  To hear what SPB brings to a song just listen to "Idhayam Oru Koyil" IR's rendering and immediately follow it up with SPB. Balu just hoists the song high up there and lets it dance like a kite rescued from a tree and given to the winds. Every line and stanza break is fluid. BTW let me wave my white flag, mine is not a muckracking intent.

  Karthick: Hariharan didn't sing Kadhal Rojave....It was sung by SPB only(there were two versions on the CD/Cassette - I have both, by Pyramid)....unless the version of Roja we got in the UK was different from yours. The only song Hari sang in the film Roja was Thamila Thamila.

  My impressions of Pottu Vaitha oru vatta nila is that no doubt KJY has sung it good. It is IR that brings the feelings from the song. Only the composer knows what an effect the song need to have. Who else can give its feelings better than the MD. IR's voice cannot be compared to professional singers like Balu or Jesu. But in certain songs only IR's voice brings the soothing feeling.
  Sorry guys anything negative about the Maestro cannot be digested by me. Has anyone heard the song from "Vidhinja Kalyanam" IR sings a beauty of a song called "Kaalam Mazhai kaalam Thano". This is followed by SJ. But I found IR's voice more suited to the scene. Similar instance is from "Unnai Naan Santhithen".

  It was UnniMenon who sang "Kaadal Rojave" in ROJA, and it is not SPB as you think.

  my intent was not to mock IR. I will give up even my life for his music.. I am such a big fan of his! Even now I am listening to his songs on the net while working...!
  
  my point was that after hearing KJ's voice for pottu vaitha oru vatta nila, I found it odd to listen to the same song sung by IR.

  Another song from Udaya geetham."ThEnE then pAndi meenE" by SJ and SPB. I prefer SJ's version.
  
  Eppadi makkal, "ennai thAlAtta varuvAlA" songai
  vittu vittargal. I prefer IR version.
  
  I also prefer the IR version of "idhayam oru kovil" from idhaya kovil.

  No heart feelings. I know how much his music has captivated and still lingers in our minds. I was just explaining the MD's voice.
  
  Folks, Idayam oru kovil (IR's version) is superb since, the music interludes is out of the world. The violin pieces in the end is amazing. I just listened to the CD. My god where can he come up with such a great stuff time and again.

  Here's one more example :
  In the film "En Jeevan Padudhu", there is a song
  "Engirindho Azhaikkum" that is sung by Lata Mangeshkar, and later in the film by Ilaiyaraja. The orchestrations are different.
  
  Similarly, in the film "Neengal Kettavai", the song "Pillai Nila" is sung once by S. Janaki, and later by K. J. Yesudas, both with different orchestrations.
  
  The song "Thalattu Mari Ponadhe" from "Unnai Nan Sandhithen" also has two versions - one by S. Janaki, and another by Ilaiyaraja.
  
  From "Unakkagave Vazhgiren" - "Ilancholai Pookkala", SPB and Malaysia Vasudevan.
  
  From "Kavi Kuyil" - "Chinna Kannan Azhaikkiran", Balamurali krishna and S. Janaki.
  
  From Paatu Padava" - "Indha Kanmanikkule", Sunanda and SPB.

  I prefer SJ's version of thene thenpandi meene like most do.But like SJ's version of Chinna kannan azhaikiran unlike most do.
  
  But I really enjoy her version of Pillai nila and Thalathu mAriponathe.
  
  Another song is Vasamtham padivara in Rayil payananggal by SJ and SPB. I prefer both coz but with its own beauty.
  
  A song from Sudarum Sooravaliyum but I can't recall but I like definitely SPB's version coz on the another TMS sings!

  There is a song "vasanthamE arugil vaa" in the movie "amaran" which was sung by both KJY and SPB. Donno which one featured in the movie itself.

  The song you are thinking of is "Thiruthaeril varum silaiyo" from "Naan Vaazhavaippaen". Both TMS and SPB recorded the song. But IR chose to use SPB's version which totally ticked off TMS who publicly demanded a comparison of both versions to see whose was better. IR just dumped him without entertaining his ego. I believe IR's decision could have been based on the English lines in the song. If one regrets English in songs then hearing TMS sing in English is a double-edged punishment.

  The song "chandirarae sooriyarae natchathira naayagarae" from Amaran was the one that was sung by both KJY and SPB. Both were excellent in their own right. KJY's version may have been the sad version though the difference is hard to tell in this somber tune.

  Another example is "Dharma".IR starts singing the song "Iru Kangal Podhadhu" and luckily stops after two lines!SPB sings the full song.

  Udhaya. Donno, maybe you are right, but I seem to remember the song "vasanthamE" as being the first song on both sides in the cassette. Will try to acquire the cassette somehow.
  
  Nirupama : What Udhaya says is right. There probably can't be a debate asto whether it was SPB or KJY who sang the song "better". Both are great singers and both have the right kind of emotion in their voices, especially for sad songs 'cos I have a feeling that SPB puts in a lot more enthu than KJY for dappaangguththu kind of songs. Of 'course when the song has to be happy but sober KJY will be better (for ex. "aaj sE pehlE aaj sE zyaadaa" in the film "chit chOr" sorry for going into Hindi films)

  You're right in saying that both these singers are excellent in their own right and cannot be compared. Since I never had the opportunity of listening to them delivering the same song, I thought it will be interesting to note the differences in the style of singing, voice modulation etc. I guess this is not the right song then, because I'm looking for a song that was sung by both of them for the same situation/mood.

  Maasi maasam aalaana ponnu from dharmadurai (KJY) was done by Balu when it was dubbed in telugu.
  I felt KJYs version was better probably bocos balu's version was in telugu!!!

  film: enakkul oruvan song: megham kottattum aattam undu....both kamal and SPB sang for it, but it's the kamal version on the movie, i guess same with "raaja kaiya vachaa..." from apporva sagodharargal..correct me if i am wrong.

  btw, kaarthik should be thinking about hindi version of roja. both SPB and HH have sung for "kaadhal rojavae". IMO, both are a class apart. SPB has just replicated what he's done in tamil version. HH has done a lot of modification, his "venkala" voice has a more soothing effect than SPBs...got to agree!

  Ever listened to Devan thantha veenai sung by SPB and KJY ? SPB is absolutely tops whereas KJYs rendition is just normal. KJY unlike SPB is not able to beautify a tune and render it and unfortunately the range of songs he do justice for is very limited.
