"Today, music directors think globally. There's so much information available. With the exception of A R Rahman, most of the composers have no distinct style today; they're in the process of sifting through the information and influences to discover their own identity."
So, guys, what do you say? I guess that a big part of this is true, but I'm sure you'll all have a lot to say about this.....

Kupps,
I do not deny ARR"S effort ...or any other MD's effort ....
but please !!!! all through this forum , when we talk about a song we generally eulogize the MD only ...we forget the Lyricist behind it.....DO not start an argument ....that the camera man , dance master is also behind it..!!!
VM may not be as good as before ...but please he is THE BEST of the lot.
IN ARR era he set a new trend & innovation ( i do not want to explain further ... ) before VM -ARR combo started...the lyrics were nothing short of pathetic..(ON an average) ..Wanna listen to many IR songs with menaingless lyrics( in good songs....) ...even by Vali Mane/thene/malar/vandu /nila/then/poo..standard words....standard phrases....
See how beautifully VM explains tamil grammer .. "errattai kelevi" in jeans song....& matches it with lovers....the theory of birth & death is effortlessly explained in Nathiye song....which haunts...!!! YOU mean these kind of songs can have a lasting impact on you without LYRICS.......IT CANNOT.!!!
ARR or IR or MSV ..owe a part of their efforts in being successful...to their lyricists....
Do not you remember ? IR/VM/KBalachander/ tried giving the same message to all that excellent CCM is waste wothout the meaning of the lyrics reaching the masses....!!!!! SO for the message to reach the masses...LYRICIST is important .....
MSV was more dependent on Kannadasan...YES... till today if you listent to paarthen, sirithen song....it is ALSO because of the "soft" touching lyrics......
YOU know better that "lyrics" ----is nothing but the FRONT END MUSIC of any SONG. ONce SPB sings the lyric....it is MUSIC....so the selection of words....is important for this "FRONT END"
When you speak a word,....it has a certain "musical element in it " so LYrics is nothing but another form of music /sound.
Beautiful tunes with awful words...can end being awful songs....!!!
Answering you:
I quoted kannuku maiazhagu as an example...I did not say it is a great song...... BUT the TUNE is PATHEIC>>>>school RHYME ......
Uppu karuvadu: no commnts you hate it i like it..
Yaaro Yarodi...: PUrusen....THis is the job of the MD & the singer to decide how to pronounce a word......NOT THE Lyricist....( larger extent)
RAHMAN has a unique way of pronouncing any word .....in the same film the "mangalyam thanthuthenanew" song...should i quote more ?
Kangal ( eyes) : Kankal...
More in next...

>>>I quoted kannuku maiazhagu as an example...I did not say it is a great song...... BUT the TUNE is PATHEIC
If that is a pathetic song , then shall I know your esteemed opnion on what is a good song and std. X , plus 2, UG and PG lyrics.
Accept it or not pudhiya mugam is THE BEST of ARR and all songs in that are immortals.
Okay...to avoid bashing on me ...all I sad is based on MHO.

man,
Disagree with this
THis is the job of the MD & the singer to decide how to pronounce a word......NOT THE Lyricist....( larger extent)
It is mainly the job of the lyricist and the singer. For example, if ARR scores for a telugu movie, will he be able to make the singers pronounce telugu properly. But the lyricist can and must do it. I am not saying only lyricist is responsible. All the three - MD,Lyricist and the singer- must be involved.

And of course, we can add the highly philosophical "ottagatha kattikko" to this list of masterpieces by VM.

song,
in a lighter vain....do you think ARR worries about pronouncing words correctly...at all at least in TAMIL.. leave aside TELUGU ....???
If so would he allow singers like......i leave it to your imagination ...!!!
Common friend:
A good song is ones own opinion as you have said...My view is many songs of ARR are damn simple tunes....like the ones sung in All india radio ...."backed up" by good lyrics....from VM.
SO for the "backing up" pls give VM his due....whcih is what i argue....
Hamma hamma..song/muquabala song/september matham song..........any lyrics would do ...it is the music/beat which matters there.....
snehithane..song...pachai nirame/ defintely lyrics are important....the song conveys a beautiful message.... if not for the lyrics....the songs would not have an lasting impact....!!!

man,
this is what is commonly called wag thje dog scenario! VM is not a vital cog in the ARR wheel. To an average cassatte buyer VM does not matter that much. he is more of a value add.
There was a lyricist / asst director whom we hosted recently here. he is called arivumathi. he wrote lyrics for " deepangal pesum", "athini chiotioni" and "orunaal intha oru naal".
he had many appreciations/critisisms for VM. But he said 1 imp thing. no producer or MD places a lyricist as imp. it is a common assumption that lyricist is not a necessary and suff. condition to sell a cassatte. VM came up because of his people skills.
There r a lot of songs which were not actually VM's but it came out in his name because the producers did not care to publish the names of the other lyricist. if u see the credits in the movie u will notice more than 1 lyricist for a lot of movies u thought was just VM.
in anycase my point is 8/10 people buy it for the tune/ MD brand name/ after listening to it in TV/ banner name.
I have seen ppl who dont buy much of deva/KR buying aasai/ dumdum dum. Or people who dont buy cassattes much buying shankar MR's movies. some ppl who just buy IR/ARR movies
the common denominator is we rarely wud buy a song based on the lyricistand more importantly VM not being there would dissuade very few people from actually buying the cassatte.
so to say VM was imp to ARR's sucess is an exxageration and i wud stop just saying that he was a great value add like a diwali bonus(not the actual salary)

I agree to this to a large extend, but I beleive that every thing is a team effort and ARR's each songs is an output from a team where even the singers play a part. He letting singers to improvise on his tune itself is a proof for this. So, ARR is a complete MD who takes alsong with him the lyricist, singer and the picturisers ( to an extend). I hate to see a badly picturised song of ARR. The word badly here has a meaning of my own. I as a lover od ARR's song make big immaginations about a songs picturisation. I feel teriblely disappointed when I find the songs are badly shooted.
Ex. "hamma hamma " from bombay.
.....I think I am going off the track.

Songs in Mudhal mariyadhai don't look like they needed "enough money" to picturise, how come they came out so good?

songs in mudhal mariyadai required simple subtle picturization.
If money had spent and taken with lot of ....whatever( i still dont know how else he cud've taken it)It wud have been worse.
Those arent the songs I am talking about! I'm talking abt songs which have scope for imaginative picturization but were taken blandly.
"raja rajadi rajan.." frm AN wud be bland if it had bhagyaraaj doing exercise instead of karthik & co in egmore railway station with PCS camera n lightin really rockin!
i'm talkin abt those kind of songs... humma humma had sonali bendre in a cheap set ( a tent sort of thing like those in VGP golden beach) with some "x" prasad dancingg arnd her with 5 other thugs.
no imagination/special camera angles/ locations to really leave the viewers breathless. It was ARR's first solo and it was a pretty good down by the way!

and the songs were massive hits even before the movie was released and there were no SUN, moon, bull and bharat tv's to give the promos...

that's called the freudian slip ;-)

so were //"Tajmahal, taal, daud, uzhavan, thakshak, 1947 earth"//
first understand what the discussion is about and then we all can show our skills on smart comments.
its like saying "potatoe prices were less when AN was released he he" makes no relevance to whats goin on!
