TFM boasts of several contemporary poets like Bharadhidhasan, Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram, Kannadhasan and Vali (Version I) who penned several songs dealing with social issues such as work ethic (uzhaippu), labor rights, women's position in society, religion, caste, patriotism/ nationalism, money/power/greed and the such. In addition, non-film kavidhaigaL from Bharadhi and Bharadhidhasan have been included in TFM to heighten social awareness.
Let's go ahead and discuss some of these songs--old and new--which address some key social issues even as they were entertaining the masses in the context of the movie situation. Please elaborate on the lyrics and your thoughts on the same as your time would allow.

  Kannadhasan is very good at giving advise for living, thru
  songs. In particular, he has penned a number of songs written
  to lift the soul of a human being who is mentally down with a
  lack of confidence to face life. In these songs, Kannadhasan
  is also quite pragmatic, and so his words have a lot of real
  value. A number of famous personalities (like Vaali) have,
  in fact, gained valuable confidence in their lives from

  Kannadasan's song had caused so much uproar when he decided to throw
  light on a particular society at a particular point of time. The song
  was banned for some time. The song may bnot be relevant today but I am

  Thank you for braving the server problems and sharing your thoughts here. I agree with you that kaNNadhAsan has a more pragmatic approach to his verses which make them more meaningful.
  
  Question: Is kalangAdhiru manamE from the movie "kanniyin kAdhali"? I thought kaNNadhAsan's first movie song was written in 1948 for that movie.

  I am sorry your time & effort in typing 10 good kaNNadhAsan songs went to waste due to the server issues, and even sorrier we didn't get to see them. Thank you for recovering your energies and posting some of them above.
  (I followed the advice of a computer-savvy friend: saved the typed material in a text file during the weekend when the server was down, then cut & pasted it on Monday.)
  
  Some observations & questions:
  1. I had, like many, thought of kaNNadhAsan as specializing mostly in kAdhal pAdalagaL and pattinaththAr-type thaththuvap pAdalgaL. But, as I started exploring and found his verses on direct social issues as labor, caste, religion, socialism, widow remarriage, dowry system, hypocricies toward women etc., I'm starting to see another facet to kaNNadhAsan's thinking and admire the power of his pen even more.
  
  2. "Madras nalla Madras" seems to be true even today [only the city's name has changed :-)]. I did not know there was an uproar about this song; why was it banned?
  
  I echo the sentiments in your concluding statements. Who can argue with the truth in Jayakanthan's compliment to kaNNadhAsan?
