Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Met Greatness----
And thus ended our rendezvous with perfection, our tryst with grace, charm and a heart full of goodness. Thinking over the meeting, as I have done so many times in the last one month, these are my impressions of VJ— complete absence of rancour towards anyone, unreserved appreciation for other talented singers, grateful for the wonderful songs that came her way, heart-warmingly humble, yet adequately conscious of her achievements and delightfully responsive to the enthusiasm of her ardent fans.
She has never sat sulking when her film opportunities started dwindling- she ventured whole-heartedly into non-film albums like Bhajans, Tamil devotionals, Tumris, Abhangs, Ghazals. She is constantly on tour, giving concerts all over India and also in various places abroad. At the prior invitation of the Devasthaanam, she sang in Thirumalai just one day after Chandrababu Naidu was injured in a bomb blast there. Anyone else would have had second thoughts about it, not VJ. To her, a commitment is a commitment; meant to be honoured at any cost. “But I thought that not many people will turn up, considering the scare and the Police restrictions. You will not believe it--I was astounded to see the hall packed to capacity--there were people even standing in the aisles” she said her eyes widening with surprise.
When we met her, she had just returned from Jaipur, where she had been invited to give a concert in an Inter College Cultural Festival. She is the same gracious VJ to everyone- right from the august Thirumalai Tirupati Devasthaanam to an unprivileged Lepers’ Home, whose inhabitants she enthralled with a concert sometime back. “They affectionately gave me a beautiful hand-woven bedspread--you can see it covering my bed now” she said happily.
She had also shared her experiences of serving, more than once, in the National Film Awards Jury. She deplored the attitude of some members who lobbied strongly for their own films. “One year, I sincerely felt that MSV Sir’s splendid work in Pathini Penn deserved recognition. But I didn’t suggest it--as a member of the Jury, my conscience wouldn’t permit me to, as I had sung the songs” she said, in another display of unshakeable principles and glittering integrity, such a rare commodity in today’s world.
Subsequent to the meeting, V and I spoke over the phone a few times. We spoke about meeting again before I left. Bur unfortunately, due to my pre-occupation with various family obligations, it couldn’t materialise.
Guys, I am not given to crowing normally, but just this once, I crave your pardon. And I know this will gladden your hearts too. A few days after meeting her when I spoke to her over the phone, she opened the conversation by enquiring my exact age. When I answered, she said “ Yes, I thought it be around that. You are young enough to be my son! Jairamji and I have just read through the chronology. We are showing it to everyone who’s visiting us—and everyone is highly impressed. We are frankly amazed and at the same time deeply moved by your painstaking work. How was it possible for you? You must have been a toddler when I entered tfm!”
I didn’t know what to answer--I could only tell her that I had grown up listening to her songs, and I remember the songs that I’d heard on the radio, and ever since I started earning, I have tried to collect her songs, even the rarest ones. I then told her that the warm encouragement and gratifying responses that I received after posting each instalment of the chronology was a powerful motivating factor. I also sheepishly admitted there are some omissions in the chronology—songs that I recollected subsequently or rediscovered in my collection. For instance, I spoke of a long forgotten song that I had discovered anew in my collection that I had left behind in Chennai- A scintillating VJ solo that goes ‘Olai thaangi selladi’ from the unreleased film Anbu Magal. (Music by veteran CN Pandurangan. Lyrics by Sozhavandhan Rajangam. The record’s year of manufacture was 1974)
There was brief silence, then VJ said that she now found a new meaning in these lines that she had sung, and went on to recite ‘Iraivan ena oruvan, enadhisaiyil mayangida varuvaan, rasigan endra peyaril, indru avan thaan unnai koduthaan’
Guys, I am not able to put to words my feelings at that moment—even now I become emotional as I recall those words. I am wholly aware that it is you all who made this possible. Frankly, I never expected to last more than a few instalments. One- I have never tried writing anything like this before; and two- I am easily diverted, totally disinclined to any serious application, and phenomenally lazy. Yes, I have been deeply interested in tfm since childhood, but never found anyone to share this interest with. It was you all, who with your enthusiastic responses, and constant encouragement, (and sometimes mild rebukes when I have been playing truant for a while!), that drove me to continue; always with unceasing amazement that this is possible for me!
I thank each one of you for making it possible.

