just a suggestion :
poothirukkum manamE sung by hariharan and Umaramanan in the film puthayal has some excellent Abheri shades.
ManasukkuLLE oh nanda laala in Devaraj sung by Unni and some female singer has maduvanthi saayal

poothirukkum vaname is indeed abheri. It has been discussed a few times in this thread. But I think "kannodu kaanbathellaam" is a better abheri, comparatively speaking.

The song "Thendral Vanthu ennai thodum.." is in the
raga "Hamsanaadham" and it is probably the only
song in Hamsanaadham to start with a Ma.

irukkaangaLE, paakkalayaa? It is in Mohanam. In the
first line of this song, I have always wondered
about its closesness to bansaayee kaadhal

Mohanam).

Rajaraman, I believe chinese and also japanese music relies on pentatonic melodies to a large extent. I remember the hindi film song 'sayonara sayonara' from the film 'Love in Tokyo' which is based on Mohanam.

It's long since I heard these two songs. The sound like pentatonic scales, but I'm not sure they are mohanam based. Probably others (palani ?) can confirm.

Hi,
Rajaram: They are Mohanam based. I could sing it out and was able to extract Mohanam swaras out of it.
BTW, I heard "vanthadhu vanthadhu nenjinil nidradhu" yesterday. It is Bageshree. Also "sivakami nenappinile" from the same movie "kiLipEchu ketka vaa" is MMgowla.

did you note the glaring omission of ni in the 'sivakami nenappinile' ? I will confirm this also once I check with my kbd.

pal,
"minnal oru kodi" is not sivaranjini.....there is the absence of the "ga" as in bhairavi....
also, the lines "mounam pesiyadey.." show the presence of "ma"....

Hi, I've got some queries, I create some shows on Sunrise Radio in London, UK called Raaga Pravaham.
1) I've seen a response on the song 'MALARGALE MALARGALE' from the film LOVEBIRDS (MD is ARR), the voilin duo Ganesh-Kumaresh have said that this is in the raagam "POORIYA DHANAASRI". Can anyone confirm this? I guessed that the song was a cross between Saraswathi and Hamir Kalyaani.....
2) I believe ARR had also used the Saraswathi raagam in the song Kaiyil Mithakkum Kanavaa Nee - from Ratchagan.....Please confirm.
3) The song 'NARUMUGAYE' from IRUVAR (Again MD is ARR) was identified as having the ragam "KAMALA MANOHARI". This raagam takes two versions, one with the Melakartha Chala Nata and one with the Mela MMG. Please can someone confirm this. I can see touches of Chalanata in this.
4) The song 'MANAM VIRUMBUTHE' from Nerrukku Nerr - This has the first set of base notes from the popular Thyagarajar Krithi Mana Vyaala Kim in Nalinakaanthi (Same ragam as the song 'Enthan Nenjil Neengaatha Thendra Nee Thaana - from Kalaignan - MD is IR). BUT, the immediate execption is the presence of the Rishabam (Nalainakaanthi has it, this song doesn't), hinting KAMBEERA NATAI. The overall song has the KEDHARAM touch (This ragam was popularised by the famous IR song from Nilzalgal - Pon Maalai Polzhuthu). Can someone correctly identify it's ragam please?
5) The song 'Vaasakhi' from the film Arasiyal (MD is Vidhyaasagar) is in the ragam SRI RANJANI. I read a review which pointed that this had hints of Aboghi with touches of Bhagayashree.... (Sri Ranjani is Karaharapriya without the Panchamam, Aboghi is Sri Ranjani without the Thayvatham, Bhagayashree has the same structure as Sri Ranjani, but has different paryogams). I cannot hear the Panchamam in this song, but I can hear the Thayvatham, hence, I think it's in Sri Ranjani (There are a few IR compositions in this ragam {remember 'Naatham Elunthathadi' - Gopura Vaasal} and many other film songs in this - 'Enakka Theriyaathu Sri Ranjani' from Jaadhi Malli, 'Naatham Ennum Koyilile'. As discussed before , Bagayashree is also popular. Please confirm.....Also, there is a song in the film Sornamughi - MD is Newcomer Swararaj which has a Bhagayashree touch at the alapana stage and continues in Sri ranjani....
Please confirm this too.
6) The song 'Vaarai En Tholiye' also from Arasiyal sounds like it's the ragam 'DHANI' - The Hindustaani version of Suddha Dhanyaasi /Uthayaravichandrika. Or is in in Bhimplass - similar to Abheri (Poothirukkum Manane - PUTHAYAL, Kannodu - JEANS, Shabba Shabba - OTTAM, and to add a bit of spice, Thriller by Michael Jackson......)
7) The song 'SIVASHANKARI SIVAANANTHA LAHARI' sung by Seergaali G - not sure of the film.....This was said by some one in this forum to be in Dharbaari Kaanada, but judging from the swarams, I would say that it is in the raagam ADANA (Hindustaani raagam)- NOT ATANA (Varuhiraar Ennai Thedi in Salangai Oli). Please can someone confirm this.
8) What raagam would you say 'KANNAALANE' from Bombay (again an ARR composition) is in? It has the Dharbaari Kaanada touch too.
9) The song 'En Kaadhal Nerrupe pattri kolla vaa vaa' form the film OTTAM (MD is ARR) sounds like Dharmavathi, is this correct? Also, Minnal Oru Kodi from VIP takes the Melakartha Dharmavathi, but isn't pure Dharmavathi....as said before, it's not Siva Ranjani, could it be Sumaneesa Ranjani? - a similar ragam to Madhuvanthi - There is one Purandaradasar Krithi, often sung by Raajkumar Barathi called Hanumana Mathave in this ragam
10) Last one for the time being, 'Porul Thedum' from the film KALKI (MD is Deva).....Is this in Karuna Ranjani?
By the way, this forum is really cool, I've just discovered it and am getting addicted, especially the Jeans one.....It's great to be able to share interests with people from around the world who have great knowledge.....
Thank You, Geetha.

Geetha,
1.Even I felt that MALARGALEY MALRGALEY was in Saraswathi..
2.Kaiyil Midhakkum Kanavaa NEE starts with Saraswathi, has sivaranjini in the middle, and ends with Hamir kalyani.
3.Manam Virumbuthey is in Gamberanaattai.S G M P N S...has no Rishabam.
4.Narumugayey Narumugayey is in Gambira Naattai.
