all 6 songs are a super hit.

(Barathiraja Speech is also a hit?)
-as for Malaysia, the audio aint a HIT,Malaysia is still under the magic of U20E18 & BOys,the audio is topping for months - BOYS)

You cant compare rahman to britney and madonna bec its more common europe and north america to download illegally on internet these days, in india people dont have internet in many homes. In india they sell mostly cassettes and in europe its cds. The competition is heavier outside india. I bet ir would have sold more than 200 millions if he started his career in the 90's

Music is life,
Ramarajan and Mohan had great support from IR's music i am not denying.
You can remember a few musical hits for ramarajn like paturkaran, karakattakaran, namma oru nayakan and a few more.
But All the 40 odd movies Ramarajan acted didn't have great songs may be 1 or 2 songs in his films were good.
IR always gave his best to Maniratnam and Kamal, his music was never patchy with these guys and to most extent he gave a similar output to KB and Baratiraja.
Just to show a few inconsistencies
for Rv udayakumar - Kamal - he gives a great Singaravelen, but for RV udayakumar without kamal he comes up with ordinary stuff like ponnumani, How good was the music of Rajakumaran- prabu's 100th movie under Sivaji productions directed by RV Ud?
For P vasu he gives a superb Chinna thambi and a few years later he comes up with a mediocre stuff for Vasu in Uzaipalli.
If you go for a introspection like this you will find more inconsistencies, anyway thats a big research topic.
If you're an IR fan you'd know these facts then why do you bark at me? ;)

illayaraja fan,
Yes the competition is tougher outside India but the market is much wider, ARR is not making English albums, he makes only hindi and Tamil albums which have limited audiences agaisnt global english audience, a chinese guy living in singapore or Malaysia doesn't care to buy a rahman album - cos its either Hindi or Tamil whist he buys Britney, MJ, BSBoys and Maddona.
English pop gives them more international appeal in all countries among the youth, remember BSB launched their Millenium Album in 5 continents in a span of just 40 hours.
Rahman isn't going that global yet and what ARR has achieved still is considered monumental.

"He is a genius in hiding behind all big names to come out successful than working with small time players to prove his worth"
HA HA HA..joke of the year...sorry sorry of teh century....may be...
when he did GENTLEMAN..Shankar's maiden movie, with Arjun (was never no.1 hero)...and Madhubala (intro in this movie)..and KT Kunjumon as a producer...that movie really went superbly in BOX OFFICE...now was Shankar a big director then? was Arjun as hot as Rajni or Kamal? in fact KT Kunjumon's name got boosted after this movie my dear....
wake up...

rajasaranam...in that same frequency...
KV had superb "Yenthan Vaanil", "Sonnalum", "O kaaadhale"
Parasuram had "Muppathe nimidam", "kathal vettukil"
Baba had "Shakti kodu"
Uthaya had "uthaya uthaya"
PP had "Nee than yen desiye geetham"
so the conclusion is what is "music" to ur ears may no be "music to us, and vice versa......got it...?

Paran,
That was not a joke but a fact.
If u happen to look at Gentleman it was during ARR's Earlier days of his career when he did movies like puthiya mugam, pavithra, vandicholai chinnaraasu, puthiya mannargal, uzhavan etc., for those small time players. but when he shot up to fame he stopped doing this cos he understood without proper campaign, marketing and advertising his music r not getting noticed ro sold weel. even in case of 'gentleman' the advertisemant Campaign was very huge.
nowadays he wont even dare to do music for a small company or aspiring new director.
ARR was the first in Indian to make music into a saleable commodity [ dont ask me werent cassetes being sold before that. yes they were but not to this extent of making it into a total commodity] and we lost the art known as 'music'.
as of now u tend to look at sales figure and the way it is marketed and judge the quality. even Patriotism was made into a saleable commodity after ARR.
dont worry u live ur life,
unfortunately we r oldtimers who still believe music as pure art form and its implications on our heart and soul not ur stupid statistical figures.