More than the singer, I am glad you had the opportunity to discover VJ the person. Of all the film personalities/artistes I've been acquainted with (and have interviewed for journals) there are two who left an indelible and eternal mark on my "journalist" soul (appadinnu onnu irukka?): Poise, Intelligence (this is a combination of memory, context and confidence in their responses) and Sincerity: Vani Jairam is the first, and Shabana Azmi is the second. I will forever cherish my conversations with these two stalwarts. They are the benchmark for my own journalistic excellence -
super, natural brilliance. Not many can meet these exacting standards. And I am thankful for all the good karma that made these interviews possible in my lifetime.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and memories with us. For me, personally, this corroboration is exquisite. For I've met greatness too :-)

>> I am not given to ....pardon. <<
Saravanan:
Oh! You are the last one who needs to apologize, I say :-)
I know I am saying the same thing over and over again. But your chronology has been in many ways a means for me to get introduced to the theme behind every song, the central idea of the lyrics, the situation of the film when this song was recorded etc. I could not have come to know so much ever (apart from guessing the theme from the tune of the song or its rhythm), because I haven't seen these films and I do not understand the Tamil language. So for a non-Tamil, your chronology is a double-wonder, besides the very fact that it is written in such beautiful English. I particularly thank you for your write-ups on classical songs by VJ. For one, I have a fascination for semiclassical tunes even in films, and I tend to appreciate these types of songs more. These songs are VJ's forte (though she is of course wonderful in many other genres) and your descriptions have benefitted me immensely. They are a pleasure to read over and over and over again.
Your work will always be of archival interest not only for laymen like I am, but also for the professional critics and the film personalities themselves. I am really not surprised that VJ was so immensely pleased with your work. It is absolutely, absolutely superlative!

Saravanan,
Thanks so much for the writeup. Your writeup is the best gift I got this holiday season. Your descriptions and attention to details makes me feel like I had watched your meeting with VJ on television. Of course, I have given you an uruvam which may be totally off reality.
About a week ago, after more that two decades I happened to listen to "pattula sElai kazuththula rathina mAlai" and "nAkkula mUkkula" on internet radio. It is really upsetting how rare these songs have become and how infrequently the singer is thought about. Thanks to you now at least the readers of the thread get some insight into the singer and the person VJ is.

Saravanan,
I relished every single word of your write-up. Thanks for sharing it so eloquently with all of us and giving us a glimpse of your special moments with a legend. I do hope VJ will get the opportunity to read it and appreciate your sentiments and effort. It's been said before, but it is imperative that a publishing vehicle be identified to carry this to a larger, musically inclined audience. http://www.dhwanii.com/ is a good candidate but I suspect it may not have the readership that this write-up deserves.

"Iraivan ena oruvan, enadhisaiyil mayangida varuvaan, rasigan endra peyaril, indru avan thaan unnai koduthaan" - there is probably nothing that could equal the joy and the overwhelming emotion you must have gone through when someone, you greatly admire, says the above to you. Wow, you are blessed.
Every single word and expression in "Meeting greatness" had its impact on me in a way that I can't put in words. I feel grateful to you for leading us all through this blissful journey by sharing your happiness and emotional moments with us.
I am very happy for you, for all the wonderful moments you had with VJ. And, whether this chronology is published or not (it would be such a shame to have this unpublished), your goal is more than achieved when the subject of your essays, Vani, herself read it and liked it. This, in my mind, is the biggest reward for that piece of work. It is something you can cherish for the rest of your life.
Thanks again and may god bless you and your writing.

I don't know what hour it was when "naakula mookula naththubulakkula..." was on net FM, but had I known (yeah, impossible to predict the line up on those programmes) I would have done my best to tune in - even at 3 a.m.! It is one duet I've been seeking for many many years. No song file for any of the songs from Chinna Chinna Veedu Katti anywhere on the net (no cassettes in any chennai stores too, I am certain.) The song is another lost SG original! (Kanna Un Radhai from the same film is another fine solo by VJ.)
To look back with astonishment once again: I rediscovered another VJ-TMS duet from Siriththu Vazha Vaendum (Zanjeer remake?):
Ponmanachchemalai Punnpadachcheidhadhu Yaaro
Adhu Yaaro
Un Manam Enbadhum En Manam Enbadhum Vaero
Arivaaro
Such a fine composition - simple, hummable and memorable - by MSV. VJs opening of this song - just the first line - is enough enchantment. Although this duo sang very few songs together, most of their offerings are spellbinding - Ammanai, Andavan Illa, Naal Nalla Naal, Paalodu Thaen Kalandha, Senthamizh Sondhangal, Sugam Sugam Idhu...
The added bonus when I listen to them after these many years are the lyrics. Luminous and lingering - all at once!
