For a good understanding of how to approach this ongoing symposium, please refer to the thread, "Kannadhaasan Vs. Vairamuthu TFM Symposium Topic 1:Iyarkai Varnanai" before you post. Let me reiterate that this is not a patti mandram, but a research symposium.
Please show TFM examples of both poets with regards to just Kaadhal Paadalgal for this thread. Let's roll.

kaNNadhAsanin kAdhal kavidhaigaL: My Overview
I'm going to borrow from literature to classify and organize songs by categories, so I can do some justice to this broad topic. After paying my due respects to kaviyarasar kaNNadhAsan first on this topic, I'll move on to pudhumaikkavignar vairamuththu.
There are some common threads running thru the kaNNadhAsan selections I'm presenting below: exquisite varuNanaigaL, deep/rich feelings, mischievous playfulness, mature sensuality, poetic presentation, tasteful words, classical literary touches & inspirations, sophisticated wordplay and more. And, it is important to note all these are done mostly in simple thamizh not intimidating to the comman (wo)man.
Since most of these are classics, I assume every DFer is familiar with these songs. I'm just going to highlight a few lines from a few songs.
Part I: thalaivi nalam eduththuraiththal/varNanai
In from mAlaiyitta mangai the ocean borrows its color from her eyes:
kaNgaLil neelam viLaiththavaLO--adhaik
kadalil koNdu karaiththavaLO
In AlayamaNi, she is the amalgam of all literary heroines. Note the subtle mischievous romance in the first line:
uNdendRu solvadhundhan kaN allavA--vaNNak kaNNallavA
...
kamban kaNda seedhai undhan thAi allavA
kALidhAsan sagunthalai un sEi allavA
ambikApathy azhaiththa amarAvathy
sendRa pinbu pAvalarkku neeyE gadhi
In this AMR classic from thEnilavu, she is everything to him--the elements of this finite world, time itself and the infinite God.
kAlaiyum neeyE mAlaiyum neeyE
kAtRum neeyE kadalum neeyE
AlayamaNi vAi Osaiyum neeyE
aruL vadivAgum dheivamum neeyE
In this AMR classic from thEnilavu, the hero's varNanai elicits mischievous, romantic responses from the heroine:
allith thaNdu pOlavE thuLLi Adum mEniyai
veLLi nilA aLLik koNdadhO
adhil puLLi mayil paLLi koNdadhO
..
pinni vaiththa koondhalil
mullaippovaich choodinAl
kanni nadai pinnal pOdumO--siRu
minnalidai poovaith thAngumO!
Heroine's response:
minnalidai vAdinAl
kanni undhan kaiyilE
annam pOla sAindhu koLLuvEn--adhil
andhi pagal paLLi koLLuvEn
This classic varNanai with the wordplay from idhayakkamalam:
thEdi vandha thingaL
thingaLil chevvAi
chevvAyil veLLi
sErththeduththEn aLLi
Another varNanai with a wordplay from kAththirundha kaNgaL:
alli pooththa mugaththinilE
mullai pooththa nagai engE
This full varNanai song from pAva mannippu describes the heroine as the best in every category. Let me just quote the lines which show the various shades of affection involved in kAdhal:
pAl pOl sirippadhil piLLai
pani pOl aNaippadhil kanni
kaN pOl vaLarppadhil annai
Another varNanai with wordplay and humor from muththu maNdapam:
kodiyavaLE! poongodiyavaLE!
kovvaich chevvAik (k)iniyavaLE
...
kaNgaL iraNdilum kaNai thoduththAL
karunAgam enap pinnalittAL
kuRunagai ennum visham koduththAL
uyir koNdu vittAL, enai vendRu vittAL!
This classic varNanai from apoorva rAgangaL is excellent in its classical touches and says so much in so few words:
peNmaiyin ilakkaNam avaLadhu dhEgam**
dhEvargaL vazhangidum kAviya yAgam
andha dhEvadhai kidaiththAl adhu en yOgam
[**need a varNanai say anymore?]
Part II: kAdhal siRappu uraiththal
The following classic & ultimate kAdhal pAdal exemplifies the total oneness and complementarity of a loving husband and wife who are a Universe unto themselves:
nAn pEsa ninaippadhellAm nee pEsa vENdum
nALOdum pozhudhOdum uRavAda vENdum
ondROdu ondRAga uyir sErndha pinnE
ulagangaL namaiyandRi vEREdhum illai
This classic from kalaikkoyil explains the mixture of anbu, mariyAdhai/dheiveegam, kAmam etc in a loving husband-wife relationship:
nAn unnai Erndha selvam
nee ennai ALum dheivam
..
nam kAdhal uLLam kalaikkoyil
nam kaNgaL koyyilukku vAsal
nanadhAsai koyil maNi Osai
angu "anbu vaNNa malar" poojai [creative!]
...
un achcham nANam endRa nAlum **
en arugil vandha pinbu anjum **
nam Asaith theeyum konjam ARum **
[** don't miss the wordplay]
Two impatient young things are sharing their feelings and desires unabashedly and quite poetically here:
angE mAlai mayakkam yArukkAga
ingE mayangum iraNdu pErukkAga
idhil nALai varum endRu kAththirundhAl
oru nAL allavA veeN Agum?
Adach cholvadhu thEn malar nooRu
arundhach cholvadu mAnganich chARu
koodach cholvadhu kAviri ARu
koduppAr koduththAl maRuppavar yAru?
This classic from veeraththirumagan explains how uNmaikkAdhal goes beyond superficial barriers like status etc.:
vArAi arugE mannavan neeyE
kAdhal samam andRO bEdham ilaiyandRO
kAdhal nilai aandRO?
