Compare and Contrast IR's musical style(s), especially with the BGM tracks, with those of composers of Hollywood, viz., Maurice Jarre, Henri Mancini, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernstein, John Barry, Alan Sylvistri, Danny Elfman, Ennio Morricone, Howard Shore, Hans Zimmer, James Horner and so on

"Last of the Mohicans" - this movie had an OK score
I am saying 'Ok' when I compare it with some scores of IR
btw, let us look at the interludes of IR's movie songs, some of which are grand in evoking wide landscapes :
1. the 2nd interlude of "valai osai" after the SPB-LM rendering a short melody
2.the 2nd interlude of "andhi mazhai" after the short quick piano piece
3. the 2nd interlude of "thai maavin thanalil"
all these are hard-core WC based scores, interlaced with subtle Indian classical glissandos (which can not be noticed at the outset easily) that would have been ideal for movies like "Bridges of Madison County", the green exotic vastness in some scenes from "The Last Samurai" and many other movies
can others come up with examples of interludes of IR songs that if developed could fit in situations such as above ?

Dear 'Om Muruga'(SSSSA) - one favor pls - next time you meet IR, can you kindly inform him about this thread and the kind of discussion that has been started ? I am sure he would appreciate it - you may also request him to visit this thread often

OSHO, i will try in the near future to place the prelude of Ilamai Idho Idho (SKV Khaasan movie) copied "ditto" by Gavin Greenway for a Millenium celebration composition for Walt Disney! Give me some time. In fact, the composition has some Tamil voices, I think, in the background. Who knows, it could be a tribute. By the by, GGreenway also works with Hans Zimmerman and Danny Elfman ( a research on the web told me that.)
MIB I theme is definitely IR style. Hey, IR can actually outsource one interlude at a time and its variation for one Hollywood film at a time. Let the orchestrate and pay the royalties from the soundtrack. IR does not even have to be in Hollywood!

A nice discussion after ages.Keep it up.
I too have a feeling that in many of IR's melodies, esp the second interludes get elaborate, rich treatment, like a mini theme and music_lover has aptly pointed out few of them.
I would like to add 3 songs which I can immediately recollect, where the second interlude paints a landscape canvas
a. Anandaraagam ketkum kaalam - Paneer Pushpangal
b. Roja onru mutham ketkum neram - Komberimookan
c. Ennathil yedo jil enradhu - kallukul eeram

add this song to the above list as well :
(i)the latter part of the first interlude and the beginning portion of the 2nd interlude of "Allithhandha bhoomi" from Nandu - it really gives me the image of a misty afternoon through the woods with winds rustling through the fallen leaves!
(ii)the entire song "kanavil midhakkum" - these two words aptly describe the feeling that the song invokes in me - most complex layered strings passage in the interludes -
this one song brings to my soul one of the following, each time i listen to it : (i) a Victorian age painting with a bit of Van Goghian countryside like creativity thrown in, (ii) the Virginia or Pittsburg countryside during spring, (iii)mist clad Yercaud, or Kutrallam and I can go on -
the visual imagery that IR's music conveys with it is beyond my capability of description/ articulate speech!

One of the best prelude and interlude by Raja is "PuthamPuthu Kalai Ponira Velai" from Alaigal oyvathilai flim (This song didnt appear in the flim)

Friends, I have just uploaded the title score of "Goodwill Hunting" by Danny Elfman - the score that over and over again reminds me of IR's style - here is the link, I would appreciate if you all can listen to it and then share your comments

