Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us.   A Great one from PS/TKR.Easily will be among PS's Top 10.Marakkap pada vendiya padathil marakka mudiyatha paadal.Good choice.
  
  Vagadeeswari being a(34 th) Melakartha ragam is a sampoorna ragam.But this song without M1 should be considered a janya ragam of Vagadeeswari.The R3 note occurs noticably in 2 or 3 places (kurai theerumo for eg) the song can be grouped as well under valaji with occasional R3.(sa ga pa dha ni sa -derived from 28 Harikambodhi).A classic composition sung brilliantly by PS.the interludes are imaginative.TKR did have a good start.But later the race became one of Schumacher's.
  
  TKR's subsequent ventures had fewer such ragam experiments i think.Even MSV Vivadhi swara usages were minimal when compared to IR.
  
  the word Vagadeeswari denoting goddess Saraswathi was used in PS's immortal bhakthi song "maNikka veenai yeandhum".
  
  For Savithri I cannot think of anyone other than PS.But Devika is one nice face for whom both PS and SJ's voice matched quite well on-screen.She was an oasis during the Saroja devi period. Kanaga appa jaadaya?
  
  I heard the story line is from Hindi.Can someone confirm?Shades of Thirumbi paar too?

  "Vasantha kaalam varumo"- NDA,SMK,Naidugarukkellam konjam kashtam thaan. Heard this classic song more from my mom's hum than the radio. Another jewel that shines in PS's crown.

  Having myself written a few tunes in raaga Vaagadheeshwari, I couldn't resist listening to this song. I must say an expert usage of the raaga; but judging the above comments, the song may also be set to Valaji (I have written a tune in that raaga too, one that I am especially fond of).

  There was also a story that Karunanidhi was in search
  of a nice song to serve as a backbone of the movie and
  could not find it ... in the middle of the movie
  making .. he also ran into problems with the producer
  and director as each was wanting to take it in another
  direction ... exasperated he told them orru kagidham
  odam kallala azhinju porappla naamum povom! .. He then
  used that feeling of rage to convert it to the song ..
  
  
  Read it in Kumudam or some magazine almost 40 years

  Great song bb and team. KJY's humming and the rest of it !!!! Superb !!!
  One of the very few good offerings from TKR. He had refrained from treading the Harikamboji and Karaharapriya pathway that MSV had a strong leaning towards, typically for a run of the mill situation and tried diff ragas like the one for 'pOthumO intha idam', 'kAthalan vanthAn kaN vazhi sendrAn' etc.
  'malarai pOndra paruvamE' is a pretty decent song by TKR.

  - This wonderful song is sung by Ghantasala and Bhanumathi. Music by MSV-TKR (the credits might have said C.R.Subburaman).
  
  - Yesterday, we saw TKR's solo career. Today, the song featured is one of MSV-TKR's oldest. MSV was assisting CRS at the time, and composed this song when CRS was ailing and was not able to complete the task. Along with Panam, this film was one of the earliest for the duo.
  
  - Chandi Rani was made in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. MSV-TKR were not credited in the hindi version.
  
  - This song is more famous as the precursor to 'vaa veNNilaa unnaith thaanE vaanam thEduthE' from mellath thirandhathu kadhavu. Apparently, IR and Gangai Amaran wanted MSV to compose a song similar to the Ghantasala one.

  Good selection bb, Vaan Meedhiley surely is a trip on a time machine. It is a nostalgic black and white trip (for me) to an artificial garden, apparently a stage set, with the hero and heroine are singing this song walking over a small bridge.This is what SOTD is all about.

  bb: Good choice! This was one of my favourite songs in my younger days! A clean version is available in smashits.com (Bhanumathi II). I think the lyrics given has some mistakes!

  Great song bb. Bhanumathi needs to be explored further. Just the other day I was listening to her collection and was amazed at the number of good songs she has put out that I had taken for granted. In some of her songs like, "Mayangaatha manam yaavum mayangum" I couldn't even tell it was her; she sounds very young in many of her earlier hits. Of course, her turn as an MD was remarkable as well. An ashtaavadhaani compared to today's kashtaavadhaanis. (The latter word is a great coinage by a friend that I had to steal and spread.)

  MSV has reminisced on this song many times. He recollected that when he composed the tune, the Hindi lyricist (the film was a trilingual) struggled for 3 days to come up with an apt pallavi. To help him out, MSV sang a ‘dummy’ line of his own: ‘Chanda talae muskuraayi jawaniyaan’. The lyricist jumped with joy and exclaimed ‘Yehi na mukhda!’, and came up with the second line ‘hoton mein aa gayi dil ki kahaaniyaan’.
  
  The song became popular in all 3 languages:
  
  ‘Vaan meethile inba then maari peyuthe’ in Tamil- Ghantasala & Bhanumathi (Lyrics: K.D.Santhanam)
  ‘O taaraka navvulela nanu ganee’ in Telugu- Ghantasala & Bhanumathi (Lyrics: Samudrala Sr)
  ‘Chanda talae muskuraayi jawaaniyaan’ in Hindi- Talat Mahmood & Bhanumathi (Lyrics: Vishvamitra Adil)
  
  Bhanumathi created history when Bharani Pictures’ Chandi Rani was released in all 3 languages on 28th August 1953. She scripted, directed, acted (in a dual role) and sang in all 3 versions. The film was produced by her husband P.S.Ramakrishna Rao.
  
  Besides Bhanumathi, the film starred NTR, S.V.Rangarao, Relangi & others. As is her wont, Bhanumathi presided over the proceedings in the twin roles of Champa and Chandi. As the courageous Chandi, she even got some amazing fight scenes. NTR had nothing much to do in the role of Kishore with whom both Champa and Chandi fall in love. (Of course, Chandi conveniently dies in the end)
  
  Among the other songs in the Tamil version, I have only heard a Bhanumathi solo: ‘Nila nila odi vaa nillamal odi vaa, neril kandathellam nee solla vaa’. In the PS fans thread, friends have mentioned that PS had sung a short humming in Chandi Rani. (PS made her full-fledged debut as a singer in the same year in ‘Petra Thaai’)

  saravanan,udhaya: Bhanumathi was one of the few who could sing and act in those days. Varalakshmi was another one. I think T.R.Rajakumari also sang. We all know about MS,MLV,Vasanthakokilam and Sundarambal. They belong to a different class. Bhanumathi has also sung a few carnatic compositions -Ethaavunara and Nagumomu come to my mind. MGR appointed her principal of the music college in Madras surprising the carnatic elite! There is a story about Sirkazhi Govindarajan's reaction to that.
