  'Alli Sundharavalli(MD IR)'(recycled by IR
  from a Kannada film) to me seems like
  in Sarasangi. I find it similar to 'Raja nodu

  Ramkumar: Thanks for that, I only heard it in the film(I'm not sure of the name) and as you know Charukesi and Sarasangi are only one note different. Is Rajan Odu also in Sarasangi? I never took any notice of the raga, as I vaguely remember one old piece of IR's in the raga and a KJJ varnam. Please tell me the name of the film, so I can buy the cassette. Thanks you again.

  'Rajanodu' is from the film Sathi
  Leelavathi. I think it is in Sarasangi. The original for 'Alli' song is from 'Nammoora mandhara hoove' if I am not mistaken. 'Alli' song was available on the net in one of the sites for latest songs. You can hear this song on the web itself if it is still there.

  Sankaran, are you sure 'yAr thUrigai' is in Sarasangi? I was told that it is some derivative of Simhendra Madhyamam.
  
  Qn. : I have the song 'AdAtha manamum uNdO' on my homepage. I was told it is in Lathangi, but now I hear it is actually Dharini. Does anybody have an idea? What is the scale for Dharini?
  
  What is the raga for 'siRu kUttula uLLa kuyilukku nURu Asai'? Kalyani? And what is the raga for 'indha mAn undhan sondha mAn' from karakAttakkAran?

  G.Ramaswamy: I beleive "indha maan undhan sondha maan" is supposed to be Hindustani Pahadi. I listened to this once in Madras DD's Oliyum Oliyum with the raagam mentioned as Pahaadi.

  If you play "thogai ilamyil" on the keyboard, you can see that it has more than 5 notes. The scale is sarasangi's.

  "Yaar thoorigai" is indeed set to sarasaangi.One IR told this in an interview to Vikatan.
  By the way what is the ragam of "iniya malargal" of Poonthottam?I feel the interludes of this song are expositions of what fusion music should be.

  Guys Can I say something, Many Might be offended by this, but this is the fact.
  The notes formation alone does not become raga, every raga has a saayal...just playing Cmajor scale is not sankarabaranam. Most of the songs here qualify as raga only by notes - that too played for very little duration. Raga has a swarupam.. most of cine songs ?????

  I would differ in your statement to some extent.
  ragas like hindolam,suddha saveri,bhoopalam would sound correct if u played just the arohanam/avarahonam in the keybooard, though one cannot play gamakas& slides in keyboards.But ragas like say bhairavi or todi cannot be expressed in keys because they have the inbuilt gamakams in their structure.In fact there are rules when one would play note flat & when u play with a shake or slide.!!!

  By the way, I heard GURU and there was a fantastic song in Hamsanatham. Apart from Thendral Vandu Ennai Thodu from thendrale ennai thodu and Poongaatru Veesum Ponmaalai Neram(Deva's attempt in a Prabhu film), are there any more Hamsanadham's in TFM? What about Songs: 'Om namaha' from idayathai thirudathe and 'sorgame endralum adhu nammuru' from ooru viTu ooru vandhu
  
  Recently in a Rajkumar Bharathi concert, he sang a very long piece in this ragam and I've heard some other Malayalam songs in it.

  The song, Sorgamae Endraalum is in Hamsanadham. What about Iravum Nilavum Malarattumae (movie:Karnan) ? Is it set to Hamsanadham ? If my observation is correct, I think, not many songs were composed in this raaga before IRs entry to TFM.

  Chandrasekar: I guessed Iravum Nilavum as being of ragam SAARANGA.
  
  Hamsanatham and Saranga can sound similar, but have different swara structure.....

  SNDPM(Prathi)RGM(Suddha)RS
  
  Hamsanadham:
  SRMPNS(D3(Not used a lot in compositions in this raga, as it reduces the sweetness....))

  PVN "adorned" with a new ragam. Dt: Dec 2nd. :
  Dr. Balamuralikrishna is in the limelight again. In a seminar on "National Integeration - Role of music" recently held in Hyderabad, he has composed a kriti Jati samaikhyatha kosam on a new ragam called Nrusimhabharanam, set to Adi tala, dedicated to our PM. P.V. Narasimha Rao, who presided over, comments as: "Though I discourage people requesting to give my name to various projects and programs, here is my friend who tagged this new ragam around my neck" . Sure it's a novel abaranam !
