Have you heard Mere Naina Saawan Bhadon from Mehbooba , Hamen Tumse Pyar Kitna from Kudrat ?
Both SPB and Kishore were not trained in classical music. SPB, of course was brilliant in Shankarabharam. Kishore gave a glimpse of his ability in the above mentioned songs.

No I have not heard the songs of KK, which you have mentioned above, please provide me any links (URL) where I can listen to the songs u have mentioned, here in UK it is very difficult to good old songs,
Oh BTW, have you heard "sree thambura naratha", it is classical + devotional song by SPB, from a movie called "vijayapradhaban", *ring Roja & Telugu hero, it was dubbed in Tamil, in that song, SPB sings the swarams at higher notes without taking a breath for 2 minutes, simply superb, I do not think KK or even the late M.rafi can match SPB's calibre.

I think SPB was in his best in the late 70's and early 80's.
SPB is the singer who suits all heroes and of course other languages too.
Imagine a north indian singer singing in South.
But SPB has done his job even in Hindi movies
So ofcourse he is one among the best

aghuvaran(@212...), when you haven't heard Kishore Kumar's Hamein Tumse Pyar Kitna (from Kudrat) or Mere Naina Saawan Bhaadon
(Mehbooba), how on earth can you make a blanket statement that SPB is the greatest singer ever? True Kishore never really sang classical, but two
other songs that I can think off hand as having a classical touch are: Mujhe naulaka manga de re (from Sharaabi) and Salaam-e-Ishq (from
Muqaddar Ka Sikandar). You could probably get these songs at raaga.com or teenstation.com

vidyasanjay ;
little correction in your statment >>"SPB was in his best in the late 70's,80's,90's.
you said "Imagine a north indian singer singing in South", that's exactly what we (TFM) are suffering from now, thanks to ARR for bringing unusual nasal singers from the north, like HH, Udit, Shanker, Sukwinder,,,we really have to thank ARR for bringing these bathroom singers in TFM!!!!, there is no quality in these singers voice, no variation, no modulation, no life in their singing.

Raghu 212 is right when he says KK was poor at classical. Also I fail to see any classical touch in all those KK songs u have quoted.
However I also feel R212 is praising SPB a bit too much.

AVR;
If one states facts, it does not mean I am praising SPB a bit too much, who am I to praise SPB sir?, I am just an ordinary human being.
how on earth can one compare KK's voice with the supreme voice of SPB, SPB sir's voice is superb, ok I agree KK sir was a very versatile singer, but his voice is not good, M.rafi sir's voice was a lot better than KK, but SPB's voice is better than both of them!!!
SPB is not just a singer, but an actor who acts with his voice, he makes every single songs sound special, even if the tune is crap, you can still listen to the song, because of SPB.
just listen to him speaking, laughing, crying between palavi's or charanam of the songs, who can do these expression better than SPB sir?, no one!!!
Gangai Amaran & MSV once said "that if SPB laughs in a song, the song is sure to be instant super hit".

Try & listen to "Engiruntho vandhaan" from the film(also) engiruntho vandhan, superb semi-classcical by SPB, here are few semi-classical by SPB;
1) "Mettu podhu mettu podhu" from Duet
2) "Engiruntho vandhaan" from Engiruntho vandhaan
3) "sree thambura naratha" from vijayapradhban
4) "kootathele koyil pura", idhayak Koyil
5) "vanthazh mahalakshime ", uyarntha ullam
6) "sangeetha jathimulai", from Kadhal oviyam
7) "Aval oru menaghai", from natchathiram
Only god knows as to how many more Tamil,Telugu,Hindi,Malyalam classical SPB sir sang!!!

Honestly Raghuvaran,
If I want to listen to hardcore classical, I would listen to Balamurali Krishna and the likes of him. SPB, Kishore, Rafi, Mukesh all are to be compared as playback singers for films. Just a point about singing more classical songs does not make SPB the greatest. Have you heard the classical songs of the great Manna dey or M. Rafi? Please search for the songs by these great maestros on the net.
The point I am making is that SPB is great, that does not make others less great. You cannot compare one singer with another. You just have to enjoy the best each has given us.

I agree SPB is the greatest singer that Mother India had ever produced, but Mother India also produced other greats like M.rafi, KK, KJY, BMK,TMS,PBS,SJ,PS,Lata,Asha..etc.
Vinayak;
I have heards classicals of Manny dey, he is not GREAT, even the nasal singer Hraiharan is better than him, r u out of your mind?

Folks
I was listening to TFM from raaga while doing my work today .I first listened to "Unakkenna " from Simla Special. SPB was brilliant. Then I moved over to "Ilamai Idho Idho" in Sagalakalavallavan. Arguably one of the BEST dance songs I have ever heard.Amazing music by Raaja, and tremendous singing by SPB.His versatility shines right through in this classic. And then to top them I listened to Sigaram.A masterpiece by SPB with his own music. And the clincher was how he got Balamurali Krishna and Yesudas to produce two brilliant songs in the movie.OF course, Vanna Konda Vennilave..was the best.
I am truly in awe of this person called SPB. He sings..like no one else..period.Composes music really well and to top it all acts really well in very sensitive roles as in Keladi Kanmani or Sigaram or in funny roles like Minsara Kanavu or Kadhalan.
Any award however big will not express the credit due to this truly great gift to Indian Film Industry..SP Balasubramaniam !
Kudos to you Sir...

Honestly Vinayak;
If I want to listen to hardcore Carnatic, I will also listen to Dr.BalamuraliKrishna, Dr. KJY, DR. Seerkazhi Govinderajan, Pithu kodi Murugadas, Nithya Shree, ...etc.
but we are talking here about playback singing for the film industry, not kacheris. SPB is the don amongst Playback singers in India, that's all. learning a skill & using that skill is NOT A BIG DEAL, like learning carnatic & doind kacheris is NOT a BIG DEAL,eg (DR.BMK,DR.KJY,DR.Seerkazhi, ...etc), but without learning a skill (carnatic music) and singing carntic songs (Shankerbaranam, sagara sangamam,engiruntho vanthaan, kadhal oviyam, ghazzal,..) is A BID DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!, that's where SPB stands taller & fatter than the rest of the artists!

Raghuvaran (@ 212.2.14.241) :
Its not Pithu kodi Murugadas,its pithukoli Murugadas.
Even if you say or don't say everybody knows SPB is FAT(just kidding).Anyway I'm really amazed at the conclusions you draw..."learning a skill & using that skill is NOT A BIG DEAL, like learning carnatic & doind kacheris is NOT a BIG DEAL".
To tell you something, singing something that the MD asks you to sing is NOT A BIG DEAL.Singing something like carnatic music and doing improvisations in that is really a big deal.Cinema music is like a sitrinbam, where as carnatic music is like a perinbam.So open up and accept the fact that SPB is a good singer who can adjust himself to sing some classical based cinema songs.It stops only there and you are really ignorant when you say which is a big deal and not a big deal.
hope this helps!

Raghuvaran@(212..), SPB sings "carntic" songs like "ghazzal"? What new kind of "carntic" is this?
Let me know where you live. I know this fantastic website where you can search for lunatic asylums. I could suggest one for you.
