thanks a million times for uploading some of excellent songs of the century. IMO, M K Thyagaraja Bhagawatar is the best playback singer of all times till now. What an unparalleled voice he had ! All of my favorite singers come only second after him, not even SPB! I just loved those numbers

1) amba manam kaNinthu unanthu kadai kaN pAr(the best on any day, excellent start with jalatharangam)

2) gNAna kaN ondRu irunthidum pOthinile oona kaN izhanthathal ulagil kuRaiyum undo(outstanding expression)

I like this song, because it expresses two contradictory feelings.
For example
LRE: Illaram Kaettal Thuravaram Kaetukum Idhayamae Mari Vidu(request)
TMS: Idhu Oottai Veedu Onbadhu Vasal Idharkkullae Aasai Enna(denial with a reason)

I guess it is written by Kannadhasan.

idhu mAlai nEraththu mayakkam is one of my favorites. It blends very nicely Asai and virakti into one song. I think you can catch shades of each emotion in the voices of LRE and TMS respectivley. Listen to the subtlety of the lyrics.

SK is right, MD is TRP.

BTW, one of the reasons for the decline of AMR, the MD was in his insistence at being the male voice for any duets sung by Jikki. This also contributed to the irritation caused to the other then existing MDs.
This matter was discussed at a two-hour programme on the end-of-millenium review of TFM on Radio Malaysia last night.

I think its from the sivaji&prabhu starrer sangili , one of those late 70's flops of sivaji.

AIR used to play a song "aaNdukku aaNdu thaethikku thaedi ..."(sung by SG) from a movie called subha dhinam consistently for every new year in those days.

After 'sakala kala vallavan', Srilankan Radio used to play "iLamai itho itho .." almost on all their new year programs on Jan 1st .

rameshb: yep, it is from Sangili. That was Prabhus first film; remake of Kaliccharan. Shatrughan Sinha, Pran? played the roles played by Sivaji and Prabhu. Sometimes, I think that after Thirisoolam, Sivaji should hv made just Mudhal Mariyadhai!

_The Hindu_ issue dated 14 Jan 2000 carries an article on TR Sundaram and Modern Stdios by none other than Randor Guy.

I have a query irt RGuy: In late '97 I bought a collection of his essays, previously published in some magazines, under the title: Starlight and Starbright - The early Tamil Cinema 1997_. I am wondering if the next part came out? Well, I had been to India/Chennai again in late '98 and mid-99. Perhaps I missed the 2nd part?!

Books and old films.... reminds me something else
sometime in '96 or '97 The Hindu on-line ed. had published some excerpts from S. Krishnaswamy's (s/o K. Subrahmanyam and co-author of "Indian Film" -with Eric Barnouw) (then) new book. I don't even remember its title. But it contains the word: "Mohonjodaro". I am badly searching for this book since 3+ years. Any leads!

I think "naaLaiya" in this context means "andha naaLaiya". May be I'm wrong.
