Everyone is pretty bored and fed up with arguing on differences of opinions regarding MDs right ? After all typically, what would we TFMers discuss suppose we meet in person ?. Song discussions right ? So here is the thread.
Idea is someone will introduce a song and we all will discuss about the song, period. Limitation is we will automatically move to another song after 5 days of discussion. ie. anyone contributing to the thread after the first set of 5 days will have to come up with a new song!. Also whoever is starting first can state the ending date of five day period.
Some help from Ravi is required for this until some time for people to really start adhering to this.
BTW why 5 days ?? Obviously to keep the thread fresh and alive !!

Mounamana Neram from Salangaioli is one of my favourites.
Reasons for liking:
1. One of IR's great compositions, the way he has used western and indian instruments - outstanding.
2. SBP and SJ have underplayed the singing, especially SPB.
2. The way the song has been picturised is great, a particular moment where Kamal enters JP's house and then leaves her house with hesitation.
3. The song has an excellent flute piece which disappears into I dont know what ( maybe a synthesizer).
I will try to add more to this ..

Just a comment. I have always felt that "Mounamana neram" and "Salaiyoram solai vandhu" are similar

Murali Shankar
I posted before that if somebody can help with the lyrics, I can add to the description.
BTW,
This song is an excellent and a perfect song. It is great in everything. Excellent lyrics, Great picturisation, Sung well by SPB,SJ, fantastic music by IR, particularly the way he uses instruments. I think this is one of the songs which is oriented situationally and tells alot.
Every movement of each artiste of this song has some meaning. I think KV was at his best in this song.

Hai cram, thanx for the lyrics. Idhenna, maatti vuttuttenga, try pannraen
The situation as i know in the film involves Jeyapradha and KH. They both have fallen in love with each other but are resisiting to express it mutually. this probably is given by the first stanza. "Manadhil Oasaigal Idhazhil mounangal". It is a beautiful expression. the anu pallavi is not IMO all that impressive in lyrics. The poet says that it is impossible to stop the overflowing emotions. Can ever the waves be silenced by the seas - never. Infact this I feel is a very good lyric. Read ,you = KH:"It is your mind which says you are loving her. Will it possible for the same mind, whose inherent property is to be wavy, control itself to calm you down ? By this very attempt you are deceivng yourself". All the others are regular stuff to fill the space of music with some words.
Coming to charanam:
This IMO meets an absolute discontinuity. In the anaupallavi we sensed how meekly the poet tries to explain the situation where in the two are not even prepared to tell each other what they have in their minds. In the charanam's lyrics he had assumed that they had spent a night together! Atrocious! In the anupallavi the hero refrains from conveying his love for her and before the charanam comes he has finished everything ? That is what is implied:
"Ivalin manathil innum iravin eeramo
kodiyil malargal kulir kaayum neramo"
the socond line means that it is dawn and that the dew is slowly being driven off(Good imagination but a misfit). The rest is trite and i do not find any thing appealing abt the lyrics. But IR... he has infused life into the song. Recall how the song starts: Prelude,SJ's humming, flute .....(silence) "mounamana neram". Great expression !
NCR, is that Okay ?
Any takers ?
regards
Murali Sankar

