Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi can’t stop raving about the songs of Mani Ratnam’s Yuva. “A.R. Rahman and Mani Sir and dynamite together,” says Vivek on the sets of Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria’s Masti, and adds, “The six songs Rahman has recorded for the film are mind-blowing.”

Ajay Devgan, his co-star in Yuva and Masti, uses the same words to describe them. Incidentally, when the film was launched earlier this year, Mani Ratnam had decided not to have a single song in it.

Vivek also feels that Abhishek Bachchan’s is the best role and best performance in the film. “That guy’s career will take off in a big way after Yuva,” predicts Vivek.

  3. Sandai Kozhi
  Another song that blew me away after a couple of listenings..
  It begins w/ Madhushree in a typical village feel - clay pots, Bullock cart sounds, the works! ;)
  She sounds exactly like Sadhana Sargam! That's a definite plus! She pronounces exactly like Sadhana! There go her rave reviews! ;)
  The part that got me hooked to the song was "Konjam neram ennai kollaya". Enchanting.
  But then, as u rightly pointed out, the "Ayya" bit does sound like "Chinna Thai aval" in Dalapathi. That shook me up quite a bit :( . She then progresses to higher pitches.. w/ an attempted village kinda pronunciation. Her modulations are great. Voice is good. The tune, Amazing. Very very hummable. Then comes Rahman! He fits back into the mould that I talked of in the previous song w/ complete ease.. and what a cameo it proves to be.
  On the whole, this is the perfect response to people who are looking for melodies.
  
  4. Dol dol
  No. It isn't a DJ's work. No. It isn't cacophonic (Well, not for me!). It is Rahman dishing out a very experimental and creative and, looking at the response it's getting, a successful number.
  
  Shaheen's there just for the voice modulations. Right at the beginning, Rahman makes u sit up and take notice. He effortlessly gives u a transition from Shaheen's voice to an electronic instrument. The drums begin here. And loop throughout the song. Blaaze begins w/ his "Dol dol" bit.. and gets looped throughout the song! :) Kiddin, if u notice, every 10 seconds has a slight variation. SOmething or the other is made different. Be it the singing, the beats in the background, Shaheen weaving in and out of the song. Maxwell w/ his trombone (It's a trombone isnt it?) starts it out like a James Bond tune, and continues in a better vein.
  The tune where Blaaze sings his "Deega deega" bit sounds catchy.. The beats start rising feverishly. Stop. Shaheen is still left modulating. And all of a sudden, the beats change into more of a dappaanguthu!
  
  A very experimental piece from Rahman. I guess, it's gonna be like a theme for Maddy in the film.
  
  5. Nenjam Ellam
  I was wondering what Rahman's upto here, w/ Adnan in the credits. Adnan begins w/ his trademark half-scream-half-yodel. Sujatha takes over. God, how I've missed her voice. Inspite of being the second "melody" in the film, it doesnt have Rahman's slow piano bits, nor Naveen's flute. It makes up w/ a very brisk rhythm, and funky sounds here and there. (No I don't mean Adnan!) :)
  The interludes too flow w/ the pace. Adnan sings the whole second stanza. He's improved a great deal! He doesnt have Rahman singing in another layer like he had in Boom Boom. The beats and strings in the second interlude are brilliant. Sujatha continues in style.
  The song ends w/ both of them singing a couple of lines over and over again.
  Very Catchy.. along w/ Sandai Kozhi, should hope to satisfy ppl who are very choosy about Rahman's melodies.
  
  Then comes the song that's going to become an absolute rage in discotheques and at home alike.
  
  6. Fanaah
  
  No. it isn't "Pannaal" :) I guess fanaah's a sufi word.
  When i first read the lyrics around a month back, I had no clue how Rahman could actually create a tune for this. He surprises everybody by going about it differently and creating a tune "around" the lyrics!
  Rahman had experimented w/ trance in Kadhal Virus and Tehzeeb. He takes it to a different plane in this song! And he's done an amazing job w/ the singing too. His voice sounds different again!
  Shalini Singh gets her first song w/ Rahman. She doesnt have a lot to "sing" anyways. Jus rapping and chanting. She does it w/ finesse.
  Brilliant beats, Exotic strings, Energetic singing.. this song's going to be on the lips of every young listener.
  At exactly 2:00 minutes, Vairamuthu's job is done! It's all upto Rahman to carry the song for another 2 and a half minutes!
  He does it w/ absolute flair w/ his alaaps. Shalini's left singing her lines, but it's Rahman who steals the show.
  
  one word (Though I tend to overuse it, this is the song that deserves the word) - BRILLIANT!
  
  
  Trust Mani Ratnam to bring out Rahman's creative genius. This album could well go on to rock India! I've always felt a few ARRFs tend to go overboard w/ praises for Rahman. But I dont feel the least bit apologetic for doing it here. Awesome.

  The album clicks instantly w/ young folx, and takes a little time to rev up for the err.. not as young ones! ;)

  Im sorry I dint wanna confuse you ppl with the "Yuva" cast again...but then this article on Hindustan times says tht...the shot (presumably the last one from the film)which was taken in Bhopal assembly included Ajay Devgan,Vivek Oberoi & Om puri..in which Om puri juz had one line to speak.
  
  Now wht confuses me is ...was it Om Puri all the way long & not Amrish Puri?I'll probably hafta wait for the movie's release to know exactly who is acting in this film!!!!
