The role of the music director has evolved over the years. In general, the ragas were(and are) chosen for the occasion, then the lyricist gets into action. This has been the case from the beginning until Kannadasan began to dominate. When he felt he needed to be the initiator, he produced his own movie: the result was "Maalayitta Mangai". But it was always interactive. For instance, in the Movie "Paava Mannippu", the famous song "Atthaan Ennathhaan" was written by him in a train station while he was waiting to board a train. But adjustments were made as needed. Kannadasan wrote for lietrature. This last song has only two "Santhams". It is very rare to find such a poem that has two santhams and yet convey full meaning. With Ilayaraja's advent, the MDs became dominant and set the frame-that obviously can have its upsets. "IR versus vairamuthu's" differences.
With Deva and sirpi/ARR-lyrics appear to have lost relevance. SAD

Avanga podura musicla lyrics relevance ezhandhuduchunnu solreengalaa illa avangalae andha paadalgala paaduradhunaala (kathuradhunaala?!!!) lyrics relevance ezhandhuduchunnu solreengalaa?
Some lyrics lose relevance because of the music (or noise?!). Sometimes, inspite of a 'not-so-noisy' music, the lyrics lose relevance because the singer sings as if he doesn't know Thamizh. Eg : Columbus song. Idhul neenga endha vagayai solreenga?

I'll beg to differ with all who lay the blame on Deva/ ARR on deteriorating quality of lyrics. I'd say that their advent brought back Vairamuthu after a long hiatus & he's given several memorable songs in the recent past (indira, iruvar, etc..). Of course, I'm discounting all the pettai rap & kothaval savadi lady kinds.
To a large extent, I believe ARR/VM's soft songs have been far ahead of the lyrics written for IR's recent songs, IMO. Despite IR's knowledge of the language being far better than the others, + being a lyricist himself, I wonder how he manages to tune for all the junk that's written. I can see a distinct improvement in his choice of lyrics recently, though.

I thought that nowadays, the MD gives his tune
first, and then the lyrics are written..
This could be one of the reasons for deterioration
of the poetic quality..

Folks:
I think it is reasonable to say that IR almost single handedly kept Hindi music away from Tamil Nadu. God or bad ? I don't know. But I think he touched upon the innate music cravings of Tamil population with varied interest.. Carnatic, dappangutthu, uncomplicated melodies and some his own style Rocky tunes...The Ceylon radio had done the great job of broadcasting most of his hit songs over and over again in the 80s. My Celonese friends tell me (in those peaceful days of Srilanka) alomst every tamil there were hooked on to his music. When you visit Toronto, visit the tamil music shops..They seem to have the best collection of IR's CDs and the store guy almost could pull out most of IR movie song CDs you wanted..
All India Radio, did not do as much to bring out quickly his hit songs of the 80's..at that time they were mostly broadcasting MSV songs, perhaps with a few of IRs. The vivdhabharathi channel was an exception.. I remember several days that this channel mostly broadcast like the Ceylon Radio, with mostly IR's songs. One of the favorite picks of Vividhabharathi was "Nanoru Ponnoviam Kandaen Yethirae.." It seemed that the producer was hooked on to it!
Anyway, IR has definitely kept people listening more of tamil songs than that of other languages, over most of TN ! There are ofcourse exceptions !
