I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Kalai -
Thank you for your post. I'd like to see the Asianet programme, but that is not possible where I am. It sounds like a well-done in-depth show.
If I can make a request: Could you please give us a para or few para highlights of the show - particularly VJs views on composers, colleagues, song recording incidents...?
I am sure other members of this forum will also find it interesting.
I hope you can oblige! Thanks in advance.
(Nottobemissed: Neel D has added a solo by VJ from Meenatchi Thiruvilaiyadal at the website. It is an absolute tour de force. Give it a listen.)

That was lame! You indeed are entitled to your opinion (which is highly subjective in this case). But if you are genuinely interested and are open for some opinion-changing, then please do listen to some of Chitra's Malayalam songs as av points out. She has some very good numbers with an interesting combination of melody and complexity. After listening to a good bunch of them, let us know if you still feel the same way as you do now.
FYI, many of Chitra's good songs were discussed in this thread: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/3337.09.36.14.html
MS, I believe, had a lot of links of her songs.

I'd like to request as well along with Naaz - could you please provide some highlights, perhaps some interesting tidbits of the discussion/conversation of VJ's program. Thanks a lot.

I would love to see some excerpts of those VJ episodes in Asianet here in this forum. I was talking to her 2 weeks back and she told me about this series in Asianet that features her every Friday. Unfortunately, I am also one among the many who are geographically misplaced for such great things. I wish I could get hold of some cassette recordings of those episodes sometime in future. I am also looking for something about the interviews on the web but all I got so far is ZILCH.
Folks, I briefed her about the upcoming interview and the the questions being carefully brain-picked here in this forum ( though I did not reveal anything about the questions or the thoughts of the fans here, I hinted that it might be a lot more techinical than the first one...call me a professional for being true to newtfmpage.com fans). She sounded excited and is looking forward to all those questions ( 'yenna kekaraa nnu paarkalaam' - thats what she said).
And regarding the Asianet programme, can someone please list out the songs that VJ sang live for the interview ?

I don't believe there is any weekly synopsis of Sangeetha Sagaram on the net. I doubt such programmes get reviewed by TV critics as well. If you do come across any such information - whenever - please do keep us posted.
Regarding the interview, there have been questions from three members in this forum so far, and that's a start. However, I've been holding out for more input from others. If the enthusiasm and interest is not palpable, then I would rather not impose an artiste of VJs stature on an indifferent audience.
At least, that's the way I feel about it.
If this venture remains a non-starter, perhaps when I visit India sometime in the future, I'd request some of her time to sit-down and talk about her music journey - on video. If and when that happens, I'll also transcribe it and submit it to a journal/magazine.
When you have a word with her again, please let her know that I am grateful for her unreserved enthusiasm to my request. I will also make the time to drop her line in the next few weeks.
(FYI: VJ was the first artiste I interviewed during my early days as a freelance journalist. She had just been awarded Cinema Express's Best Female Playback Singer for her song in the film Manidhan, and the paper wanted a feature for their Saturday Page. I was chosen for the simple reason that I was familiar with her work in Tamizh/Telugu/Hindi/Urdu and Braj. The audio interview on the website was the second time I spoke to her - after nearly a dozen years - and much to my (pleasant) surprise, I found her to be just as gracious and astute as she was during our first meeting.)

Kaumudi,
I have told that Chitra is competent!Ok I will try to catch up on her malayalam songs. Opinions are always subjective. if it matches with a second person's then it becomes objective! Ok I was just kidding!

Basically I am not a malayalee. I acn understand. In case, if U find something, pl. forgive.
1. she was introduced by Music director M.K.Arjunan in Malayalam . when U see Malayalam industry for all MD’s KJY will be the lead singer. But, choice of female singers used to be different. The famous combinations are “G.Devarajan, Vayalar(lyrics), KJY, PS “ , “M.S.Baburaj,P.Bhaskaran,KJY,SJ” & “M.K.Arjunan, KJY,VJ”. M.K.Arjunan-VJ produced lots of hits.
2. KJY introducer her to Arjunan master.
3. MD. Raghavan master is known for typical Malayalam folk songs with lots of hits like “kuyilina thedi”, “kayalarukil”, given many songs to VJ and she could produce it with Malayalee nativity. I will list the VJ songs whenever I find free time.
4. she praised V.Dakshinamurthy swamigal (MD) for his compositions using Carnatic music. VJ sung very complicated compositions under his music. She praised a song by him a duet with PS, in which he used four ragas in the charanam, the portion was sung by PS. She praised PS and told “I haven’t got that portion”. She also sing that portion a bit.
5. She had a high praise on “salail choudry” for his complicated compositions and she told it is a challenge every time. Krishna Chandran who was the interviewer tried to sing one of the humming which goes as a wave from low to high notes and comeback . VJ repeated it with the beautiful resonant voice. I haven’t heared it before. I was really impressed the way she sung it. Excellent one. Someone can share.
6. She had worked with all great musicians and atleast a hit song with everyone like madan mohan ,shankar jaikishan, Naushad, salil like many. She is well trained in both Hindustani and karnatic music.
7. Almost thirteen years she was leading at malayalam industry and not even once she was awarded.
8. She had hits in almost all the major Indian languages. She can do a full carnatic or Hindustani concert.
9. Thrice she got national award and twice it is for telugu movies and in both she given voice for children. She sing the “swathikiranam” song at very ease. “Inba then vandhy payuthu kathinile” enbargale .. appadi irunthathu.
10. Compared with other singers in the programe she come with good preparation and shared some good info without hurting others. Even now, her voice is so sweet and having complete control in voice. We don’t feel much strain in her voice. She rendered "Bolure" from guddi with the same expressions. too good.
I will update soon with more info.

