TFM DFers,
I plan to be in Madras this winter, and will be carrying a huge list of songs that I have compiled from inputs of all of you fellow TFM DFers. I am interested to know which are the really good places in Madras where I can get quality recording done. I would also request you people to suggest me the best quality of media, other than CDs, what make and type of tape that I should use for quality recording.
Your inputs are surely welcome. Also, if anyone wants me to make any specific recordings, you are welcome to email me. I will make sure that I will get them done.

Guys:
I am not trying to rub it in. I have been a regular customer of "Esquire Musicals" in Vepery/Purasawakkam for about 14 years. They have been extremely good to me. They are more like friends to me. They have given me some of the privileges that it won't be possible to even dream about from others.
The same store, when I went this time, told me they can not do any dubbing of any sorts, NEW songs, OLD songs, very OLD songs, devotional songs, inspirational songs, private albums, even LEONI patti manrams, S.V. Shekar comedy, NOTHING regardless of language, type etc. In fact, they have completely removed all the stereo equipment( they have had some sophisticated piece of equipments ) and filled that area with racks to carry CDs and audio cassettes. They do have one system to play the cassettes/CDs for the potential customers to buy - T H A T ' S I T!
It is a big dent in their business but they have no other go. They are the ones who told me the story behind all this. When I asked them, if all these would ever change; they said "Not for a while". Then again, things could quickly change in our culture/country. By the time, you go, things could become "Business as Usual".
I also checked with a few other stores in Purasawakkam, T.Nagar, Anna Nagar, Aminjikkarai and Nungambakkam - none of them would dare touch "dubbing" with ten-foot pole. People are not just scared about these Karate Gang, they are also worried about police, losing license, etc. Word-of-mouth in this business at this time is deemed dangerous.
It was a big loss for me. I usually get about 30 to 40 empty 90-minute cassettes filled with songs from old/new/variety songs in addition to several original audio cassettes/CDs that I buy. This time, all the empty cassettes that I have taken for this purpose, I have handed over to my nephews/neices( they use it for dubbing songs from Western albums, new movies, Indian Pop albums with their friend's stereo systems at homes ). I ended up buying quite a few original audio cassettes and CDs.
This is the true story. Good Luck to you and if you do find a store that does dubbing/recording, please let me know and I can ask my family record songs for me and send to USA.
Raj Video Vision in Mount Road, did some video dubbing of old movies and songs. They have never done audio dubbing and they wouldn't do it now.

Ravi:
Thanks ! If I remember right, Udhaya once offered to categorize and clean up the archives. Perhaps that might be worth looking into too.
Amar:
Though your news must have been disheartening to most, we must also take some heart in the fact that these things only point to a better future for all businesses in India. Piracy in any industry is wrong. Manasula konjam bhayam...illa...mathavanga uzhaippukku mariyadhai irundha athula thappeillai ! This could even turn out to be to the consumer's best interests ! Cassette sales are going to decrease whenever poor albums come out. Guys like us will buy one cassette (maybe even share the cost !) and record the best songs out of that at home ! Karate Hussain dare not step into my house ! Audio shops are going to feel the brunt and they'll stop retailing cassettes that are not good. This will ultimately reflect on the producers of these albums and the onus will shift right back to the MDs ! We can expect better music from them. Even if not necessarily better, we can atleast expect more professionalism from them. No longer will cassette sales be decided by the MD or the movie or the singer. I know all this sounds like an Utopian Dream. But it has to start somewhere. Let's just consider this a pillayaar suzhi for better business ethics in India !

Prakash,
Srinath is right. Recording songs onto customer's tapes without paying royalty to the band/music troupe is gross violation of copyrights. Believe me this is a good thing. I am very very happy with this news. Thanks Amar. If you like music you should buy copyrighted cassettes. If you dont like the quality buy the CDs. My brother who lives in Chennai tells me that CD prices have fallen (Rs250-300) T-Series CDs are even lesser. The govt has recently reduced taxes on polycarbonate (this is what the CD is made from) so that should reduce the cost of CD as well.
If movie producers can make money on CDs/Cassettes then they can afford to pay more to MDs. MD salaries are a major part of moview production cost. If audio sales are high MDs might even be tempted to produce albums on their own. Surprise..surprise ..this is how the rest of the world works. If this situation arises MDs will be forced to produce quality work. Not to mention so many other artisted trying to come out with their own album.
I see a glorious future for the music industry in India. I hope taxes on audio systems also get reduced in the long run.
Being in the software industry I realise and understand how intellectual property rights work. My friend left the software industry to study law in Stanford. He is going to specialise in Intellectual Property.

Last month, in July , I have recorded a lot of old & new songs atMadurai (stereo & CDrecording). I am not sure whether the above said things are happening only at Chennai or everywhere in Tamil Nadu. Please check it up. If anybody wants to do it at Madurai, please let me know, if u wish. I will be going over there in the end of September.Recording quality is O.K as far as stereo is concerned.

Why am I being forced to buy 'muthu kuLikka vAreegaLa?' when I only need avatharam ?
Why is 'conductor mAplE' being forced down my throat when I need only 'veera thAlAttu?'
Some other stupid movie with 'kizhakkum mERkum' - I don't even know the name of that movie !
Where else am I going to get IR's 70s songs? IR's songs before Echo are no longer available on pre-recorded cassettes. Can you find annakkiLi, priyA etc on original pre-recorded cassettes ?
And these were mega hits. Forget about non-hits like EVK. The only way to get these songs is through a recording shop.

neenga sollarathu romba nyayama thaan irukku. MDs should get the royalty, fine. We here in TFM have come up with so many great combinations. Why don't we give them to cassette companies, and let them come out with these combos. I am sure these cassettes will have some of the all time best sales for these companies. That way the companies, MDs and all the relevant people will get their royalties or "uzhaippukku thaguntha mariyadhai" as you had said earlier.
