Saravanan,
I saw Era.Murukan making a note of 'Madras Youth Choir' above. Are there any recordings of this choir (or his various other choirs) available ? I still can remember some of them, though I must have heard them twenty years before.

I remember a lot of patriotic songs by MBS Choir group and broadcast by Chennai Vanoli Nilayam & others during those days of Emergency 1976-77. Another famous and my favourite is "Paada Saalai Poga Vendum Paapa Ezhundiru" Excellent song in Minor. Mr Saravanan can you get that for SOTD ?

"Ooru sanam" tune , IMO is another run of the mill kind sounding similar to "Ranga rangaiyya " from Varumaiyin niram sivappu. "Thedum kan parvai" is the best song from MTK with excellent vocal support from SPB and SJ

Ooru Sanam is a great great song, in terms of Music quality and instrunments usage .. the bass guitar has been used beautifully by Ilayaraja in this song ... the situation was a run-of-mill one, and the lyrics could definitely have been better, but what makes this song good is the haunting Music by the great IR, and soulful singing by SJanaki.

Saravanan:
Do you have songs of MBS composed for the `20 point program during Indira Gandhi's reign' telecast in DD Madras? These songs were sung by the Madras/AIR choir, some of them were very good. I remember one with words ` muhurtham aha .. um'

Was "Mandhiraththale Maangai Vizhumaam" composed/arranged by MBS? If so, does anybody have a downloadable version? Please?

I still remember seeing Rajkumar Bharathi and Sudha (Raghunathan) were part of MBS team on various chorus songs featured on Chennai DD in the mid 70'S.
One song 'Paadasaalai pogha vendum Paappaa Ezhundhiru' was a nice one. Similarly the Bharathi songs 'Odi VilAiyaadu Paapaa', 'Nalla Kaalam Varughudhu' and 'Dhikkugal ettum sidhari'
were also nice.
Mr Saravanan - I saw the movie 'Nijangal' at Sathyam Theatre noon show in Dec 1982 - fully dominated by Cho who is coming as a local politician.

Great to see to many people sharing memories of MBS and his choir songs! I too was part of a group of kids who sang 'Jaya perigai kottada' for a school function ( 4th std, 1979 ) :))
I am sorry I don't have recordings of the choir songs. But I have written today to R.S.Rajesh, who is an active member of the Trivandrum Chapter of the Youth Choir. I am sure he will be able to send some songs.

When I was in PSBB kknagar (between 1977-1983), our music teacher was a regular in MBS choir. She used to teach the songs they played in the madras choir. One song I remember is 'Yenna yen edharku enge eppadi yendtu chinna penne kelu chiranda kelvigal kelu...

In 1983, on November 14 (Children's day), there was a big programme at Delhi. School children from all over the country participated in that big programme. One of the songs which all children sang was 'Odi vilaiyaadu Paappaa' (chorus song), in the same tune of MBS. The entire programme was shown on the same day in the National Network of Doordarshan.
I remember the tune even today. I taught my son, six years ago, when I was in Ghana. My son participated in a music competition and sang 'Odi Vilaiyadu Paapaa' (MBS tune) and came second in the competition. Incidentally, this was the only Tamil song which featured in the competition. All other children (most of them are from Tamil family) chose Hindi songs.

'Oosru sanam' is a song that was immensely popular in its time. In an interview, when asked for her favorites among songs of other singers, Chitra mentioned this song first.
In the episode of Sapthaswarangal in which SJ was the judge, A.V. Ramanan said that they had to actually ban 'Ooru sanam' from the programme, as they found that many participants were repeatedly singing this song!

Song of the Day: nenju porukkuthillaiyE from parasakthi.

- A Bharathiyar song sung by Chidambaram Jayaraman in the first film of Sivaji Ganesan, for the weekend. Music composed by Sudarsanam. The song is tailor-made for CSJ who makes it one of the best sad songs ever.
- I am not sure what specific incident (if any) made Bharathiyar write this song. The poem is titled 'Bharatha janangaLin thaRkaala nilamai', where he laments about the sorry state of affairs. I think the poem also has an element of anger, that is not brought out by the song.
- Sathya lists the songs in Parasakthi:
konju mozhi sollum kiLiyE sezhum kOmaLa thaamaraiyE - T.S.Bagavathi

I have a collection of Barathi songs and I have heard this song often, for its beauty, but I never knew it was sung for Sivaji Ganeshan, that too when he looked so young in his first movie (no wigs, of course:)). I think that there is a certain amount of anger reflected in the 'sangadhis' of this song, which the lyric is about. Maybe, we are used to think that anger in a song is reflected by a fast tempo and blaring trumpets and things like that.