Ezhai endRAlum rAjakumAran
rAjA magaLin kAdhal thalaivan
uNmai idhuvandRO ulagin muRai andRO
endRum nilai andRO
The same social message in the following classic from pAva mannippu:
kAdhalukku jAdhiyillai madhamum illaiyE
kaNgaL pEsum vArththaiyilE bEdham illaiyE
This classic mixes tenderness, love and sensuality in this song sung by a caring husband to his wife without speech faculties:
mounamE pArvaiyAl oru pAttup pAda vENdum
nANamE jAdaiyAl oru vArththai pEsa vENdum
allik kodiyE undhan mullai idhazhum thEn
ARu pOlap pongi vara vENdum
angam thazhuvum vaNNath thanga nagai pOl ennai
aLLich choodik koNdu vida vENdum
This literary classic raves about the suddenness and permanence of love at first sight:
nEtRu varai nee yArO nAn yArO
indRu mudhal nee vERO nAn vERO
kANum varai nee engE nAn engE
kaNdavudan nee engE nAn angE
This classic wordplay describes his absolute ecstasy in their togetherness:
kodith'thEn ini engaL
kudith'thEn ena oru
padith'thEn pArvayil kudith'thEn-oru
thuLith'thEn sindhAmal kaLith'thEn--kaigaLil aNaith'thEn azhaginai rasith'thEn!
This classic describes the effect love has on this couple:
ennarugE nee irundhAl
iyaRkai ellAm suzhaluvadhEn?
unnarugE nAn irundhAl
ulagam ellAm AduvadhEn?
kai aNaindha vELaiyilE
kai iraNdum mayanguvadhEn?
minsAram pAindhahu pOl
mEni ellAm nadunguvadhEn
This classic from sumaithAngi gives a reason for the institution of marriage:
nenjil iruvarum iNaindha pin
thirumaNam Enadi rAdhA?
adhu iLamaiyin nAdakam
arangaththil varuvadhu rAjA
Part III: Privu Ekkam
This is a classic inspired by ancient thamizh literature for a regular movie, depicts the heroine's sensual pining away for the hero and her exchange with a counseling friend (italicised):
panneer nadhiyil kuLiththu vandhAlum
paruvam thoongumE thalaivi
venneer nadhiyaip panneer enavE
pEsal AgumO thOzhi
idai aNi mEgalai vizhundhidum vaNNam
Engal AgumO thalaivi
kadai irundhum poruL koLvOr illaiyE
kalakkam varAdhO thOzhi
This classic is again literature-inspired (thirukkuRaL) for a regular movie, and depicts the heroine wasting away due to separation:
mAlaip pozhudhu vandhu padai pOlak kollum
varuvAr varuvAr ena sEdhiyum sollum
Alilai pOndRa udal Asaiyil thuLLum
andhiyilE iyaRkai ennaiyum vellum
ponmaNi mEgalai puRam koNdu veezhum
pulambum silamb(u) iraNdum ennai vittu Odum
kai vaLai sOrndhu vidum kaNgaLum moodum
kAnbavar ungaLaiththAn pazhi solla nErum
[kaNNadhAsan uses a 2nd century word "Ayizhai" in this song.]
In this classic from karNan, the wife is complaining about a husband who's too busy ruling the country:
araNmanai aRivAn ariyaNai aRivAn
andhappuRam ondRu iruppadhai aRiyAn
varugindRa vazhakkaith theerthu mudippAn
manaiviyin vazhakkai manadhilum ninaiyAn
Part IV: pirivuth thuyar
In this classic from maNNAdhi mannan, he is missing his lady love who is in a distant country:
pooviri sOlaiyil mayilAdum
purindhE kuyilgaL isai pAdum
kAviri arugE nAn irundhAlum
kaNNE en manam unai nAdum
neeyO nAnO yAr nilavE
indRu nimmadhi izhandhadhu yAr nilavE
In this classic, she is exhorting her treacherous heart to forget him:
ninaikkath therindha manamE
unakku maRakkath theriyAdhA
pazhagath therindha uyirE
unakku vilagath theriyAdhA
In this classic she gets philosophical about separation:
uRavu endRoru sol irundhAl
pirivu endRoru poruL irukkum
kAdhal endRoru kadhai irundhAl
kanavu endRoru mudiv(u) irukkum
In this classic, she asserts that a loving heart never forgets:
nenjam maRappadhillai
adhu ninaivai izhappadhillai
...
oru pozhudhEnum unnudanE nAn
uyirAl iNaindhiruppEn--adhai
iRappinilum maRupiRappinilum nAn
endRum ninaiththiruppEN
Part V: oodalum koodalum
This classic with its excellent wordplay has been discussed seeral times in DF. Depicts a cute way of the husband "buttering up" his "oodaling" wife:
mAdhuLan'gAi AnAlum
ennuLam kAi AgumO?
ennai nee kAyAdhE
ennuyirum nee allavO?
uLLam ellAm'iLagAyo
ovvoru pEch'churaikkAyO
veLLarikkAi piLandhadhu pOl
veNNilavE nee sirikkAyO
Another classic from policekAran magaL where he is trying to make up with his lady love after a little oodal:
nilavukku en mEl ennadi kObam
neruppAi erigiRadhu
indha malarukku en mEl ennadi kObam
muLLAi mARiyadhu
Here is a teasing oodal from this classic from thEnilavu:
Hero:
mugaththai mugaththai maRaiththuk koNdAl
pArkka mudiyumA?
Heroine:
indRu pArththu pArththu mudiththu vittAl
nALai vENdumE?
Hero:
kaNai thoduthu thoduthu mirattum kaNNAl
pArkkal AgumO?
There are SO many shades of love, and kaNNadhAsan has covered most of them so well, that this is not over yet. Back later to add a few......
