To bring our healthy/unhealthy discussion on music merits and demeits of IRR and ARR out of the Thangar Bacchaan thread I starting this thread so that it would be more appropriate.
I expect people who post here to be fans and not typical fanatics. Expecially the young ARR fans and the "Theevira" Raja fans
Thanks!

u got me wrong!
I was never "converted" to anti-IR. I am still an IR fan.
But I consider my respect fr ARR to be onenotch higher than that for IR thats it. But I am and I was always an IR fan. Infact in my school light music group we would all strictly perform only IR songs.
Of late there has been too much unfair accusation on ARR so I feel it is my duty to defend him. But I am still an IR fan and please erase your mentality that being an ARR fan automatically disqualifies someone from being an IR-fan. Being an ARR fan is not being anti-IR. Please!!!!

little digression:
I truly admire IR's spiritualism. I feel so happy when he says "yanakku yaarum vendam, yenakku kadavul matrumthan thunai"
Wow what a great man to have such a strong spiritual feeling. I have been to tiruvannamalai so many times and IR visits the Ashram of Ramana Maharshi.
Haha I always wonder how it will be if IR and Kamal touch on spiritual shades on their professions while they are in a joint composing session or something. Kamal is hard core atheist and IR is just the opposite!

wah wah kya baat hain.....someone calls IR a crap then he becomes a immature guy.....but if he calls ARR a crap then he becomes a genius,sound-music knowledged person....... keep it up IR fans and DF guys........u guys got pissed even though i typed IMO b4 calling IR crap........ good tolerance level.......

V, to continue a bit more on your digression, I feel that even ARR is very spiritual. It is great to see a person as successful as ARR saying 'all praises go to God, not me'.
Well, I have heard many people say that music is entwined with spirituality, but looking at IR and ARR, now I surely do believe in that.

Actually you are the one who gets provoked on each and every thing and take it personal, if i might say

big disgression,
V and Dude,
ive always wondered how come many of the great musicians hav been spiritualists. Bach, thyagraja swamigal and IR . ive noticed even many astrophysicts becoming spiritualists in their peak of career. ive come to a conclusion that these people get to a point of no return where they r surrounded by wonder and awe. they ve got questions which no science can answer. ultimately they surender themselves to the bliss they encounter in their profession. this transforms them into great spiritual personalities.
while people like me who r scientifically oriented will say science doesnt hav an answer for this now but it will answer them in their quest. as quoted by karl marx 'there are things which we do not know now but there is nothing that we cannot know'.
while spiritualism transcends them into another universe where everything is good, science takes its own course of finding out the truth. both camps hav given so much for the humanity to reach where we r today. its only the halfbaked people, who r belivers, all over the world who make this planet inhabitable.
music is one area where these two camps meet often. while musicians create music coming out frm their heart, pythogoras will try finding out the structure underlying music and give mathematical equations to create a pleasant music. when a nadaswaram player will get carried away by the music he is playing scientists will try finding out the crests and troughs formed while playing it.
V,
kamal and IR. they understand each other. Manirathnam is also an atheist FYI.
End disgression.

Probably, this has already been discussed, but While we are discussing the merits and demerits of IR and ARR, I would like to bring the topic of usage of different voices by these 2 great MDs.
As far as I know, IR has never experimented with new voices. Whereas ARR has always wanted and sought out new voices in his songs. That is one of the reasons why his songs are so fresh. In this aspect, I think IR has been a trend follower rather than a trend setter. For example, Sadhana Sargam. ARR introduced her in tamil and later on she became IR's favourite singer. There are so many examples like that: unnikrishnan, srinivas, karthik, etc. (please correct me if i am wrong friends)
Most of IR's songs are sung by established singers like SPB, KJ, janaki, chitra, etc. Even in a new movie like Kasi, IR resorted to using Hariharan for all the songs... Why is that? Why so much dependence on one singer? I dont think Hariharan's voice suited Vikram so much that he had to sing all songs. Even Tippu's voice suits vikram very well(veppamaram song in saami).

RS,
Mani ratnam is not an atheist. He just does not believe in rituals like going to temple, celebrating vinayaka chaturthi etc.
My friend once saw him in a temple in adyar with suhasini.
Anyway i dont care what they hold in mind. According to me nobody is athiest or nobody can be athiest.

Dude,
The topic of singers has been discussed at length
before. IR has used a multitude of singers in his time and its just that many of his songs required the skill of SPB and KJY more than anyone. KSC, SJ, PS, VJ, Malaysia Vasudevan, Uma Ramanan, Sujatha, Usha Uthup, Asha Bhosle, Lata, Mano, TVG, Balamuralikrishna, Pattamal, Ajay Chakrabarty, Deepan Chakrabarty, Sailaja, PB Srinivas, Jikki have all sung under his baton. He has always selected singers with regard to situation, pronounciation and suiting to the actor/actress. The combination of SPB+IR is a rare coming together of legends and they have understood this quite well and made full use of it.
However I don't see any relation between this thread and this discussion, as IRs songs are usually very well rendered and not using other singers seems more like a preference rather than demerit.

TVG, Balamuralikrishna, Pattamal??
Wow! I would like to know which songs they sang for IR. I cant wait to hear them.
IR has to be duly credited for the way he exploited KJY's and SPB's voice modulation to fit the screen voices and image of Rajini and Kamal!!!
ARR on the other hand has not established any kind of "singer to actor" identity. Well...... maybe Hariharan nicely suited Arvind swamy but not for too long :)

in prsent times, I think karthik and tippu suit vikram very well... as for other "actors" i dont even consider them as actors. Surya is promising but whose voice suits him?
One thing that everyone will agree is that IR's voice PERFECTLY suited Nazar!!! "Thendral vanthu theendumbothu..." wow what a match!

V,
I think for a list of songs by these classical giants from IRs baton you will have to refer to the more seasoned DFers. Raajangahm has some songs
TVG(Raaja parvai) and BM(Kavikuyil). About Pattamal those songs probably fall under rare songs section and seasoned Dfers should be able to give more info. (hey ram has some renditions by her).