Music lover,
I actually started a thread with title as "evolution of interlude music in TFM" with a special request for discussion on IR's mesmerizing interludes ( perhaps the best ever one can ever produce in the history of mankind), unfortunately the thread didn't even receive any attention with zero posts, any ways , hopefully this thread survives little longer and again a request for other TFM Dfers , please give more interesting / eloborate findings /associations with the way IR has given those innumerable haunting interludes way ahead of anybody's thinking.
MIB and Goodwill Hunting themes for sure are very IR..ish ( not Irish), I have the " Enga thambi" opening (title) score ripped from recent SUN TV telecast, I will host it in coolgoose tomorrow.
I remember one of my room mate's friend ( from HYderabad) mentioning about IR's interludes itself being the greatest source for improvisations and if some clever musicians wanted could turn them into zillions of greatest melodies, for that matter even IR or his kids themselves. The whole discussion came soon after we came out watching " shiva" telugu movie, the first RG verma movie with some pathbreaking BGM score ever by IR, we were casually talking about ARR's Roja which was just then released and the hype around the same with references about Roja being a sure national award winner ( it did turn out that way) then this friend of ours started with discussions which I mentioned above and apparently with even only from the interlude music from IR's past movies , IR could just come out with another 600 or 700 movies with great melodies ( personally IR has continued to give several fantastic songs since then, it is the way the general taste which has changed (sort of secular trend) in the way film music is perceived with time is probably where people always have questioned about IR's recent commercial success).
On the same note, IR has used some of the great BGM clips as the tunes for some songs ex:
"Swathimuthyam"'s 2 bgm peices ( Raadhika's theme as a song in "Sri kanakamahalakshmi dancing troupe) and Kamal's theme looking for a job in the same movie used later in "unakkagave vaazhgiren" song "vera velai venuma" there may be more such incidences,
Another observation I have made in some songs how IR's interludes take a total deviation from the main prelude and pallavis, or taking a deviation from interludes to charanam, I don't know if my observation is right or wrong, for ex: "Vennilavukku vaanathai" from one of the Parthiban's movie, any comments....?
For people who listen to " Smooth Jazz" music I don't know how many of you have noticed how well IR's great interludes, themes, bgm peices can be turned out to be some of the gretest " smooth jazz" compositions ( "Smooth jazz" referred
by some as contemporary jazz, a softer, more RnB leaning element of contemporary instrumental music,The music that the word Smooth encapsulates: it doesnt have edge, depth or undercurrent..it's just pleasantly unobtrusive. Smooth jazz is very mood oriented rather than song oriented, you don't hear a lot of strong or catchy melody lines, it's mostly more of an ongoing groove with solos fading in and out but not in an attention grabbing way)
"Smooth Jazz" by Dave Koz, Boney james, Brian Culbertson, Larry Coryelle, Jeff Golub, Kim waters are a few you can listen....

Dear Music_Lover,
Unfortunately IIR is not a frequent net-surfer and as such I am afraid that unless somebody brings it to his attention,he may never know abiut this! But, i have already started printing these pages and will definitely hand them over to him when he comes to US on the 17th of this month.
p.s. That was another reason why I requested to keep this thread pure and to the topic, so that I dont have to edit them!!
Thank you!

Dear Prabhudas - thanks a lot for the 'enga thambi' title score - awaiting the upload - it is great to see more and more chipping in with their details - I have some serious discussion points - let us keep this thread alive and kicking -
perceptions of pleasure derived from music is not a simple pavlovian stimulus phenomenon nor any kind of 'response to stimuli' phenomena - the kind of universal appeal that we all seem to have for IR's scintillating scores is reflective of the deeper influence of highly evolved sensory perception that is a synthesis of cultural and if I may call it, 'karmic' backgrounds, that is perhaps common to all of us fans, at least from a musical perspective
SSSA(aka Om Muruga) - thanks for at least bringing this thread to the notice of IR - can you do another favor - if possible, request IR to do an album or two with singers like Lara Fabian, Ben Harper - the outocme will be a great experience for all of us - just listen to Lara's "Dream within" - I wonder what IR can come up with to capitalise on such a wonderful voice!

I would think IR is past collaborations, but Karthik Raja has greater energies, exceptional talent and a more contemporary sound. But, I always felt that Indian film music was definitely deeper and tougher than any musical form I've come across, so it should be a question of time before we see many artistes from elsewhere lookin for collaborations within India. I heard Richard Clayderman has joined some Hindi composers recently.
I think the Maestro is interested for the sake of his many fans, because of their support, and their compulsion that he in putting that effort and making it known to the world, "it is time you people really took to Indian composers to find a source of peace and wonder within and amongst yourself." I think that is how IR at his age, taking so much interest on the Symphonies and other works, because IRs fans, like us, are there to help others appreciate not just the beauty but also the purpose of deeper musical expressions.
It will be great if Karthik Raja entered into collorabartion and for this reason, I greatly admire the TENACITY of Rahman. He is doing his bit for Indian music, IR is doing his bit for his fans' sake. Right now, I have a feeling IR must be lookin for a real break from Symphony and every huge things expected from his genius!
