hi,
In junior vikatan they are publishing an interview of ARR. it started last week & i think it will go upto 10 or more issues. this week there is an interesting Qn. & more interesting answer. I'll try to translate it for U !
Q : When IR was in top of music indudtry., he did music for 4 or 5 films at a time., but he was able to show some variety in songs. none of his 2 songs released at same time will be similar. But u r doing only one film at a time., u take lot of time but the final result -- ??., almost of all ur works look similar ! Why this happens ??
A : This may be due to the fact that i use same set of instruments in all songs with different combinations !
WHAT A 'MAZUPPAL' ANSWER !
DFers., what do u think about this. I think the Qn. is quite valid. for e.g take GUNA & THALAPATHY which are released on the same day. see the variety IR is able to produce between the songs of these films. IMHO ARR is lagging in this & thats why he didn't tried to object the Qn.
UR OPINIONS PLEASE !

MSK,
There is nothing comedy in saying there is variety in jeans. I actually compared his songs in Jeans and Iruvar. Both were tuned well according to the situations. Forget his repeating the same set of tunes again and again. He is able to repeat his success again and again. That is more important. Today, ARR is the most successful MD in the Indian Film Industry, let alone, TFM. I just meant to say, that instead of comparing his music with that of a genius like IR, let us welcome his good songs and comment on songs which we don't like. He has his own style and the cassette sales tells us that people, especially the younger generation, like his music so much than the music of any other MD, including IR. Take the cassette sales of "Jeans" and compare it with "Kaadhalukku Mariyaadhai". Jeans is doing well than KM. It doesn't mean that ARR is better or IR is better. What we people want is good music. Don't bother whether it comes from ARR or IR. Both are good in their own styles. IR is more appreciated after so much years in the industry. Let's see if ARR too does the same after some 20 years.

Shanmugam ,
100% agreed that ARR is the #1 MD in TFM and probably in HFM also.( i don't follow HFM so maybe i am wrong). Also agreed that his albums sell much much more than other MD's in TFM today. No questions asked.
But ,What i was referring was the lift of a RD Burman's tune and the repetition of his style even in his latest Soooooper hit Jeans .. that's all. I agree that it's a fact that people seem to like this repetition and that's what seems puzzling..
Referring back to ARR's interview , does he have a straight answer if i ask him the above question abt repeated style.. I am sure in his next album there will be one song "Clinton Clinton ..." or "Monica Monica nee thaane intern " etc etc..
and another song which might probably go like
"x verb y " .. x could be Alagu , poo etc .., and y could be athisyam , alagu , artham etc..
And this has been happening in every album.
If this is Variety , and you say they are good just b'cos they sell like hot cakes.. then i give up.!!
Cheers
MSK

I am beginning to see the seed of yet another IR-ARR confrontation. I have given up :-(((
It causes only heartburns and nothing else.

In the JV interview, apparently most questions were targetted at his relationship with IR. (People are the same everywhere you see!)
ARR has told that he worked with IR for Moondram Pirai. (Must have been a kid then!) And also did some 'combined-study' (whatever-that-means) while working on Punnagai Mannan as he too got himself a computer just as Raja did. He has also praised IR for his simplicity and his ability to be swift in composing numbers and considers him his inspiration for his spiritual leanings...
He comes off as a level-headed, market-savvy young guy, and IMO an inspiration for this generation of youngsters.
I am definitely NOT an ARR basher, but would like to share this info. with you: (I had posted this at an earlier thread, but that has been wound-up)
People who have watched EARTH, the second in Deepa Mehta's trilogy, have been criticizing ARR for a BGM score that "..is ok, but has little or no relevance to the period the movie is set in.."(India-Pak partition days)
I believe the film has been released in the Festive circuits. Has any one seen it?
I believe he scored well for 'Anthi Mandaarai'. Was the film released in India?
Many thanks
Neels

I have been foll. ARR's interviews. I have never seen him comment appreciatively of IRs musical talents. He almost always dodges the question (for eg. talking about his and religiousness).
I sense a bit of insincerity here. Since, I have confessed in this forum that I like IRs music I might be accused of being a ARR basher :-)

This reminds me, there was an album released in Britain by one Tavleen singh (he is a percussion guy, 2nd generation NRI, I guess) by the name "SONGS OF THE ASIAN UNDERGROUND". I bought it in Paris (upon my friend's recommendation) and was quite surprised to find the Bombay theme score as one of the tracks in the album.
Wonder if 'Mani' or the producers of Bombay knew about this!

arr has given a CANDID answer , what's wrong .
when ir can stick on to tabla and more tabla
from annakelli to KM and still produce identical
music(courtesy colgate sabtha swarangal , in one
round where 2 similiar songs are mixed , majority
of them are ir's)but with different tunes and invariably uses mano chitra & SPB.
but arr uses the latest instruments (kaluri vasal) also never ignores folk(maarootu mandaiyele).he tries out new voices , bcoz of his experiment we have today some xcellent singers like hariharan, unni krishnan
sreeni, sujata, unni menon,anupama.....so arr bashers sit and think over, before critizising him.

Woe be me if I have to run my life on your silly advice. ARR is a mediocre MD, compared to IR. He's better than Deva, orginal, innovative, creative and all that stuff. Kannu...IR has been there and further beyond. ARR bashing requires more qualifications than you are aware of. It requires a refined taste of the highest level. You need to be an IR fan to realize why we think so poorly of ARR. Since you obviously are not, you might consider keeping your useless advice to yourself.

** unni menon and sujatha were "unearthed" by ARR? ** and he never ignores folk unlike IR?
you're just joking, aren't you?
and, why don't u also add to his list of successful experiments, the grate(intended) voice of udit nara, nara, nara, yan!
and, before u forget, IR's always stuck to saying that he's basically rechurning music that's already there. never has he claimed otherwise.
oh, invariably using SPB, Chitra & Mano would be a sin in ur dictionary, ain't it? u guys have made such a virtue out of this silly experimentation that we have all kinds of people inflicting their torture on tamil (atleast supposedly) lyrics. that's the only ripple-effect ARR can be proud of having caused in IR. hope to god that IR doesn't get as influenced as to detonate a "kuluvalley-le" on us.
thalaiva, just a small sample - try IR's "etho moham" from kozhi koovudhu & then talk about experiments.

i never asked you guys to shift loyalty from ir to
arr but try and contemplate the zenith arr has
touched in such a tender age.
udit's voice is so fondling & cute & it's used
to give a hep to the song & nothing more.you people never spoke a word about hariharan, sreeni,
unnikrishan , their superb voices and modulations
is worth a mention.ir completely depended on mano, chitra, spb occassionally m.vasudevan, arunmozi
it isnt a sin but still it lacked variety & all
the songs seemed alike eg ninaivellam nitha ,
thendrale yennai thodo,udaiya geetham,manvasanai'
jonny so on, all songs romantic songs are alike &
sad songs are alike , only tunes different.
but take gentleman usallampatti-folk duet
chiku buku - disco, paakaathe -freaky
minsarakanavu vennilave-melody,strawberry-latin ballet,mana madurai-carnival kallata
the songs are varied and compelety different from one another.ir 's monotony is so obvious when it
comes to latest eqipments.you people cannot defend
ir in this aspect (this is the reason why his music is seems often a repetition of his old songs)
