I've been listening to Ivan off and on. Yesterday, I got hold of a good music system and played the album at a loud volume:) It started with Side B and I felt really good listening to the carnatic numbers. They seemed to be proper katcheri numbers, especially with Sudha Raghunathan singing them. I also liked "Appadi Paakkaradhunna..". I sounded great in my system. I was having a great time and I really felt that I should've listened to this quite often...
.. until I heard "Mel Topula" at the end of Side-A. What an ab-burp-t ending to the song!! I feel that song is one of the trashier songs of IR. Other than the catchy beginning, the rest did not "flow" well as it used to in IR songs. the interludes seemed out of place. and that burp in the end is atrocious.
overall, I think it was decent album.

I listened to Ivan songs (if you guys still dun hav mp3, www.tamilterra.com ). Sudha's Ennai enia song is fantastic. Parthipan's vasanam goes along with the song and giv it a feeling. The bit "Enakkinaiyar" is also great. Apidi parkirathinavenam and Thoolu podu thoolu are god numbers( but the instruments remind more of YSR..cant help it.) I didnt like any of the rest songs. For the four songs it really worths. IR good job!

i strongly disagree with suchitra lata's review of IVANN...but again, thats her opinion about the album and she has expressed it genuinely.
However IRs music and Sudha's singing speak well for themselves, I'd say.

Please stop reaching such conclusions. Its unnecessary. Being an ARR fan doesnt mean that one cannot like IR. There will be SEVERAL (note: several) people who like both ARR and IR. Why do hard core IR fans feel so insecure if ARR is praised? Why shouldnt ARR be given the credit he deserves? He is positively an MD of extraordinary talent.
Secondly, I dont think Suchitra Lata is exactly a **fan** of ARR. She has given her view on IVAN, and I disagree as strongly with it as you do. What follows is IMO strictly - if IVAN isnt of the level of Sindhubhairavi, it is definitely not disappointing. If not an epic, it is without doubt a pleasant score with awesome singing..and again Sudha Raghunathan is a long established singer. I disliked Suchitra Lata's statement that:
"Like a nerdy student out to impress the teacher, Sudha reaches breathlessly for stardom". I am sure Sudha isnt trying desparately for stardom or anything such. She is already established as a wonderful voice. This must be just one of the hundred of albums/concerts that were blessed by her voice.
But again, I repeat...that was her opinion and she expressed it genuinely. There is nothing to get so upset about.

Looks like the guys at MusicIndiaonline effortlessly took the songs from Tamilterra.com, which released the Mp3 version a couple of days ago! Soon one can expect raaga.com also posting Real Audio files of the album!
Anyway, now that people outside of India (esp. the US, where it has not been released yet I think) have access to Ivann songs, they can savor the flavor of IR's magic.

I just heard Ivann songs and I've been listening to them for the 7th time or so and am still doing so as I write.
Enna enna seithalum is such a lovely number that I can't simply get over listening to that song over and over again! Sudha has sung well. It probably was child's play for her. Most importantly, this song showcases IR's talent when it comes to handling such heavily Carnatic oriented songs. Mind you, this is no Sindhu Bhairavi where more orchestrization and more light classical oriented were allowed and offered! I felt IR has matured a lot from Sindhubhairavi to Ivann. Look how nicely he has set the swaras and alapanas throughout the song. It is not easy to do that fairly and in a balanced way. I don't know, I feel like writing more and more. Also, as someone earlier pointed out, this song traverses through a bunch of ragams. My prediction is that IR is going to get or atleast contest strongly for the national award. The violins' support to the vocalist was amazing in this song. Very nice coordination indeed! And I too felt that Parthiban's vasanam was coming in my way of enjoyment of the song. OK, enough written about one song!
Another song which I immensely liked was Appadi Parakkuthunna. Nice song, for some reason, reminded of Rajanodu rani vandu serum from Sathi Leelavathi. May be for its freshness and soft melody.
All in all, except for a song or two, this is a good album.

Ivan is one of the better albums to have come from IR in recent times. However, I felt overall the album could have sounded better for the general listener if instead of SR someone else had sung one of the three songs and if all the three CM songs didnt have any unnecessary interruptions(parthiban's dialogue, SR going offkey purposely etc.), which were perhaps due to Parthipan's kaivarisai. Hence, the songs are robbed somewhat off their impact. I didnt quite like the recording as I heard it from the mp3 files. SRs voice seems to be coming from a well and the accompanying instruments seem to be dominating.
But, these dont take anything away from the creative effort that has gone into making these songs.
Appadi paakrathenna was catchy but Maathangis's rendition esp. in higher octaves was nasal and bad(sounds like Subha) and the prelude for the song which sounded very pleasing/promising seemed disjointed w.r.t the pallavi
Kaumudi, IR has handled such songs even before Sindhubhairavi and during that time. Have you listened to "Isaiyarasi ennalum naane" from Thai Mookambikai which is a relatively "heavier" number? Sindhubhairavi's songs were tuned keeping the movie theme/scenes in mind and they fitted perfectly, IMO.

You are right Maathangi could have done better.
Ennai Yenna seithalum is a wonderful number. It is more classical.

I forgot about Thai Moogambigai. Thanks for correcting. Regarding Sindhubhairavi: I agree absolutely, that the music was more than apt for the movie. But the absolute music itself was not very Carnaticish barring a song or two if you will! That's all I meant.

Opening of Appadi Pakradenna is an inspiration of Kaleidoscope Of Mathematics, soundtrack from the movie Beautiful mind. Just listen to both. You will find them identical.