It was nice of you to heed my (and Kaumudi's) request. Thanks for the detailed and concise account.
I have not heard too many VJ-KJY songs except for the songs that were show on "regional" OO on TV. It would great if somebody could give us a list of the duo's songs for MK Arjunan.
Even that PS-VJ malayalam duet would be a find. Does anyone know of a link?
Please keep us updated. TV parththa madhiri irundhadhu unga post!

Thanks Kalai- for sharing wonderful information about the programme. Your post prompted me to watch the VJ episode today, and I am typing this even as the episode is nearing the end-
Krishnachander (of Yetho Moham fame) was the interviewer, and he seemed quite knowledgeable about VJ’s works in Malayalam. There was a brief recap of the earlier episodes- fleeting glimpses of Vani singing a lot of Malayalam songs ‘Aashada maasam, aatmavin moham’, ‘Dum tana tana tana, ninde ninde tala’, ‘Ninde kaiyil poothiri’, ‘Ninde gnaan endu vilikkum’, ‘Seemanda rekhayil chandanam saathiye’, ‘Ilam mannil neerottam’, ‘Kanni poovu, chundi paalu thenu’, Guddi songs ‘Hum ko man ki shakthi dena’ and the classic ‘Bole re papi hara’ and our own ‘Naane Naanaa yaaro thaana’—made me realize with remorse all that I had missed—
Vani was her usual courteous self- looking simple and elegant – she ages gracefully, though her voice is young as ever—
( Let me add a caveat here that I don’t know Malayalam- though I am in the Gulf where knowledge of Malayalam is considered more vital than knowledge of Arabic, I still remain a Malayala karaiyoram Thamizh paadum kuruvi- so my impressions may not be a perfect review of the proceedings--)
KC asked her about her non-film albums. Vani spoke briefly about such works in Gujarati, Oriya, Bengali and Tamil. She went on sing ‘Malayala mannil’ (oh, ‘The Voice!) a song that formed part of an album on Onam, that was composed by V Dakshinamoorthi. She then spoke about her Tumri, Bhajans with Birju Maharaj, and Holi ke gaaney. KC expressed his surprise that Birju Maharaj was a good singer as well- Vani smiled and sang ‘Kaisey keh jaavoon, Shyam roke dagariyaa, arre Shyam roke dagariyaa’.
She then related the details of the Geeta Govind album that she sang, and expressed her joy that Kelucharan Mahapatra played the Pakhawaj (?) for it. She broke into ‘Anila tharala kuvalaya nayaneney’ which had an amazing alaap as well- Her graceful gestures with her hands as she sang these lovely lines prompted KC to ask if the album was meant for dance performances- Vani gave a dazzling smile as she replied in impeccable English ‘Any one would feel like dancing when they hear this’. True!
The programme had some young singers singing some famous Malayalam songs of Vani- ‘Thedi thedi gnaan alaingnu, paadi paadi naan thirangnu’, ‘Mani muzhangi, kovil mani muzhangi;, and ‘Nanda suthavara thava chalam’- the beauty of the songs made me imagine how Vani would have rendered them—
Vani then spoke about her ‘spiritual bent of mind’ and expressed her joy at performing at Badrinath twice as a guest of the U.P. Govt., Swami Haridas Sangeet Samaroh at Vrindavan, Ganga Mahotsav at Varanasi, Panch kula at Haryana and at Puri Jaganath Festivals. She then broke into a lovely Malayalam song ‘Nayaka- Paalaka- Manuja sneha Gayaka’ – (KC sang a few line s along with her)- Vani really enjoyed this one- she smiled, closed her eyes and raised her hands as she sang the lines, recalling each nuance effortlessly- she then praised Shyam who was the composer of the song.
KC spoke about her debut in Tamil- the SMS song that never came out—Vani recalled that her first recording was a Bhajan on 22. 12. 1970, ‘Hum ko man ki shakthi’ was recorded in April, 1971, and ‘Bole re papi hara’ in August, 1971. (What a memory!)
The finale for today’s episode was a mesmerizing Gazhal- ‘Hum mein aur tum mein koyi bath nahee hai, lekin--’- it was a low, soulful song, sung with perfect understanding and subtle enjoyment- Vani’s gestures to the accompanying musicians was a treat to watch- the line ‘Log dil ko nahi, chehron ko pada karte hain’ lingers in memory as I am typing—
The surprise was Vani was quite generous with her smiles- which is really remarkable- I have seldom seen a photo of her with more than half a smile! The programme was thoughtfully interspersed with some snapshots- Vani receiving an award from the hands of Sanjeev Kumar, a shot of Vani receiving the highest honour from Neelam Sanjeeva Reddi, another one –this time from a beaming R Venkatraman, Vani at a recording with MSV and director K Shankar—
Some vivid images linger on—a very young pony-tailed violist who involuntarily closed his eyes in bliss as Vani gave a humming in the last Gazhal—KC nodding in whole-hearted appreciation as he heard ‘Manuja sneha Gayaka’--a b&w snapshot of a young Vani sitting on some steps and signing an autograph—
Kalai, thanks once again--!

FYI, PS and SJ have already appeared in this programme. This is a rare one for the archives, if one is not curmudgeonly about set aesthetics..
As I type, I'm listening to the epic 'malligai en mannan' on Suryan FM's 'ninaithale inikkum'. I very often temper my cynicism of present day singers with the thought that we're languishing in the dregs of time, but this one!
