While listening to many old songs, the advantages of prewritten lyrics for composers and singers became evident. I will start with two examples and we can add more as we discover them.

Perseverance and Kaumudi:
One can map subhapanthuvarali to "Todi" or rather "Mian ki Todi" in Hindusthani...Check out the Raga sancharam and know more about it here
http://www.itcsra.org/audio/knowurraga/todi/mian-ki-todi.ram
Hindusthani musicians improvised Todi thaat with some more intricate nuances to get another great melodic flavors and named some more ragas...

I listened to your version only this morning.
Excellent tune.
Sorry for taking so long to get to it, the website
had a quota limit, everytime I tried!!!
Create and record one tune everyday and you will see excellent results! Quantity and quality improve only when we start making it a habit to compose tunes. And try to create simple melodies, they are more memorable and impactful.
Best wishes,
rjay

One thing I found composing for pre written lyrics is that, I will have to sing the various lines to see if they fit properly to the sandham given in the verses. Most of the times, when we compose for free verses, the words will not sit in exactly the pattern our mind wants them to be in and this makes us elongate or shorten the singing of these verses.
Initially it would be like trying to deliberately fit an elephant in a square, but as you sing to youself more and more patiently, you would find it slowly being accomodated. What was initially an elephant (a mammoth effort :-) seems to blend in neatly later. This interesting process also gives rise to new meter which thus makes it appear as if you have created a new meter out of your imagination whereas what you have really done is try a fitting process.

Thanks rjay. It was only your encouragement, I have to say, that gave me the push. Now, everytime some little tune comes to my mind, I try to record it and keep it. And then I can elaborate on it into perhaps a full-length song.

I had the same feeling that you describe in your latest post. But I also realized the following: If you have already thought of a ragam for the song and you know what the general progression of swaras has to be for a particular line, it is probably easier to fit in the line to the tune by adding the suitable swaras at suitable points versus you fitting the previously-thought out tune to the line.

Interesting. Very sleepy effect it seems it has. I think you should complete the song.

Many posts ago, you presented your tune of Paadhi raavil. I went back to check that link again and it looks like the link is dead. Can you repost the link again of that instrumental piece. Do you have the complete version of it or is still the pallavi and the first bgm? Thanks

Kaumudi thanks for listening to the song ...appreciate it! As much as I love to complete the song, I couldnt quite understand the second charanam that much, not I did a good job in my singing in the first stanza, I noticed I am making blatant pronunciation errors or stretching of words like "Vendhu" etc...i didnt quite venture in to the second verse...Anyway thanks for putting up with that voice.....