Cram, thanks for your input.
Muralishankar,
You know when a film is dubbed, it looses originality. This is a dubbing version of Telugu movie Sagarasangamam. Though meaning is conveyed over all, the words exactly cant be same. You find misfit of words just because of this. But still great attempt and it almost matches the original. Your description is great. But I would try to add following to tell why it is too good
The greatness of this song is not just the lyrics or something. The situations that lead to this. The starting of this song is terrific. what a way to start a song!!!
Both KH and JP are in love but cant express. KH lacks the initiative to express his love. He tries many ways.
when they both togather travel in car just before this song, JP suggests that she always will be with KH to support him. Then KH is hesitant to tell what he has in mind. He calls her to confirm whether JP can be with her thru out the life. Even after getting confirmation, Still he doesnt tell.
JP knows this but she cant express because of her situation and she is confused what to do. You have to see JP's expressions when Kamal gives a rose to her before giving invitation and when he indirectly proposes her.
One has to remember that this song was on first night of Sarathbabu. JP gives SB's wife the casette player and tell her that only CP is hers but the song is written by SBabu. What a way to give a gift to somebody?
Now IR comes into picture with his great start to the song. The humming of SJ brings the mood into ones mind. Then KH sends SB in the room and JP comes out. Now both at a time try to close the door.
Music stops... Absolute silence....
Both move aside and KH try to move away from her as he gets some kind of feeling.( Remember its first night of his friend. )
Now no music for some time. Sound of some night birds.
Jp follows KH expecting something from him. But Kamal tries to avoid her. JP cant take anymore silence from KH and song starts.
Finally she takes the lead by
mounamana neram
iL manathil enna baaram
manathil oasaigaL
ithazhil mounangaL
yaenenru keLungaL.
I really like till this part of the song. You have to note that the starting of this song is by SJ not by SPB.
Great way to go from here to JP's and KH's imagination. Nothing was shown in the movie but just left to ones imagination. Rest of the song is just to express JP and KH's feelings.
Murali I feel that one may not dare to express each other but if somebody have feelings to each other they try to imagine a lot. You see the night in the song is a different. I dont think the poet is wrong. He has exactly shown the mentality of the characters. They are confused but unable to decide. That itself is clear if you read some situations between KH and JP before the song.
After this song KH approaches JP's father to ask JP. So KH is prepared for the next after the JP in Anupallavi. So he imagined himself with her. Situationally oriented song. You rarely find in movies.
I dont know whether I could understand what KV wanted to tell in this song but with what I understood, could imagine felt that this song is one of the best songs. May not be the best.
Thanks

Hi guys,
I am catching up after a long time with this thread :-). It is great to see the thread going smoothly in its course with a lot of discussions.
Murali,
Your discussion on Nalam Vaazha was great ! Also the the discussions following that were terrific too.
Now coming to Mounama Neram,
NCR your description on situations leading to the song were very good. Gives a good idea of the song. It has been a long time for me since I listened to the song.
It makes you relax so well.
One point I have felt about the song is,
The lines go
Mounamaana neram
Ila manathil enna baaram
Manathil osaigal
Ithazhil maunangal
Enendru kelungal.
The first 2 lines are sedate indicative of a calm before storm. Remembering that in this scene the 2 are tongue tied, consider the 3rd and 4th line. The pitch suddenly increases in the words "Manathil" and "Idhazil".
As if their thoughts are pushing them - sollu, sollu -
How about discussing "nallathor veenai seithe" once this is over ??
Mukund.

Thanks for your mail, Ravi. Been too tied up to check it frequently. Will get back to you by mail :-)
Hey Guys,
Lots of great songs are being discussed here. Wouldn't it be cool if we could hear those songs as well ? I am pretty sure that atleast some of you have .ra files of most of the songs here. Would any of you be interested in posting links to a .ra file of the song when the discussion starts ? Guys like Srikanth, MPR and Gopal who maintain their own web sites with a great collection of .ra files can also help out !
I have a collection of about 180 .ra files stolen from all over the web (some from Srikanth, MPR etc ;-) Sorry guys, I can't listen to streaming audio from my machine in the office due to the firewall, so I am forced to download the songs before I can listen to them :-( It's Ok at home though. If I can squeeze out some free time, I'll try to set up my own website and provide .ra links to the songs discussed here, if I have them. Till them I hope one of you guys can help out. Thanks in advance !

Yes NCR,
I agree that when a film is dubbed it loses its originality. but in the same fil "thagida thathimi" by Vaali has very good lyrics. I mean by this that, VM could have used a better set of expressions.
Dear Mukund,
thanx. but oru vishayaththil kavuththitteenga. I thought I will take up "Oh, Vennila" for discussion. mm.. paravaayillai. next eduththukkollallam allava ?
