I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!
VaniJayaram.com - A site that has lots of info and songs of VJ.

Aha, you made me feel like I was actually watching the program. Romba thanks to you and also to Kalai who brought this topic up.

Kaumudi, you're welcome. The programme was too good, and in my excitement, I seem to have made more than my usual share of typos: low, soulful song instead of slow, soulful song, and violist instead of violinist--
Suresh, yes, I should try to watch SJ, PS and JC episodes as well. While I knew that this programme was on, I couldn't watch it as its timings clashed with 'Alaigal' on Sun. Oh the sacrifices we make for the sake of domestic peace ;- ). Now that those waves have finally receded for good, I can step into the cool waves of Sangeetha sagaram!

Saravanan -
Warning: This post is loaded with envy :-)
Thank you very much for the moment-by-moment description of the programme. Your (and kalai's) briefing on the episode is the next best thing to actually watching it on TV. And what a next best thing it is!
The Gita Govindam album is available on the website. Pakhawaj is a percussion instrument, much like the mridangam. It is somehwere between the chenda and the tabla. You will discover its distinct sound when you listen to any song from this album. Kelucharan Mahapatra is a fine exponent of this instrument. Of course, he is also a celebrated Odissi guru himself. The collaboration on GG was sincere and inspiring. Hori songs are also good examples of VJs braj/hindi grasp. BM is the real surprise - dancer AND singer (cf. an interesting contrast might be found in placing VJ/BM from Hori and KS/BM from Devdas. The arrangement is the difference between "classical" and "pop-classical." The poet for both songs is Bindadin Maharaj, Birju M's brother.)
Hum Mein Aur Thum Mein Koyi Baat Nahin Hai Lekin
Log Tho Jhoote Fasane Hi Ghada Karthe Hain
Milne Jhulne Mein Koyi Harj Nahin Hai Aisa
Log Dil Ko Nahin Chehron Ko Pada Karthe Hain
Nam Uravil Oru Kallamum Illai
Sollubavar Sollum Kadhaigalukku Alavillai
Sandhithu Pazhaguvadhil Oru Kutramum Illai
Mugaththai Padippor, Manadhai Padippadhillai
It is a lovely song.
Thanks for bringing this song to mind. I have not listened to it in at least 15 years!
It would be nice if somebody could compile a list of VJ Malayalam song. Most of the songs you mention in your coverage seem new to me...
My hope is somebody from here will :-)

Yes, we need to archive and preserve these singing institutions. Contributions of singers like PS, SJ, VJ (and others) to Film Music are treasures one should never lose.

For some nice Malayalam songs, visit this website:
http://www.malayalavedhi.com/
( click on "Music". Enter the password 1234 mentioned on the site, and you get one whole song list. There is an edit box where you can choose the singer's name - type in Vani Jayaram (not Jairam). And you'll get a list of 20+ songs by her. I tried hunting for the songs mentioned by Saravanan on the musicindiaonline.com website, but they don't seem to have been uploaded there).
There is a nice song by Vani, which is tuned like a ghazal. It reminds me of "yaaradhu sollamal" and "meghame meghame...". The song is "RandiLayum.....". Then there is the sweet, soulful, serene devotional "Thiruvona PuLari Than".

Naaz:
If you don't mind, here are some question for your interview :-). I guess Kaumudi and Saravanan have asked most of the things I would have wanted to know, but anyways:
1) Does she have any plans of singing songs of a genre she has hitherto not touched? (say, opera - it would be wonderful since she does sound mesmerizing at high octaves and she has done a couple of songs that seem "opera-like").
2) Today, there is tremendous craze for western music, especially pop music and Indian instruments are being replaced by western ones. Inspite of all this, VJ has willingly and consciously never let go of her devotional and semiclassical repertoire. Does she feel this trend of increased westernization will reverse itself one day? Also, what, as per her, were the causes of the trend - was it a shift in the themes on which movies were based? (Today, we have an overdose of "underworld" movies).
3) I had somewhere heard that she is ultimately planning to set up a music academy to teach younger children Indian music/arts. Could she let us know a little about this plan of hers?
4) What were her experiences while recording "Ezhu Swarangalukkul"? I ask this, because the song has an endearingly plaintive feel to it. It was also her first National award winner. I am sure it is one of her favourite songs.
5) Her experiences while working/ singing with some classical maestroes - examples are duets with Balamuralikrishna, with Kunnakudi Vaidyanthan, with Kelucharan Mahapatra, with Ananda Shankar, with Veena maestro "Chitti Babu" (I don't know the songs she has recorded for the latter, but I have read about it somewhere - don't recall exactly where). I ask this because a very large (maybe largest) part of her repertoire is classical-based.
6) Something about the music training she received from all her gurus - starting from her mother.
7) Her favorite classical singers/ instrumentalists.
8) Her work as a music director (with reference to the devotionals to Lord Muruga that she composed, as Saravanan mentioned) or as a lyricist. I have also heard that she greatly admires classical dancing.
9) Some details about her work in Oriya or any other regional language.
10) Any unfulfilled dreams (probably similar to #1).
Obviously, some of these questions overlap with each other and with the first interview. And these were a few random questions. Maybe these could serve as a started for someone who can come up with better-framed ones.
Ciao.

Av-
Thanks for providing the link to the malayalam songs. I will check it out. It was the songs that Saravanan mentioned that intrigued me...but you confirm that MOI and the malayalavedhi site don't have them?
I will copy the questions and include them in the list so far. Overlap is unavoidable, but the important thing is to have diversity and curiosity in the questions. Thanks again.
To all those who have submitted their lists:
Any ideas on how the process of choosing questions ought to be conducted? I have one simple idea, which I will share with you once I've heard your suggestions.
Keep them coming! (June 30 deadline.)

Naaz- some of the songs that were sung in yesterday's episode are quite old, I think. The local Radio Stations here play 'Mani muzhangi', and 'Thedi thedi gnaan alaignu' frequently. I'll try to get more details about them.
Av/Kalai- Thanks for those links.

Romba Nandri!
Nadan Pattile Maina and Ayilam Padadhu Penne are still fresh in my mind. Now that you have provided the links, I will listen to them again. (MIO has some very poor quality files. But can't blame them either, these audio tracks were not preserved well. We should be thankful that they are there in the first place!)
I'd really be interested in listening to "Dhoom Dhoom Tana..." Please post the link if possible.
Thanks, Saravanan. Look forward to the details.

Raagam was the remake (?) of Anuraag, I think. The tamizh version was Neelamalargal.
"Omanathingal Patchi..." was also a fine solo by PS. The LM version of this song in the hindi film is to this day a classic lullaby.

I don't know if MIO has this, but please check and listen. It is a beautiful song.
