A quick question on a song - siru ponmani asaiyum athu sirikkum. Can somebody tell me what tAlam it is etc ? I have a suspicion it has more than one tAlam..(the lyrics kinda hint it). Thanks

Hi Guys
A question for you,How far use of Samples and Sequencs is considered legal or is it also copy.
If it is also a copy then how come people like Hans Zimmer have used lots of sampling in movies like Gladiator? Have anyone of you tried samples

Depends on the sample CD you buy,
If you buy Samples from companies like Illio etc, they cd cover may contain requests, to publish proper credits to the performers., at times royality should be paid. However companies like eastwest give you royality free samples.

Another dumb question?
How do they mix it,direct feeding into the tracks, and cut and paste like that or feed these into thier synth?

Traditionally, you can read samples into sampler synths and use them as instruments. That is why they were called samples - individual notes of instruments.
As synth RAM memories grew, you could load a loop and play it. Many Roland keyboards have loops besides samples.
Nowadays, longer loops are used directly in the audio mixing program like cakewalk or Sonic foundry ACID. In fact, for an year now, (since "Flowing with the river"), I convert my midi tracks into audio loops, enhance them with effects in Sound forge and mix them in Cakewalk express or ACID (recently). My last 4 compositions including Once before, I have not done this loop-effect-mixing, so that sound quality is definitely not as good as the earlier ones.
Recently, I used a tabla loop in "train through
appalachia", it comes as a surprise just when classical violins take over.
Last week, I was pleasantly surprised to hear the the same Tabla loop in ARR's lagaan song-
Chale Chalo. (It comes in the charanam - very subtly mixed for a brief period and vanishes).
***
Chale chalo sounds like "chayya chayya meets pani vizhum malarvanam". The ChalaNattai melodies reminds "Pani vizhum malarvanam" at many places (especially interludes).

Hans Zimmer actually employed London Symphony Orchestra for a week at his home studio and recorded pieces, loops from individual instruments and ensembles and created his own
orchestral library. He uses these extensively on
hardware and software (gigasampler) samplers.
Few years back he also recorded guitar loops and samples from his studio musicians and he sold it as a CD too.
I think Rahman has also build custom sample libraries from musicians in his home studio.
And he uses quite a lot of commercial loop cds, I guess.
For home musicians on a low budget like me, loops give enormous boost in sound quality and instrument real-ness. However, they have two problems: (no variations: I try to overcome this by cutting and rearranging loops) (no originality: everybody uses the loops: so your loop will be found in another composition: to avoid this I have stopped using melodies and chords from loops. Instead first compose, then cut loops and fit to your tune)

Kiru
Siru ponmani asaiyum Thalam is a simple 3-beat
thalam quite common in Raja. (Mounamana neram).
By emphasising the 2 and 3rd beats, he creates an illusion of complexity).

There is a new technology called groove control, it is a mixture of midi events and loops.
It is very hard to create them, it takes more than the loop recording time. After recording the loops a team of programmers work on the groove control. By using groove control, you can control the tempo of the loop without affecting the pitch.
It is achived by sending complex midi data along with the actaul loop to the sampler .Most of the Ilio samples comes with the groove control
Using 3rd party samples is right or wrong -- this depends upon how you define "creativity" within yourself.
Arr has tons of private samples, he uses them very well, most of his samples are left overs , like when an artists plays for a song, he records everything they play, he uses the correct one for the song, since there is nothing known as "wrong ones" here, (after all it is a piece of music that is not related to the currently recorded track.) He uses them as samples when needed in other tracks, Finally working with samples is not easy. To get variations using samples needs hard work.

swamiji, triton can take wav loops, triton can also import akai, but the quality is not as good as the wav. Call me this afternoon, I can help you more.

kk, the beat that comment is referring to is something I have heard in more than one ARR song. But does he have to hear these samples to use it ? I thought it was used by Nagore Haniffa already ??
BTW, Re: Gladiator. You guys are better than some reporters in Audiophile Webzines (soundstage.com). Currently, Gladiator is the audiophile fav. They are speculation how it could have been recorded. I dont think Hans Zimmer is a very original composer. I was not at all impressed by his work in that, because everything piece seemed like I have heard it before. I think plagiarisation is also rampant in Hollywood. For eg. Last of the Mohicans soundtrack was copied/emulated in so many movies (Dont tell me it some standard Irish melody !!)

Aditya,
Good job.
The sounds, reverb and drums are big plus.
Kalyani is often a serious Raga, you have brought out a casual face. Good job,

I was told IR has 300 songs in this rAgam. Is this true ? I have a L Sub CD on Kalyani and it does sound serious. BTW, I was in a chinese restaurant and they were playing popular WCM pieces (I think it was set to Ravel's Bolero) set to rhythm like the one in Aditya's composition (not necessarily the bass and chords which Aditya has done ornamented his compositiion with).

Hi:
Thanks to everybody for appreciating the piece of music composed in Kalyani.
After coming to this DF and knowing guys like Kiru, RJAY, Srikanth, Swamiji, Naveen, UV and others, I have started looking at the sounds, samples, efx etc., before that my focus was only on the Swarakalpana - Manodharma sangeetham. That was primarily because of the Strictly Carnatic Classical Music Background. I acknowledge all of you for being part of my Musical Journey. Thanks guys for being very serious about music.
Regards,
Aditya
