Dear all,
I think Baba seems to be a good attempt on a different story line
and my gut feeling is that it will reach our audience back home very
well especially ladies since it involves spiritual & sentimental
stuff.
Even though it has got some visible faults mostly editing, overdose
of graphics and some unnecessary lengthy scenes which makes the
movie little boring, it is a watchable movie.
Iam so shocked to hear some of the website reviews like sify on the
movie. The truth is that the movie is not that bad at all. Its true
that we may not feel this movie as his previous blockbusters like
Baasha,Annamalai etc. even though it has got all the punching
dialogues to suit Rajini's current stature and his own style of
delivering dialogues.
After a long time, i see Rajini in some beautiful costumes
especially the duet songs and he danced very well in those 2 duet
songs. So kudos to whoever behind that work and to rajini himself.
Rajini picked the ideal actress in Manisha for the heroine role.
There are some scenes inducted just to catch the japan market i
guess which in some way doesnt sound good to me as they play no part
in the story.
Its all about media hype about the movie so far and its the media
who gave such harsh reviews but let me tell u the real test of this
movie's success/failure can be expected in the days to come once the
normal public goes and watch the movie. If it succeeds, i think all
the websites who has done such harsh review may have to eat their
words and appreciate Rajini's stature.
Any way, for ppl like ramadoss and other bloddy politicians,I must
hope that Rajini fans and general public should have patience and
show restraint as Rajini himself suggested. He knows in and out of
whats going on at the moment and time is not far away from Rajini's
strong response.
I wish all success to rajinikanth's future moves.

CP, glad u found the rap finally.
Are Yaar, thanks for the review. I'm quite eager for tomm.
JPM, thx for ur review as well, always a pleasure to read ur posts.
I think I am finally ready to share wat I think abt the Baba songs.
First the constants.
The piece I hate: Baba Kichu Kichuthan
Wat in the world is tis? It started off badly wit the irritating female voice laughing and some weird dialogue and progressed into a song tat somehow jus did settle in. Too bad tat this was the only SPB song. I might grow to like tis song later, but no hope for now. A very annoying song.
The one I love: Baba Theme
So holy & shantifying..transports u to another place and time. Reminds me of some of the background music used during the brahma kumaris meditation sessions. Amazing. Wish tis was developed into a full-length song.
Cudnt help recalling some of the earlier controversies which involved arr's mother.
Now the variables:
Dipu Dipu: Tis song is one of those tat become more & more addictive each time u listen to it. I was prepared to write it off as the second worst, but now I'm starting to like it. I heard VM describing the 3 paruvams etc during the sun tv interview before the audio release. I was wondering how the lyrics wud suit a RK-styled ARR song, but somehow it was done quite gracefully. I have never been fond of "Tamil bhangras" (bhangra hits translated in Tamil, god I hated those), but tis song carried it off. I still feel it was RK-ish enuf. Cant imagine any other TF hero who can carry it off.
Maya Maya: I like this one. Loved the tunes reserved for interludes alone, esp the quiet female-humming pieces. Despite the spectacular way the song started, the ending seemed quite abrupt. One of my most fav ARR songs in recent times.
Rajyama: I surprised myself by liking tis song. Sounded more IR-ish than ARR-ish overall. But some of the instruments used at the background & the prelude give away the ARR identity.
btw, a big question about this song. Why were there 2 versions of the same song in my cd? One version had a prolonged prelude and lasted for only 2:21. The longer one was 4:00. The lyrics were different for both songs. But both were given the same title and had the same singer credited to them. (and Yes, there were 7 tracks in my Baba cd).
Shakti Kodu: No one might guess this is another one of ARR's tunes for lyrics effort. Deserved all of VM's "arumayaaga" praise & alot more. Another one of ARR's best in TFM in recent times.
Of course there was the rap which wasnt in my cd, so I'll be downloading tat one.
This album was different and seems to have demanded songs from ARR other than the usual duet & dance numbers and I mus say ARR did rise for the occasion. Considering his time constraints, the distance, and the different nature of the movie and demands for having to make music to suit a powerful personality, ARR has done a good job.
And here is my opinion about the 3 RK-ARR combinations so far:
1. Baba
2. Muthu
3. Padayapaa.
I genuinely prefer Baba to Padayappa. I did not like Padayappa songs till I watched the movie and even then liked fewer songs in the album than in Baba. I was never hooked to the hits like Suthi Suthi (dont ask me why) & the title song despite their wide popularity. Somehow I feel I can relate more to Baba songs than the other two. I know tis album has been bashed so much by so many people (even ARR fans). Something abt tis doesn surprise me. Like when I eat licorice, I know I like it but also know somehow tat some people wont. But then again, I've always had a diff taste at times (I'm one of the rare ARR fans who never really got to like Humma Humma or Maya Machindra...esp the latter which is simply irritating).
Baba is definitely one my fav ARR albums.

Nice review !
"Baba Kichu..." grows on you....it is one among my favs. Maya is my first choice anyway.
And strange...Humma Humma and Maya Machindra didnt appeal to me much too.
Padayappa songs grew on me only later...when this uncle of mine started playing the Nithyashree number again and again. Amazing Mrdangam rhythms and of course....Nithyshree's voice ! Kicku yerudhe ranks along with "Maya" and "Oruvan Oruvan" as my fav thathuva padalgal.

Ya, youth is in Rakesh. But, I think that was released on that Friday only there. I don't know. There were hardly 5 people there in the line.

Cheenu you got a point. There are some songs when you hear over and over again you develop a sense of addiction to it even if it may not be good.
It happened to me when i was stuck in one of my friend's house during bandh. No one was there.
One tape recorder. There was just one cassette. Nothing else was there. It had songs like 'setupa mathi getupa mathi' something like that. livingston movie. I started liking it after few times. All beat songs would become hit over a period. 'Mandaveliyile oru manushan vandandi' oldie it is still a huge hit. 'Chithada Kattikittu' is still a huge hit.
