"he.hee.hee...heee akshaam ajapshaam egyptiaam"
all were good in the movie even the maiyazhagan jai(thanks OISG), ofcourse except the gastroenteritis affected kind of behaviour exhibited by non-other than KRV.
the tournament scenes were a remake of english movie 'the absent minded professor'.
the picturisation of this SOTD does full justice to the tout - "the song written by KKD for Kamaraj".

Whenever I listened to 'andha sivagaami maganidam..' I am reminded of a naughty two lines by KD in that song.
'peNNena boomiyil piRantha pinnaalE
vElai vaNangaamal vERenna vElai..'
Besides the pun on the word 'vElai'
I feel that word 'vEl' is used as a double intendre by KD, if you know what I mean.

Song of the Day: poonkaatru pudhithaanathu from moondraam pirai.

- Felt like reliving this song after watching the song clip today. What a wonderful way in which the picturization and the song go hand in hand!
My favorite parts are the guitar prelude, and the second interlude. The fast violins in the second interlude are matched with an oncoming train in a foggy Ooty weather. Did Balumahendra visualize this scene after listening to the interlude, or did Ilayaraja compose the interlude after listening to BM's requirement? Tough to say, but the result is a song that is worth recollecting. Kamalhasan and Sridevi never looked better together than in this song.
- Someone had pointed out that the end of the first interlude, where the lead guidar ascends and the bass descends is pretty unique. Can knowledgeable folks clarify why?

Excellent song.
I remember the railways track incident. Both kamal and sridevi will be keeping their ears on the railway track. Kamal will act like visveswaraya and predict the direction in which the train is about to come. And it would come in the opposite direction. Sridevi's paavadai(or was it a lungi?) would get caught in the track. kamal adha eduthu viduvaar.
and subramani will run between kamal and sridevi in a sloap.
nice song.wonderful movie..subramani kku pottu vakkanum

great song.. my pick of the movie (more than kanne kalaimaane, blame it on the tv channels playing it again and again)..
'en vaazhvil nee vandhadhu vidhiyaanal nee endhan uyirandro'...

Great song.. Excellent picturization. BM could have easily made a part II of this one, I always think!

Just a few days back, when I was rummaging thru "andha sivagami maganidam",
I was frustrated at not being able to recollect another similar song "naadhaswara oosaiyile". Instead "Ponnezhil poothadhu pudu vaanil"
kept coming to me .Thanks to OISG for bringing that out.
The opening interlude and especially the first interlude of 'Poongaatru pudhidhaanadhu' gives a feeling of a fluttering butterfly.
'Vaanengum thanga vin meengal' is the best song IMO

however this tune is a very good example of song being very nice with prelude, interlude etc but if one has to sing this song without any accomplishing instruments esp. pallavi one might feel some kind of void in the tune.
may be the tune is created having great prelude and interludes in the mind.

One of those very few movies that I saw many times on silver screen ...remove the silk scenes and I'll classify this movie as an all-time classic...Balu Mahendra had a great taste then...everything about this song was absolutely great...picturisation of Nilgiris was so pleasant...Kamal-Sridevi at their best...Raja in his terrific innovative mood...KJY contributing with his veNkalakkural..
moondRam piRai's ending was probably one of the most heated topics of discussion in the hostel room then...why he called her viji...why can't he go and talk to them like a normal person...will Kamal again meet Sridevi or not etc... One of my classmates had another question too : why didn't Kamal marry Sridevi in real life, they seemed so much made-for-each-other:-)
I think payaNangaL mudivadhillai got released during the same time period and was probably more successful commercially and the songs of PM took away some of the focus MP deserved, IMHO...
'poongAtRu pudhidhAnadhu' is an evergreen classic...the rhythm arrangement for this song was unique again (comparable to nenjathai kiLLAdhE songs and not often repeated by IR...I'm sure it influenced ARR for his slow numbers)...thanks bb for reminding this beauty of a song!
I wonder why IR chose not to have this repeated in Sadma...who played the spoilsport? yEh zindagi (or its Thamizh version `en vAzhvilE' in thambikku endha ooru) is not even 25% of 'poongAtru'..

Another song very similar to 'Poonkaatru' in terms of arrangement/orchestration is "En Vaazhviley" from 'Thambikku Endha Ooru'.
- The constant "doing doing doing" bass in the pallavi.
- The first interlude opens *exactly* the same for both songs with that tabla.
- As for the second interlude, the latter portion is DITTO from 'Poongaatru'.
Makes you wonder why Raja did this for a song that came out 2 yrs after 'Moondram Pirai".

pKitcha, did you read my post above? Hindi version of moondRAm piRai is Sadma which had `poongAtRu' melody (tune) replaced by another with some changes in accompaniment and interludes as 'yEh zindagi'. `en vAzhvilE' of thambikku endha ooru is a ditto Thamizh replica of `yEh zindagi'...

"moondRam piRai's ending was probably one of the most heated topics of discussion in the hostel room then"
My gripe about the film was that BM didn't explore the sexual angle between Kamal and Sridevi. Just a couple of quick shots was all he could muster. The film would probably have added another dimension if this angle had been probed.

I think for both Vanengum and this one it was Vairamuthu. This is the favorite song for me as well.
Eden ,you are correct-both were released during the same period.
I saw both in KG complex in coimbatore-PM came without much expectations hence was running in pallavi-but was a bigger hit than MP. I still remember when SPB starts the first line in Ilayanila, I simply broke out in gooseflesh.Incidentally my favorite song in this movie is actually thogai ila mayil.how about others?
