I am not sure if this thread has been attempted
before: If so , Ravi..Knock this off!
Many pioneers in TFM have innovated in a variety
of ways to make TFM absolutely Great.
The Keyword here is UNIQUENESS!
I would love to identify songs that are truly unique.
Uniqueness could be in
--Construct of Music (Style,Instruments etc)
--Singing
--Lyrics
As my knowledge of MDs other than IR is very limited , I request Kanchana,SK,Gopal,RajaRam,
Ramki & others to pitch in for TFM prior to IR.
My Examples for Unique Songs:
1. maNNil Indha Kaadhal - Keladi kaNmanNi
-- For SPB's Singing
2. KalaivaaNiye - Sindhu Bhairavi
-- For the musical construct
Now.. Over to you folks..

More:
Va Vadhyare Oottande - Bommalattam - The first song in Madras slang!
Muthuk Kulikka Vaareyala - Anubhavi Raja Anubhavi - The first song in Tirunelveli dialect
Adutthatthu Ambujatthaip Paatthelaa - Edhir Neechal - The first "brahmin dialect" song
Petta Rap - Kadhalan - The first rap in TFM
Ninaitthale Inikkum - Just humming and two words
And I will sing a tune or something like that by Bhanumathi in Ippadium Oru Penn or something like that - The first English song in TFM ? There is definitely a song in English in Idhayak Kani by Usha Uthup.
Oru Raja Raniyidam - Sivandha Mann - The first song to be picturised abroad, I think.

I think "Manappara Madu Katti" in MP Magarasi is an earlier Tirunelveli dialect song.

What is the earliest qawali song ? The only one I can recall is "Paradi Kanne Konjam" in Vallavanukku Vallavan.

RV: We are not listing firsts here. Please read some of the earlier postings. :). Yours is not the first to be admonished. :)
There is a hindi song in Jaadhi malli - 'samundar baar baar aathA hai'. I think there might be more.
What about 'nivEdhA' in nee paathi naan paathi - just one word and the rest of the song is just swaras.

Continuing the fun.... :-))
How about this song that doesn't have a single word in Tamil, by Deva?
Hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray from Aha!

hi,
mahendran/IR's "nandu" has a hindi song by PBS, i think. isnt "paruvame" from nenjathai killathe unique in that it has the same beat (running feet) running right thru the pallavis & saranams of the song without a single variation. would u add these ones to the list?
1"punnagai mannan's 1st computer-created song in tamil (south?)
2 priya for 1st 6-track recording or something
3 "kodiyile malligaipoo" from kadalora kavithaigal
- the pallavi is not repeated after the 1st stanza; it comes at the end the song...

There is a song in maaya bazaar 1996 in which IR has used completely human voices (chorus) for interludes without any instrumentals. The song is :naan poRanthu vanthathu raaja vamsaththula..

There is a song from 'Ninaithaalle Inikkum' which uses only the swaras and no words, sung by Janaki and SPB which goes like this, 'ThaAna Thana thananna.....'

Murali :
Actually there are words in the song you mentioned : 'ninaithalE inikkum' and finally at the end 'an affair to remember'.
ARR's song 'rAsAthi en usiru' from thirudA thirudA does have instruments : it uses bass/rhythm guitar. But this is a wonderful song from ARR; superb lyrics by VM (for a change). Especially considering ARR's over-reliance on rhythms.

After the discussion here re rAsAththi en usiru from thirudA thirudA, I went back and listened to it again and was wondering about the instrument(s) used. Thanks for the info. Agree with you it's a fabulous song from Rahman with good lyrics from Vairamuththu. (the entire album is great.)

Can I include 'Athisayam' song from JEANS which is supposed to show all the seven wonders in a film song, first time? (never been thought of in any movies in the world)

KandEn engum poo magaL nattiyam - from Kattrinilae varm geeDham - IR superimposed SJ's voice. The same song was sung by VJ also (a shorter version). IR repeated this technique in En Kanmani (Chittukuruvi) and in KanmaNiyae (6- 60 varai) later.
The Pagalil or Nilavu SJ song (with no music) starts with Thom tha theem tha...

isn't the first Tamil Rap song from the movie "Vikram" -> the song vikram vikram ?
Another unique song might be from the movie Nammavar there were no instruments used, all the sounds were created via clapping and whistling.....

I think we should reconsider the decision to split threads. It looks like no one is reading the old responses, but just posting whatever they want to, whether it has been already mentioned or not. :-).
OTOH people do not seem to be reading ANY of the previous posts. This page itself has many repetitions.

Ravi: Oops! my mistake. Sorry about that.
Bhaskar: Konjam velai adhigam. Appuram veettil ulla computer-il konjam problems. ( I updated to the latest Internet explorer ver 4.01 and after that surfing has become rather troublesome. I guess I should hv thought about the Microsoft reputation before I updated the software. ;-) )
Filtering my inputs again with the "Unique" operator instead of the "first" operator, I get
1. Petta Rap
2. Kaise Kahoon ( What is this Hindi song in Jadhi Malli ? I never heard of it, forget hearing it. )
3. Ninaitthale Inikkum ( For the very limited number of words. ) - Probably "Nivedha" is a better fit in this category.
4. I would still like to propose "Va Vadhyare Oottande" - ( I hv a strong bias towards this song. ;-) ) It is certainly a pioneering song even though there hv been several songs in the Madrasi Tamil
5. Maman Voodu Macchi Voodu - Ellam Inba Mayam - Probably the only song set in a Carnatic ambience with Madrasi Tamil. I believe there is one more in En Uyir Thozhan, though. I hv never heard that.
6. I cant think of any qawali type song other thank "Paradi Kanne Konjam" in Vallavanukku Vallavan. Probably there are a few. But until I get refuted on this...
7. En Kanmani Un Kadhali - Counterpoint.

Rajaraman:
No idea about ragas.. If U can give me some clue (eg. a list of films u think close enough..) of that Malayalam song I can try to rake my brains (obviously whatever left of it:)))))
Gokul:
Is that we have to give only the first of the genres listed or any song which comes into an unique genre can be listed????
Can poomalaiye..thol serava.. from Pagalnilavu be taken as an example of counterpoint??
The picturisation of Mathadu mathadu mallige.. from Arunachalam is that of a qawwali (or anthakshari????) type song.. Will this song make the category of qawwali.. Another song which comes into mind with regards to qawwali is Kannalane.. from Bombay..
BS