Paran,
the songs which i mentioned were total hits within the Tamil masses and the songs ur mentioning r good to listen for u and likes of u. of the list u provided i liked 'nee thaan en desiya geetham' but not the whole lot of tamil masses.

when u got the option to hear ur so called ART music,u can alwz play ur Ilairaja's cd,or mabby record for ur timers,y must u butt into any ARR threads & proof ur right?u got the option to hear which song u want,so listen to ur ilairajas songs,y coming in here?i mean, look at u,lifeless guy, cannot take it that ARR have done more what Illairaja archived(except Ilai have done more then 800 album)...

lol dinesh,
i thought this thread was abt 'ARROKARRA' Rajni's nxt movie:::---)))ROTFL. I know iam a Lifeless guy if IR's music is not there:-) my life time is getting lower only bcos of the ARR's stupid songs i happen to listen as an accident. else ill live longer listening to IR's songs :-)
yes i know that IR had 'archived' more songs than ARR for us to keep listening.

rajasranam....
he eh eheh it's a bit bias isn't it..i mean ur statement...
simply because..when u wanted to downgrade ARR u say..the album didn't sell at all...but then now..u claim Sales Figure is not the judging point...i too agree with u..it is not...that is why i said...i liked all the songs i listed....eventhough they were not hot cakes...
anyway..working with Small Timers or Small Banners do u think IR is delivering it nowadays...just look at En Mana Vaanil, Dhanush and Konji Pesalam....some of them don't even know these albums exists!...so same is teh case with ARR..
he doesn't take the risk...especially in TFM....but he takes his risk Globally...
for eg...BD...that was a Millions of Pounds of risk there, WOHE...that was a some million in YEN of risks...and now BD in Broadway...also millions of Dollars of risk...now stop claiming he doesn't take the risk with newcomer...
i mean just say that u have a fast food restaurant...after going globally will u be selling Murukku and Seedai in ur centre, unless u commercialize it...
and last but not least IR is also doing music for money just like ARR...if IR is not doing it for money and only for pleasure he could have easily funded his own Thirukural in Symphony...alright...
all of them are businessmen...just that ARR is better businessman..that's all

Sony corporation and Weber r small timers and new comers with whom ARR took a great risk and made them famous....hmmm thx for the info.
and a song becoming a hit need not be equalized with sales figures 'elangaathu veesudhu' reached more than Boys and sales wise it was viceversa.
sethu, kaasi, bharathi and azhagi are few examples for u to understand that IR delivers well for small banners too.KP,EMV were badly made movies while the musical content was good enough for us. the point i want to make is ARR doesnt take risks nowadays while IR had been true to music and nothing else all along his career.
And thats not 'thirukural in Symphony' but 'Thiruvaasagam in Symphony' for which he expects his fans to fund him not any big Corporations like sony etc.,
I agree to the point that ARR is the best businessman here. while IR is the best musician here.

rajasaranam....u still don't get the point...in the case of Sony and ALW...ARR IS THE SMALL TIMER....he takes the risk...and doesn't bring disrepute to the BIG TIMERS...why u can't the whole picture?
Eelangathu Veesuthe reached more than BOYS?...how?..based on the sales?..or based on the number of times it is played over the radio? by both mean BOYS albums did better my friend..
nevertheless...PM, Azhagi, Bharathi, Sethu and VM are truly magical from IR...i never denied that...
but in between even ur genius had to give flops rite?...
but when ARR did...then why big fuss?...
ooh in IR's case the movie was done badly...
same goes in terms of Parasuram...but none of u..spoke abt the bad movie...all u ever said that ARR flopped again..he can't even produce a good music anymore...but for US(HCARRF) that music for that movie is good enough...
so to settle the matter all i am saying is that...
IR is genius to u (as well as for me, personally)
and ARR is genius for us HCARRF, (defintely more than IR for ME)...
so u enjoy ur MD's serving...while we do with ours...why need to disgrace other to glorify the other?
