i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.
1.Vedha:i know he always go for a hindi tune in his films(mostly for Modern theatres). No alterations! he just copy a full hindi song !
best examble:Manam ennum medai mele(Gil tho ye kulu yahag)
2.MSV: i hear that(from Sujatha's book"Neerkumiligal") "thulluvatho elamai" was a song copied from english to almost all famous indian langages. Is there any other songs MSV copied?
3.Illayaraja:Even the GOD of MUSIC Raja sir did some thing like this.He just used that "I love you"style from BOneyM Sunny for "darling darling"in priya.I have heard a totally same song like "Kanavu kanum valkkai yavum" in Hindi also.(i forgot the film).
and i dont know who is the MD for the song"ehu pal vadiyum mugam! ethai parpathu than sugam".But i heard the same song in an english film.
4.ARR : i was told from my friends that he did copying intelligently.drum beats and some music styels from cassettes like "enigma, ace of base".And the humming before the song "thillana thillana" is a 100%copy from the film"the island of Dr.Mozeru".
5.SA Rajkumar : a lot of help from hindi! best example "mallikai puve malligai puve parthaya" from "didi tera thevaru thevana"
5.DEVA:hee..hee..the master.(better we see how many songs he did on his own instead of seeing how many songs he copied!)
like wise there is a lot of songs are copied from Tamil to Hindi also..
Now its your turn friends....

Prabhu,
A better way would have been for some of the mags to expose this. they can start perhaps a weekly section in one of the sat TVs or tamil mags and devote some time for copies. The sat TVs
can play the original and the copied song and create some entertainment by pointing out the similiarities for the viewers to see while at the same time not blatantly saying that this was copied from the original and so on. But I dont think it would be done as these sat TVs thrive on the cine filed for their money.
But I support your idea that anyone who has a decent knowledge about music can with a help from a lot of different sources churn out tunes 1000 times better than what Deva and Co provide.
these guys have brought down the music standards badly(and perhaps even worse) as compared to bollywood music.

Sorry for the big digression folks
vijay,
I thought of that Sat TV idea also it is a good idea, but u see even the Sat TVs general approach (by way of their standards) to programmes for the common people is not with a sense of responsibility (I mean this because of the enormous potential of this TV/radio media in India, why even here in US), the programmes are horrible with no intention to bring more knowledge/enlightenment/good and decent entertainment to the paamara makkal, (it is amazing inspite of Sat. boom people continue to watch mediocre programmes encouraging them to produce more of these mediocre programmes),
It is also true that even cine field is doing good because of Sat TVs on the other hand, because the music album sales, more crowds to cinema halls, more number of movies (most of them crappiest anyway)made each year proves this.
But I am yet to see one single entertainment program on these Sat TVs with good taste and good approach.(Pongalukku Sun TV le 1 Rajini padam na, Vijay TV naan enna kammiya 2 rajini + 1 kamal padam podrenran, adukku follow up Sun TV 2 more Rajini padam + some current star's Sodappal interview etc... these kind of stuff)
We all know how good are the top 10 song lists in SUN TV or any other TV, based on some stupid surveys, 4 sometimes 6 out of top 10 are by some mediocre MDs songs (which sometimes are not bad indeed at first listening , only to be noted in few days that they were outright copies )
How many times these Sat TV programmes have reviewed Rajini's crappy movies as bad ( I meant the real bad ones, though I like his movies obviously not all), how many times the top 10 movies reviewer has criticised (thus given negaive publicity to movies which were not supposed to be hits like "kaadal desam, surya vamsham, unnidathil ennai koduthen lot of these movies were absolute average or below average (as there were similar movies in past at least the latter 2, i still could n't understand how the very mediocre Kaadal Kottai was a mega success, fetching National Award to the director , his other movie "vidukathai was much better,
I think Sreekanth and TFM Dfers if you really put some thinking you can do this, ( Can make money too...ha...ha) as you seem to have base line connection with cine field people. The whole thing should be anonymous with some unique vague anonymous name, once the movie/album is released with lot of promo, people should start talking "yaaro pudu aaluppa MD edo "Anonymous" peru nalla potturikkammpa, for the first time you can add some techno pop songs also lifted from here with the usual modified masala flavour to get the immature teenage audience like how ARR did in kaadal desam, even the Jennifer Lopez's latest hits with some so called INSPIRATION and CCP (cut, copy &paste) of MSV old tunes and some great readily available rhythm clips are enough to fool our makkal, once everybody believed that they were original and made the album a great success (if money is not your intention) you can anounce publicly ( with an intention to expose people and educate lay people), how people fall trap to the so called INSPIRATION in a pseudo manner, if you do not want to go and anounce the public the underlying secrets you can flourish till they tolerate and eventually make you go public automatically (which I hope will soon happen to all those cheaters)

Some more recycling by IR (atleast the opening lines)
Machchanai paatheenagaLa (annakkiLi) - Manondum padhaiyilae (kavikkuyil)
Mamavukku kudumma (punnagai M)- MalayaLak karaiyoram (Rajadhi Raja)

Ravy,
reg. your 2 songs
1. the similiarity is just with the dappanguthu beat, that's all, the tune is entirely different.
2. the words "mamvukku kuduma" are perhaps 70% similar to 'malayalak karaiyoram' and the similiarity ends there. not strong enough to even call it as a recycle!!

Listen to Santana's song "Maria, Maria" sounds like Maria, Maria from Kadhalar Dinam. Who copied whom? I leave it to the discussion forum :)

MS:
I thought that Nadodi Thendral song is similar to
'kuyilaaga naanirundhenna'. (I think Shashi mentioned
that sometime ago.)
Vijay:
Ceylon Radio used to have some programme about
song similarities. They discontinued it. I also
remember SUN TV having made one special 30 mins
programme on 'copying'. (I remember they showed
the 'autokaaran' song and 'Major Chandrakanth'
song.)

I was referring only to the rhythm. IMO, they have a very high similarity. I did not match the tunes though you can sing one song for the other as they seem to be in SankaraabaraNam !!

Stravinsky himself was accused of passing off Russian folk tunes as his own.

Coming back to pastorale and mugam title score,
did anyonce notice any resemblence? I couldnt figure out any. srik, how does later parts of pastorale go? similar to mugam?. All i can say is both were equaly good.
Regarding TV shows on copying..
there was mixed song in 'namma neran' in sunTV.
The mixed parts of SAR's movies (suryavamsam, that karthik-roja movie and vanathai pola, kannupa pogudathai ya)..lol the mix was so
seam less. There were text comments running underneath... commenting on similarity in Tune,
dress, mannerism, choreography, background..
It was a funny handwork, much more than just telling by words!. I Wonder if they will try for other MDs in coming weeks.
one potential show they can pointout copying can be YugiSethu's talkshow, 'naiyandi darbar'. May be he will take it up if some one hints him. But he keeps away from movies from talking movies some reason. ( But the show's format itself is copy of US late night talk shows :( :P )
