Ilaiyaraja and the bass guitar!
Dear All, Im a newbie to this wonderful site. Ive just been going through the old IR threads, especially 'Ilaiyaraja and the guitar' and the like. I was fascniated by the way ppl had discussed these topics (Mux, Kanchana and Kitcha ... hats Off!) I am absolutely bowled out by IRs use of the bass guitar in many many songs, like Ninnukori, POOgatru PudhirAnathu and so on. Im planning to learn the acoustic guitar and I thought Ilaiyaraja's love for the bass guitar shopuld be discussed more in detail. Please post ur comments!

It is amazing how IR has been doing this ( bass guitar work) since probably from his very first years in TFM, Kiru u are right, I have observed bass guitar work with GKV's kannada movies especcially during the years when IR was his assistant ( particularly Bangarada Manushya, it even has title cards showing IR's name as David Raja as assistant to GKV), sometimes I think we have wasted enough of our times not appreciating these special compositions of IR,
I have started reinventing ( rather appreciating, now that I have some good recordings available in some of the old gems) lot of IR's old songs
I was just listening to " kaadhal oviyum's song" Kuyile Kuyile...) by SPB and SJ, amazing bass guitar work in the background and the singers just give ful life to the song ( I wish we had more singers like them)
Please all of u keep adding the old gems ( which have not been very well appreciated by many of us) which have the special guitar work of IR
Kiru , I envy your IR's original collections in CDs ( 200 CDs , plus lots of original LP vinyl record, I saw ur posting in the other thread) man how did u manage to get so much stuff, perhaps u are the only individual I and many in this forum have heard of a collection close to 1/3 rd of Raja's entire lifetime work, that's like a treasure worth several millions IMHO.
Anyways, I have a big request ( Kiru avrgalukku) ,just post us a oneliner when u come across a rare Raja's ( old movie) CD for the source where available for other HC IR fans
I tried for the old LP records In Bangalore during my recent visit, but failed , may be I didn't try very hard I guess
Long live Maestro and his great music

Prabhudas..no no..I do not have 200 CDs (have < 100 CDs)..only 200 movies on CDs. The 100 or so LPs have lots of duplication. Even among CDs many movies are not complete. Sree has way more than me.
There are so many songs of IR that it would be very difficult for us all to collect, and even if you collected to listen to them all. I initially was particular about not buying pirated CDs/mp3s etc. But now I take whatever I can (for eg malayalam mp3s of IR). Since I buy so much of IRs work I dont feel guilty about that.
BTW, the bass work in IRs songs is a PERIOD. He even has a style in a particular movie.
Listen to sigappu rOjakkal, mudhal mariyadhai for some good bass work as well.
(I will enter my CD database into a spreadsheet. Or if you know of a spreadsheet with IR's entire works let me know. I think eden has it)

Hi
Another (not really recent) song I listened " Ingu Irukkum Kaalam varaikkum" from Ethir kaatru" nice guitar work,
I happened to watch a clip of a old vijaykanth and Swapna's movie " Nenjile thunivirundaal" in Sun TV ( the one and only reason why I like Sun TV, I have been able to watch some old IR movie clips and pictures) probably released in 1979 or 1980, the BGM had IR's humming with some great BGM pieces
what songs were in this movie?
Kiru,
Good to know about " S Rojakkal" and "M Mariyadhai" songs, as u said earlier, I am really hooked to these bass guitar work trying to search in many old songs of IR.
Where did u find the malayalam MP3 Cd of IR works (Chennai or Bangalore) ?
just one more off topic related question, have u set up any MP3 streaming in ur home network, just wanted to know if u or anyone in the forum are doing this
and finally, ur post in the other thread about the possibility of a write up on " How to listen to IR's Music" is very very interesting, it will be really another great project if many knowledgable contributors like you, vel and others make it happen, many times I have been carried away by the write ups by 'bb' in the "SOTD" thread about IR's songs with quotes and references by TFM forum members ( some of them are excellent)
Digression Start
Vijay,
I looked at Prashanth's Projectgem, it is a very good idea/project, I did read about it in Yahoo IR group sometime back. Are u involved with the project also?
TFMforum admin should make a sticky thread or a direct link from forum for better publicity if it is feasible.
Prashanth,
Venus audio also released "mahadev" hindi film by IR with some nice songs although a couple of them were Tamil rehash with different orchestration , is it possible to have "kamagni" and " Mahadev" to be released in one album by Venus
For others who have not heard "kamagni" and " Aswamedham" Telugu definitely worth having a personal copy, ofcourse the kannada film " NMH" has been discussed many times in the forum in the past.
digression end

Srivatsan,
That is little too much , there are many other bigtime and highly knowledgable TFM forum participants, some of them are not seen any more , some probably do visit irregularly like me.
I am originally from a place called " Mulbagal" in Kolar district ( of Karnataka), adhedaan andha Kolar Thanga vayalin district, later moved to Bangalore, since it is a border area and I was lucky to thoroughly enjoy Tamil, telugu and Kannada films of IR for a long time, gone are those days, I loved lots of old kannda movie songs ( perhaps the only medium where almost all contemporary, then, MDs were equally great from GKV to Upendra Kumar, very unusual to see such thing happen in other film fields, like in TFM, it was either MSV/KVM/IR/or ARR not all of them ruling the field at the same time except probably IR and ARR, in terms of giving quality music)
More to Bass guitar now,
Chinna Veedu " ada machan" song, I never thought there was such a great number in that movie apart from " Chittu kuruvi", till Vijay constantly mentioned about this song in the rare IR songs thread, I am just freaking out with this song for last few weeks
Any body with the answer for my last weeks query on " Nenjile Thunivirundaal" songs
More after watching " Virumandi" in theatre
